Digital CitizenshipDigital Natives Digital ImmigrantsToday’s K – College Students Those people that were not born

into the digital world, but have accepted and adopted the many practices that digital technology has to offer.

Have always had: ComputersCell PhonesDigital MusicVideo Games

Technology has always been a part of their lives

As settlers maintain the accent of their native country so do Digital Immigrants.

•Prensky, M.(2001)

The Native Language / The Immigrant Accent

I check the Internet 1st for information

When I install a new program, I allow the program to teach me.

I read my email from the computer.

I edit electronic documents on the screen.

I send an email and do nothing else.

I email the URL of a cool website.

When placing a phone call I refer to it as making a phone call.

The Internet is not my 1st choice for information

When I install a new program, I read the manual.

I print my emails and then read them.

I print electronic documents to edit.

I send an email and call to verify receipt of it.

I call my coworkers in to look at a cool website.

When placing a phone call I refer to it as dialing a number.

Getting Started• What’s COPPA?

– In general, websites can not collect personal information from children under the age of 13. If a host is collecting personal information, you can’t use it with students under the age of 13.

• Get approval from your administrator.

Web 2.0 ConcernsWeb 2.0 Concerns

SecurityWho will be able to view the website? Look for tools that provide the option to create public,

private, or protected projects.

How much personal information of the students will be displayed on the World Wide Web?

▪Know COPPA Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ▪Develop usernames that provide no personal information.

What types of outside content such as advertisements and other material will students are exposed too?

Look for advertisement free or limited ad resources.

Integrity How much control will I have as the teacher? Can I set limits (permissions) on who edits and what they edit?

Many tools allow administrators to set user permissions and control what can be edited.

Will I have the ability to trace or track edits? Look for this feature when signing up. It is available with many host sites.

How soon will I know if changes have been made or comments added?

Certain host sites will provide the administrator with an email of changes when they occur.

Email My students don’t have email accounts. Some sites allow you to add users without email for free. Some require pay accounts.

Can counterfeit emails be used? Some sites allow counterfeit email address.
