Equivocate: 1) use of a word in more than one sense

2) to hide the truth by being ambiguous

Duplicity: 1) acting in two very different ways with different people

2) Being deceitful; twofold; double

As the witches create the spell they literally tell the audience that all of their messages are not entirely true. The Witches say, “Double, double toil and trouble, Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.” The use of the word double hints to the audience their words have double meanings. Macbeth does not realize the meaning behind their fortunes.

Example from the Text Is this Equivocation or Duplicity? Explain

“Macbeth! Macbeth!
