Article one: Sunscreen

So you think you are too pale and want to get a good suntan this summer? Why not? Except that unless you are careful the sun can make your skin old and leathery and can even give you skin cancer. If you must sunbathes (and let’s face it, lots of us think it’s a good idea), then have a look at these gorgeous guys and babes I found on the beach and see which of them is like you.

Roger: I’m the type who always burns. It’s because I’m fair-skinned – and I’ve got red hair and freckles. That’s why I’m so good-looking! But I still burn unless I use a really high SPF (sun protection factor) – and 20 in strong sun.

Mike: Yeah I tan easily. People like me who are dark-skinned (with dark hair and brown eyes) are not really cool but we go even browner in the sun. I still use sunscreen though, something light with an SPF of about 6…

Melinda: I have to be careful because I’m the type who burns easily. But I do tan in the end. If you have got fair hair and blue eyes like me you’d better use quite a strong sunscreen (an SPF of 15 to start with)…

Alice: Me, I have got built-in protection! I don’t burn, but I don’t’ sunbathe anyway. I mean what for? I like messing around on the beach though.

Article two: Why Sky is Far Away

Long ago the sky was close to the Earth. Men and women did not have to plant their own food. Instead, when they were hungry, they just reached up and broke off a piece of the sky to eat. Many people in the kingdom did not use the gift of the sky wisely. When they took more than they could eat, the sky became angry. Some people threw the extra pieces into the garbage. Early one morning the angry sky turned dark. Black clouds hung over the land, and a great sky voice said to all the people, "You are wasting my gift of food. Do not take more than you can eat. I don’t want to see pieces of me in the garbage anymore or I will take my gift away." One man named Adami wasn’t careful. At festival time, he took so many delicious pieces of sky that he couldn’t eat them all. Adami decided to try to hide the pieces at the bottom of the garbage pile. Suddenly, the sky became angry and the clouds turned black. "You have wasted my gift of food again," yelled the sky. "This time I will go away so you cannot waste me anymore." All of the people cried, "What will we eat? We might starve!" The sky said, "You will have to learn how to plant crops in the ground and hunt in the forests. If you work hard, you may learn not to waste the gifts of nature."

• Second question: According to the folktale, why does the sky become angry with the villagers?

• Third question: According to the folktale, what happens when Adami cannot finish all of the food he has taken?

Third Article: Ready for Anything

Justin was always prepared. His bedroom was so full of flat bicycle tires, bent tennis rackets, deflated basketballs, and games with missing pieces that you could barely get in the door. His parents pleaded with him to clean out his room. "What use is a fish tank with a hole in the bottom?" his father asked. Justin's motto is: "Never throw anything out, you never know when it might come in handy." When Justin was away from home, he always carried his blue backpack. He liked to think of it as a smaller version of his bedroom—a place to store the many objects that he collected. It was full of the kind of things that seemed unimportant, but when used with a little imagination, might come in handy. Justin had earned a reputation for figuring things out and getting people out of otherwise hopeless situations. Many of his classmates and neighbors sought him out when they needed help with a problem.
