Edney Edition Term 1 Week 5 1 March 2018
The Edney Way - Respect and Excellence
Independence and Responsibility
In my travels around the school I have a quiet smile at
times to see care-free children at the end of the day
with Mum or Dad in tow, obviously well trained in
carrying your child’s school bag. I admire your kindness
and it really is wonderful to see, however I assure you
that we wouldn’t have tired your child so much that
they cannot do this for themselves.
A theme at all levels in our school is personal
responsibility, autonomy and a sense of achievement.
We sum this up as Respect and Excellence. When we do
something for someone that they could otherwise do
themselves it says:
I don’t trust you to do that yourself;
I can do it better than you can; and
I’m willing to take on more and more
responsibility for you.
Of course, there are times when it is just the nice thing
to do to help someone out, and that’s what it should be
– helping them out. The old saying that if you give
someone a fish, they’re fed for one day, but if you
teach someone how to fish, they will never go hungry
(as long as the fish are biting) is quite apt.
The easiest way to teach responsibility is to give
responsibility. Your child should be playing a key part in
getting themselves organised for the day, carrying and
being responsible for their own things, and becoming
increasingly independent. Our role is to help them, to
trust them, and to support them as each day they enjoy
a sense of achievement that comes from being given the
opportunity to try.
On-time Arrival and Signing Students Out
While we enjoy a healthy attendance rate, we could
always improve upon this with on-time arrival at school
From the Principal’s Desk
in the morning. This gives your child the opportunity to
get organised for the day ahead and join in the
learning from the first moment. We suggest that
children are at school by 8.30am for an 8.40am start
time. Where children arrive to school after the 8.40am
siren, they are considered to be late and must then
come through the front office to be signed in and
receive a late pass. This requirement extends to all
children enrolled at the school, including Kindergarten
and Pre-primary.
Children from time to time may need to leave school
before our official end time. This happens when there
is an appointment, emergency or some change to your
regular plans. In any case, children being picked up
throughout the school day must be signed out through
the front office. Children will never be released
directly from classrooms ahead of school dismissal
time without a leave pass. Again, this requirement
includes our Kindergarten and Pre-primary classes.
