Founded in 1907, the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) is committed to helping homeless and abused companion animals, enlightening people and enriching lives. The Society’s Animal Protection Department enforces Alberta’s Animal Protection Act by responding to concerns within the City of Edmonton about animal neglect. The EHS also actively educates the public and provides tool to help them be responsible pet owners while at the same time, cares for approximately 13,000 homeless animals who come through its shelter doors each year. The Society greatly

charitable organization is not a local chapter to any organization and does not receive any regular government funding.

Animal ID: 84778Name: TonyAge: 2 yearsSex: MaleSpecies: CatBreed: Domestic Short HairColor: Orange Tabby

Tony Included in the adoption fee:- Spay/Neuter surgery (done before being placed up for adoption)- Microchipping- First set of vaccines- Complimentary post-adoption vet exam- And so much more!

Hi, my name is Tony, and I am one sweet tempered red head! I like to invite myself up to the security of a friend-ly lap, lavishing gentle head butts and neck nuzzles upon the host. I’ll show my appreciation with a big crackle purr that’s warm and happy. Despite my easy attitude, the hustle and bustle of shelter life has this kid wide eyed and full of wonder. My curiosity constantly gets the better of me, and I’ll leave my kennel to investigate the goings on. But, I am not a fan of loud noises or quick movements, and often retire to the safety of my den. I am a rather timid little tiger, and I’d benet from a calm home environment, where I can grow my condence and mature into a self-assured kitty. Come meet me today!

June 19 - July 2, 2015

Dear Working Wise:During a recent job interview I was asked if I was planning on having kids. I said no, but the question made me feel uncomfortable. Are employers allowed to ask such personal questions? Signed Concerned

Dear Working Wise:

Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise

Dear Concerned:

No, employers are not allowed to ask you about your plans for a family. Private information like that is protected under the Alberta Human Rights Act for businesses under provincial jurisdiction.

For more information on the Alberta Human Rights Act, visit www.albertahumanrights.ab.ca or call the Northern Regional Oce (780-427-7661) or the Southern Regional Oce (403-297-6571).

Some interviewers might be unaware and may unknowingly ask inappropriate questions. You should be prepared for this so you are not caught o guard in an interview. Generally, any information that could be used to discriminate against you cannot be asked. Employers should only be asking you for information that is relevant to your ability to do the job.

Employers cannot ask about: • gender, marital status, family status, next of kin, marriage plans or child-care arrangements;• source of income, unless it concerns your former employment;• maiden name or name origin;• age or date of birth, but they can ask if you meet the minimum age requirement for the job;• previous address, unless it meets a business purpose acceptable under the Act;• birthplace or ancestry;• height or weight • sexual orientation;• membership in organizations unrelated to your work;• hobbies or interests that relate to race, religious beliefs, etc.• current or past health problems, Workers’ Compensation Board claims, or any absence due to stress or mental illness; • citizenship or languages not required for the job; • religious beliefs, customs and holidays that you observe; or• military service outside Canada, unless there is an acceptable business-related purpose.

Employers cannot request a photo, which could reveal factors such as race and gender, except in certain circumstances such as a modeling or entertainment position, where this may be acceptable. If an employer requires a photograph for business-related purposes, they can ask for it after an oer of employment has been made.

Employers can ask:• if you can fulll work-related requirements, such as working night shifts or lifting heavy items;• for any previous names you have had if the information is needed to complete reference checks or verify your past employment or education; and• if you are legally permitted to work in Alberta.

Three ways to handle inappropriate questions:1. Write "not applicable" on the application form or politely let the employer know that the question is inappropriate; 2. Answer the question and then discuss the underlying concern that has prompted the question. “Do you plan to have kids?” might be the interviewer’s way of asking if you will be able to work late when needed; 3. Answer only the underlying concern.

However you choose to answer, be professional, diplomatic and honest. After you are oered the job and accept it, the employer can ask you for information required for benet coverage and for employment records.

Do you have a work-related question?Send your questions to Working Wise, at [email protected]. Charles Strachey is a manager with Alberta Human Services. This column is provided for general information.
