Preparing educators and human services
professionals to serve a complex and changing society – that’s the goal of
Stark State College’s Education and Human Services
Division. It’s a curriculum that encourages and develops your critical
thinking, a skill vital to educating our society and in dealing with the vast and varied
needs around us.
Graduates of our education program can become professionals in public and
private schools, Montessori schools, Head Start, school-age and other programs. The associate
degree program also provides a solid foundation for further education. And human
and social services students find work as paraprofessionals
in a range of careers as knowledgeable workers sensitive to the unique needs and cultural
diversity of people of all ages and socioeconomic circumstances.
With a solid foundation in U.S. criminal law, corrections, ethics, policing
and crisis intervention, criminal justice grads are employed at every level of law enforcement.
Our graduates qualify for entry-level positions in federal, state and local law enforcement as
corrections officers, parole/probation officers, investigators and youth counselors.
Traditional and nontraditional students will find satisfaction and success in these careers and

our graduates to succeed and excel.

educationassociate of science in education (AS)The associate of science in education is designed as a university transfer
degree for students who wish to complete their first two years at Stark State
College and transfer to a four-year institution to complete the bachelor’s degree
in education for teacher licensure.
A minimum of 60 credits is required for the associate of science degree in
education. Students must earn the minimum credit subtotal in English, social
and behavioral sciences, arts and humanities, sciences and mathematics.
Students are strongly encouraged to meet with the bachelor’s degree institution
for area of concentration requirements to aid in the selection and transfer of
elective courses needed to complete the degree.

If you are interested in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in
education or human services, consider our associate
of arts or associate of science degrees as you plan the
next phase of your education. Both degrees provide
a solid foundation in general education with special
emphasis on the baccalaureate degree you wish to
pursue. These transfer degrees are designed to be
an affordable, transferable beginning to a four-year

early childhood educationA holistic, child-centered approach to educating children that promotes the
appreciation of the diversity and special needs of today’s children and families
is the focus of the associate degree in early childhood education. This program
provides early childhood education graduates with a solid basis for pursuing
bachelor’s degree in education and related fields. Teacher training emphasizes
developmentally appropriate curriculum design and instruction based on
guidelines set by the National Association for Education of Young Children
(NAEYC) and Ohio standards. The program includes extensive field observations
and a 210-hour practicum in an approved early childhood setting.
The qualified candidate for the associate degree in early childhood education
will demonstrate professional knowledge, abilities, dispositions, values, and
attitudes regarding child development and learning, curriculum development
and implementation, family and community relationships, assessment and
evaluation, professionalism, and practice during field experiences.
Students are required to complete an education application packet. The education application packets are distributed to students when enrolled in Introduction to Early Childhood Education (EDU121) or Curriculum Design and Instruction (EDU122). Upon successful completion of the education program and with the recommendation of the education department chair, graduates may apply for their pre-kindergarten associate license from the Ohio Department of Education.
infant and toddler majorThe education infant and toddler major prepares students for employment in educational/child care settings that provide services to infants and toddlers and their families, such as Early Head Start. This program focuses on knowledge and skills needed to meet the developmental needs of infants and toddlers, create responsive and safe environments, and develop secure and trusting
relationships with children and families while supporting successful parenting.
intervention specialist majorThe education intervention specialist program prepares students for employment in educational and child care settings that provide services to children with special needs while providing students with a solid basis for pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education and related fields. administrator certificate for early childhood professionalsThe administrator certificate for early childhood professionals is for those
already employed in the early childhood field who are interested in becoming
administrators in an early childhood setting. The program will provide
individuals with a general overview of the administrative responsibilities
needed to operate and supervise an early childhood program. A 210-
hour practicum gives students an opportunity to apply administrative
and leadership knowledge and skills while supervised by an experienced
early childhood program administrator. The certificate may be applied to
an associate degree in business, early childhood education or bachelor’s
degrees in these fields or related fields.
American sign language The American sign language (ASL) certificate is designed for individuals
who want to learn about persons who are deaf and their unique culture and
community. This one-year certificate program provides a general overview
of the deaf community and will enhance your knowledge of American Sign
Language. Students must complete ASL courses with a grade of “C” or
better.

