557 Macnab/Larocca Research Fellowship Award The International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS) has established a research Fellowship to promote and extend research activities into the cause and cure of low back pain. The Fellowship is awarded annually based upon the merits of the applicant, as judged by the scientific committee of the ISSLS. Currently, a stipend of US$15.000 will be granted to the recipient. A prospective applicant should have completed formal training in a medical or allied specialty and should be involved in an investigation of a specific problem which would be furthered by travel to a location other than his own. Applicants must be members of the ISSLS or sponsored by one of its members. The competition is open to all qualified investigators who may apply singly or as a representative of a group. Application is to be made by a letter to a committee, specifying the details of the topic to be pursued, the location to which the Fellow would travel to further his study, and the expectations arising from the venture. Along with the letter of application, a prospective Fellow should provide a curriculum vitae for each proposed investigator and a statement of spon- sorship of the applicant from a member of the ISSLS, as well as a letter from the institution the applicant intends to visit, confirming acceptance of the visit. The curriculum vitae of the researcher to be visited should also be included. Four copies of each should be submitted. Applications for the 1995 competition must be received byJanuary 1,1995. The committee will announce its selection at the annual meeting of the ISSLS in Helsinki, Finland, June 18 - 22, 1995. The recipient of the 1995 Fellowship award should be prepared to present a report of his efforts to the 1996 annual meeting. Applications should be submitted to the ISSLS, Sunnybrook Medical Centre, Room A 309, 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto, Canada M4N 3M5 (tel 416 480 4833, fax 416 480 6055). London Sports Course Successes A third course at the London Hospital Medical College led to 22 students obtaining the Diploma in Academic and Practice Physiotherapy for Sports in June 1994. Of this year’s intake, initially of 28 students, 21 completed successfully during this year. In addition, one student who had not been able to find time to complete her project during last year was able to complete this year, and also gained her diploma. Amanda Goodwin gained a distinction and won the €250 prize for the most outstanding student. Seven students were awarded the diploma with merit. Others receiving the diploma were: Julie Baldwin, Sarah Barrett, Claire Bissett, Helen Chesser, Susan Domleo, Barbar Gamman, Gail Hacking, Susan Julians, Ann McCarthy, Jan Naughton, Liz O’Sullivan, Sarah Owen, Mary Sexton, and Janine Thomas. Three of this year’s students who had to drop out during the course for personal reasons still hope (and are allowed) to complete in another year. At an open daylreunion this year’s students presented their research results in poster form and a number of reports of publishable quality were produced. Four students spoke about their research and a lecture was given by Miss Ann Quinn, a sports science consultant based in Victoria, Australia, who was visiting London primarily to work with players at the Wimbledon tournament. This open day brought together teachers, tutors, and students from last year, this year and next - thus providing a sense of continuity. Another course will begin on November 28, 1994. At the time of writing, about two- thirds of the places are full. This will be the last course to run while the London Hospital Medical College is an indep- endent entity, but it is expected that it will continue within the newly established School of Health Sciences of Queen Mary and Westfield College, after the completion of merger arrangements between the Colleges of The London, St Barthol- omew’s, and QM&W. On present plans, this will formally take place in August 1995.
