THE ANSWER TO FEBRUARY’S NAME THAT PLANE
The name of the plane is the Saab JA37 Viggen. Larry Bochenko was the only one to answer it correctlyand will receive a free raffle ticket at this month’s meeting. In the 1960’s, this country’s military sought a newaircraft with short runway performance. Other requirements included supersonic ability at low level, mach 2performance at high altitude, and the ability to make short landings at low angles of attack. With the developmentof the turbo fan engines, this aircraft was the first to utilize two unique options that at the time other aircraft wereusing only one or the other of the two options, allowing it to be a good STOL aircraft. This aircraft made itsmaiden flight in early 1967. See picture below.
MARCH’S NAME THAT PLANE In the mid 1920’s, this was the first US Navy carrier-based fighter plane specifically designed for this purpose.Send all responses to Bradford Walters at [email protected].
On the Road with Pete WarenskiPete Warenski, our ambassador, had an opportunity to visit and fly with Ron Petterec in Arizona recently. Here isa quote from him. “Almost heaven. 82 degrees, 5mph wind and clear skies. Had 6 great flights. Ron let me flyhis Hobbico 60 plus his electric. We watched a fellow lose sight of his jet(Navy Jet) ...and baam!!! it went downabout 1/2 mile away in the desert in a puff of black smoke! . Ron's club field is an 800+ asphalt runway. You cansee the pit area complete with tables. They can fly 5 at a time in the air. Hard to co me back!!!”