criminal justice/homeland defenseStark State College’s criminal justice/homeland defense one-year certificate is for individuals exploring a career as part of the nation’s defense against terrorism attacks and threats from natural disasters.
Students who successfully complete this certificate program will receive 24 credit hours toward their associate of arts degree in criminal justice – corrections option, or 21 credit hours toward an associate of applied science degree in homeland security information technology (national security preparedness, response, and operations).

regarding criminal behavior. Stark State’s curriculum will provide students with
a solid foundation in areas of criminal law in the United States, corrections,
ethics, policing and crisis intervention. Criminal justice embodies every level
of law enforcement with many career paths. Stark State graduates may expect
to qualify for entry level positions in federal, state, and local law enforcement,
including corrections officers, parole/probation officers, investigators and youth
counselors.

employment in federal, state, and local corrections facilities. Graduates may

students for entry level positions in federal, state, and local law enforcement.
It also helps current law enforcement officers to position themselves for
advancement within the ranks.

law enforcement academyStark State College, in cooperation with the Ohio Peace Officer Training
Commission and the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, offers the law enforcement
academy for individuals interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement.
This is an intensive program which meets Monday – Thursday evenings from
5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m., Saturdays from 8–5 p.m., and approximately five
Sundays 8–5 p.m. A new academy begins each spring, summer and fall
semester and runs for approximately eight months.
Students must enroll in all courses concurrently as identified for each semester.
All instructors are certified by the Ohio Peace Office Training Commission.
Individuals who successfully complete the law enforcement academy one-year
certificate program and pass the practical exercises are eligible to take the
state (Ohio Basic Peace Officer Certification) examination.
Individuals who are already sworn officers may complete the law enforcement
academy one-year certificate to be certified.
human and social servicesThe human and social services program prepares students for employment as
paraprofessionals in the field of social work. Career opportunities are in a wide
range of human and social services. The human services field is concerned
with those services and occupations that provide for meeting the diverse needs
of individuals and/or families for a more satisfying, self-sufficient way of life.
Social services personnel must be knowledgeable about and sensitive to the
unique needs and cultural diversity of people of all ages and socioeconomic
circumstances. Students participate in a supervised practicum as well as
classroom instruction to help develop and enhance professional skills.
human and social services/chemical dependency majorThe associate of applied science in human and social services- chemical
dependency major is designed for those interested in counseling individuals,
groups and families affected by alcohol or other drug dependency. According
to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), 75 percent of the clients
served by social workers have substance abuse/dependency disorders, but
only three percent of the social workers have certifications/licensure to work
with this population.
This program provides students entering the field of alcohol and drug treatment
with knowledge of theory and practice used to effectively treat persons with
substance abuse and dependency disorders.
Students graduating in this program will be provided the knowledge to take
the licensure examination for chemical dependency counselors with a two-year
associate degree.
Background checks are completed and submitted to BCI and FBI prior to acceptance into the program. Individuals who have been convicted of a felony, domestic violence, or drug convictions will not be eligible for the law enforcement academy one-year certificate program.

human and social services/gerontology majorThe human and social services - gerontology major provides students with
knowledge and understanding of the normal but highly variable process
of aging and human development. The major prepares students to be more
effective in working with older adults and in the implementation of programs
and services for the elderly. The gerontology major is designed for the
professional or paraprofessional individual currently working in the field of
aging, students who anticipate working with older adults, and anyone who
is interested in understanding the aging process for personal or professional
reasons.
human and social services/gerontology multi-disciplinary certificate The gerontology multi-disciplinary certificate enhances the careers of those
majoring in various fields at Stark State College. It is advantageous to human
and social service workers who plan to work with older adults and their
families, as well as health technology majors who assist in the medical care
of an aging population. It is beneficial to business technology majors who will
assist with retirement planning and need to understand the consumer behavior
of the older population. It also will help architectural drafters and computer
programmers who will assist in maintaining older adults’ independence for as
long as possible.

paralegal studiesParalegals assist attorneys in the preparation of legal documents, conduct legal
research, interview clients, and perform a variety of other tasks in a law office.
Paralegals may be employed by private law firms or work in government offices.
Paralegals are more directly involved with legal case work than legal assistants.
Their career preparation requires a more extensive legal background, as well
as in-depth training in legal research and case resolution; most paralegals
have an associate or bachelor’s degree.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics,
employment opportunities for paralegals are growing faster than average
compared to other occupations, with a projected growth of 28 percent in the
profession by 2018.
