The Oilsands Automation Conference March 8 & 9 featured some special topics. Keynote speaker and industry icon, Steve Rubin gave us some insights into the beginnings of PC based process control systems with the beginnings of Intellution. He also made a case for including video to augment the operator’s view of the process – video based on process control events and an HMI Console recorder to troubleshoot operational problems. Our dinner keynote speaker, Don Thompson, President of the Oilsands Developers Group, provided “just the facts” about the oilsands, the oilsands potential - given world events and its environmental record. Other topics included Wayne Brown, CTO/ETX Systems with a new oilsands process, Robert Cooke/Patterson & Cooke Slurry Transport in the Mining and Oilsands industry and Brian Schleckser, Syncrude VPTechnical to discuss the value of Operations Focused Automation. Congratulations to Dan McGraw and his organizational committee for a successful conference.
Next, on March 28, a discussion on the new P.Tech program by ASET which should be of interest to many members interested in upgrading their professional status.
It’s that time of year when we are looking for new volunteers to help the Edmonton section succeed. If you are interested, we would welcome your time. We have a large board – many hands make the work very light.

tals of electrical operation through the use of a M2CP modular control package. Each student will learn how to identify and trouble-
shoot the electrical as well as mechanical components. Students will learn how to differentiate actuator control problems from valve
problems and they will learn the basic skills required to provide on-site operation, maintenance and servicing for Series 2000 model
actuators

Course S-EIM-2: EIM EIM TEC2000 Training
This 1-day course provides an overall working knowledge of the EIM Series TEC2000 (Total Electronic Control) electric actuator. This
program provides the fundamentals of electrical operation, construction, assembly, hardware, software and hands-on configuration
through the use of a RDM (Remote Display Module). Each student will learn how to identify and troubleshoot the electronic as well as
mechanical components. Students will learn how to interconnect various control configurations for the TEC2000 units and they will
learn the basic skills required to provide on-site operation, maintenance and servicing for Series TEC2000 actuators.
Date: March 9, 2011 Price: $ 400.00
Course 7009: DeltaV Implementation 1
This 4.5 day course covers a complete DeltaV system implementation.
Date: March 14-18, 2011 Price: $ 3,770.00
Course S100: Valve Sizing & Selection
This 1-day course uses lectures and examples to explain the correct procedure for sizing and selecting control valves using Fisher Specifica-
tion Manager software

Course S900: Fundamentals of Control
This ½-day course is an introduction for anyone in the process industry interested in the fundamentals of process instrumentation.
Date: March 15, 2011 Free
Course 2035/2075: PeakVue Mystery and Autocorrelation
This 3-day course provides insight into advanced functionality of Emerson’s patented PeakVue™ technology and Autocorrelation. Machine
vibrations generate both macro and microscopic vibrations, and microscopic vibrations generate stress waves that have frequency
ranges determined by the mass of the impacting object. The properties of these stress waves will be explained. The Autocorrelation
section of the course will teach the power of the autocorrelation coefficient function for the analysis of vibration induced time wave
form data. The autocorrelation function data generally are computed from the same time wave form data used to compute the spectrum.
The strengths of the autocorrelation data are complimentary to the strengths of the spectral data. This course makes use of both case
studies from real-life examples of common faults and live demonstrations illustrating specific mounting procedures to reliably detect
certain faults. The difference between PeakVue techniques and demodulation will also be demonstrated.
Date: March 21-23, 2011 Price: $ 2,400.00

An Introduction to Safety Instrumented Systems
There are many different ways to design a safety instrumented system (SIS).
Questions like these are being asked by users and engineering firms alike:
Which technology should be used (electric, electronic, or programmable)?,
What level of redundancy is appropriate (single, dual, or triple)?
How often should systems be tested (monthly, quarterly, yearly, or once per shutdown)?
What about field devices (technology, level of redundancy, and test intervals)?
Debate continues as to how one even makes these choices (past experience, qualitative judgment, quantitative analysis, etc.). This seminar will cover the basics of what needs to be done in the design and selection of safety systems.
You Will Be Able To:
Recognize the design basis of recent standards, guidelines, and recommended practices
Describe the difference between process control and safety control
Describe the lifecycle set of activities that are necessary to design, implement, and maintain safety systems
Discuss the basics of evaluating process risk levels
Discuss the basics of determining Safety Integrity Levels (SILs)
Describe the failure modes of safety systems
Recognize the real impact of redundancy
Describe the pros and cons of various logic system technologies
Includes ISA Standards: ANSI/ISA-84.00.01-
2004, Parts 1–3 (A $704 Value)
Main Topics Covered:
Introduction
Guidelines and Standards
General SIS Design Considerations
Hazard and Risk Assessment
Failure Modes
System Technologies
Operation and Maintenance

Seminar Outline
Morning Session:
Using Alarms and Events to Better Operate & Maintain Your Facility
Based on the Monitoring & Assessment section of the ISA SP18.2 Alarm Management standard, this
session looks not at how to analyze your alarm system in general, but rather how to use some simple
analysis based on different job functions at your plant. Operators will learn how to use alarm data to
perform better shift handovers, spot developing process and equipment problems, and ensure developing
problems on previous shifts are known. Engineering will learn how to use alarms and events to spot
bottlenecks in the process, equipment constraints, and control strategies that are no performing as
intended. Maintenance & Technicians will learn how to use alarms and events to spot and diagnose
equipment, instrumentation, and reliability problems. This session is interactive and uses real data so that
the students can see firsthand what to look for and the optimal formatting of this information.
Afternoon Session:
Alarm Rationalization & Changing the Board Operators Interaction with Alarms
Based on the Rationalization section of the ISA SP18.2 Alarm Management Standard, this session looks at
not only the proper approach to rationalize alarms but also the impact it has on the board operator and
change in behavior required to keep your process in its desired operating envelop and the intervention
required when your process starts to go beyond design limits. This session uses real data to practically
apply the theories taught in this course.
Course Instructor
Instructor: Kevin Brown
Kevin has over 25 years in the industry with over 20 years in process control and distributed control systems (DCS) including systems by Bailey, Taylor, ABB, Metso, and Honeywell. During this time Kevin developed control and safety systems to optimize and improve plant reliability.
Kevin’s last 5 years have been with Matrikon in varying roles; these range from simple installations through complex projects including multiple connections to different plant control systems.
Kevin has facilitated several rationalizations and has been actively consulted to write alarm philosophies. Kevin has been involved in the review of various processing facility alarm management systems, comparing and ensuring they meet current process industry standards.
Kevin Brown is currently employed by Matrikon, where he is the manager of the North American Alarm Management Team.
