Objectives:

Exponential times - shift State of information – pace of change

Connection – Edge Power Why is connection important

Edgility – concept Personal Learning Environment (PLE) Smart mobs – new organization

Information (digital)…

Facebook – over 200 million visitors a month Myspace – over 120 million visitors a monthYoutube – 100 million visitors a monthEvery minute – ten hours of video is posted Last quarter -Fastest grown demographic on

Facebook 35 – 45 year of age

What is it all about?

Knowledge is growing exponentially. In many fields the life of knowledge is now

measured in months and years. The “half-life of knowledge” is the time span

from when knowledge is gained to when it becomes obsolete.

Our old ways of learning are too slow!New ways of organizing are upon us now.

Example: Drupal

Taking this class… Drupal is…

Is a free and open source modular framework and Content Management System (CMS) written in the programming language PHP.

It is used as a "back end" system for many different types of Web sites, ranging from small personal blogs to large corporate and political sites

The instructor says… ‘Yes, Drupal should be around for at least a few more years.’

(next framework is python) I was thinking – it will take me at least 6-months to learn to use

it at a fundamental level Why am I taking this three-week long class?

What is Edgility… Edgility is a principle that I have chosen to guide me as I

rethink learning, organizations, and processes in a new era of information abundance.

Edgility is having the capability to leverage the power of networks (Edge Power) to rapidly learn and innovate in order to compete globally for work

Drupal example: if you are going to compete - you have to use an open source learning community.

Leadership

How does this relate to leadership? 1) If you want to stay current with leadership ideas –

must rely on others. 2) If you are going to lead others in the future you

must use collaborative technology.

Leaders must work to increase their Edgility. This means experimenting with use of Edgility tools (such as those introduced in this class) – and learning how to engage others through their use.

The beginning of a solution…

PLC / E Defined: "A Personal Learning Environment (PLE) is a

collection of free, distributed, web-based tools, usually centered around a blog, linked together and aggregating content using RSS feeds and simple HTML scripts."

Sean Fitzgerald http://tinyurl.com/25g7zn

Page 16: Educ709

The beginning of a solution…

PLC / E Defined: "PLE are very personal both in the sense of being

independent of the university or employer and in the sense of being hand-crafted. Even with a more ideal integrative application, PLE will still be highly customized to the needs and preferences of the learner."

Ray Sims- http://tinyurl.com/26jn5g

Page 17: Educ709

The beginning of a solution…

PLC / E Defined: “A definition for the term Personal Learning

Environment (PLE), remains elusive. Conception about what should constitute a PLE depends on the perspective of the creator”

"a Personal Learning Environment is a facility for an individual to access, aggregate, configure and manipulate digital artifacts of their ongoing learning experiences."

Ron Lubensky_ http://tinyurl.com/2khh6b

Questions:

How many have developed a Personal Learning Community?

Would someone like to describe their PLE / C?

Quick blueprint…

One blueprint on how to find conversation on any topic.

People new to social media are often frustrated when they are told to "join the conversation“ - because they aren't sure where to find the

conversation.Popularity isn't a perfect judge of quality by

any means, but it's a place to start
