Principle Joe Lewis Clark came into thespotlight in the late 1980s for his unbelievablemethods of managements at Eastside High

School, an inner-city institution in Paterson,New Jersey.

Born May 7, 1939 in Newark, New Jersey andmarried to Hazel Clark.

He worked as a grade teacher in Paterson, New

Jersey and was director of campus andplaygrounds in Essex County, New Jersey in1962.

Soon Mr. Clark was given the job of beingprinciple of Eastside High in 1982 to 1989.

Principle Clark walked the halls of EastsideHigh with his well-known baseball bat the hetoted with pride.

His main focus was expelling what heconsidered to be called parasites which werethe most unruly, disruptive hoodlumstudents.

Several parents and outsiders disagreed withClarks methods however; he had thousands ofsupporters to back him up.

Clark was appointed principal of Eastside HighSchool in while being a twenty-year veteran.

Clark had previously been principal at thetroubled inner-city grammar school and hefantastically transformed the school into whatpeople called the Miracle on Carroll Street.

Despite the dangerous reputation that the schoolearned, Clark moved quickly to devise a new orderfor Eastside High.

He reorganized the administrative structure at theschool, replaced official and chained all of thedoors throughout the school so that students couldnot leave during school hours to get out oflearning and bringing outside drugs into the

school. Clark saw that students suffered from ignorance as

administration stood by and tolerated the pooracademic performance and disruptive behavior.

Lewiss outstandingmethods of controllingthe student body wonhim more support from

hundreds of studentsand many teachers.

The public praised himfor representing the

tough leadership thatwas necessary tomanage, protect andteach inner-city

children.

There were still a fewcritics, families andeven students whoquestioned the actual

benefits of Joes law-and-order approach toeducating students.

Lewis Clark had ahard time restoringthe high school withdisobedient teenagers,

angry teachers andpissed off parents buthe never stoppedfighting to improve

what he nowconsidered his family.

Clark is remembered as a realist and avisionary. Due to the achievements Clarkhas made has received national attention

from Time Magazine, a 60 minute profile,a book titled Laying Down the Law, andthe successful movie Lean on Me.
