The power of storytelling...
Story telling is an ancient oral tradition and one of our
oldest forms of education.
Most of us remember our teachers reading to us in elementaryschools and we have written adventurous stories in classrooms of ourown.
VoiceThread can be used for digital storytelling, allowing students theopportunity to produce stories and exhibit:
subject skills
reflection skills
language skills
higher level thinking skills
social skills
and artistic skills

How VoiceThread appliesto the classroom
Language Arts- A VoiceThread could be used to facilitate a pre-writing exercise
Science- VoiceThread could be used to review the life cycle of a butterfly or any other
organism studied
Mathematics- Teachers could upload a series of documents or images each with its ownmath problem for the students to solve using the doodle tool and audio component
Social Studies- When learning about new cultures, students and teachers could conduct aVoiceThread to visually represent the customs, clothing, housing, people, and religions of thatculture
Music- This is a link to how I experimented with VoiceThread within a few of my classes(please excuse the background noise. I do not get a lot of private non-student time in myroom!). I used 4 different examples of usage and you can navigate through them using thearrow in the lower right-hand corner.

Passive learners can become more actively involved through anongoing interaction with the instructional content as well as with theirpeers
Content can be adapted to eliminate all unnecessary screeninformation
Lessons can be adapted for response mode (writing or recording)
Activities can be independent in nature reducing social problems thatmay impede the learning environment in large or small groups
Innovative technology promotes student engagement, motivation, ultimatelyenhances the quality of the learning experience for students with disabilities

screened for accuracy, helping to reduce student frustration orembarrassment

VoiceThread is a Flash-based application and not compatible withscreen-reader programs and utilities
The use of webcam and audio comments are not easily captioned ortranscribed
VoiceThread is currently working on developing an accessible
interface; however, no clear timeframe is available(The Sloan Consortium, 2013)
