Hand Tool SafetyWebQuest
As a technology Education teacher tool safety is important for students to learn in all our classes.
Hand tools are a major part of the curriculum in technology education classes. Therefore using this WebQuest students will learn hand tool safety
Students will learn all safety rules regarding the assigned hand tools
Introduction
Students are to team up in pairs of two.Groups will then pick a hand tool from the
instructors listThe group will find out all information on how
to use the hand tool and how to use it safely and correctly.
The group will then present their findings to the class.
Task
1. Find a partner2. you and your partner pick a tool3. research the tool find out how it works and
how to use it safely.4. Develop a list of safety rules for the tool5. make a PowerPoint and present your
findings to the class

Example
The block Plane
UsesA block plane is used to surface a small piece
of wood in order to give it a smooth and finished look.
The plane removes small shavings of wood to make a flat surface on the wood.
How to use a block planeFirst make sure you have a sharp plane iron.
If not sharpen it or get a sharp one.Set the plane iron so that a 1/32 to 1/16 of an
inch of the plane iron is sticking out of the sole.
Using two hands hold the plane and using firm even pressure push it smoothly along the surface you want to plane making sure to hold it flat.
Safety rules1 never fool around with a tool2 mind the blade3 remove jagged pieces of wood before
planning and watch for splinters.4. ware safety glasses.

Evaluation
Now that you have presented your findings to the class and that you have all learned the safety rules regarding the hand tools that were presented in class you are free to use these tools in the laboratory.
If you are unsure of any safety rules or how to use a tool, ask the instructor. It is better to be safe then sorry.
