3 courses which cover introductory, essential material for “general practitioners” in lands will be required

• History, Legislation and Fundamentals

• Collective and Individual Interests

• Third Party Interest on Reserve Land: Leases and Permits

• Additions to Reserve/Reserve Creation

• Environmental Management

• Reserve Land Designation and Commercial Leasing

• Matrimonial Real Property and Estate Management

Accreditation

• Courses will be designed to meet university requirements for accreditation, including contact hours and learning assessments

• Will adapt existing toolkits for PLMCP to meet requirements

• Development of assignments and other assessment methods

• PLMCP will continue as 18-credit set of courses

• 5 day trainings will be 3-credit courses

• 3 day trainings will be 1.5 credit courses

Institutional partnership development

Institutional partnership development

• NALMA board has selected 2 priority regions for institutional partners in the short term:• Ontario• British Columbia

• Algoma University in Sault Ste Marie has been selected for Ontario region and curriculum development is underway• Goal: Level I at Algoma University in place May 2019

• We are in the early stages of finding a partner in BC

• We welcome your suggestions on potential partners

Criteria for institutional partners

• Enable First Nations to take PLMCP closer to home

• Criteria for institutional partners

• Strong relationship with Indigenous communities, cultures, knowledge

• Relatively large population of Indigenous students

• Strong support services for Indigenous learners

• Indigenous faculty

• Existing programming in land management or related programming

• Willingness/enthusiasm to partner with NALMA and deliver training

Policy has been designed to:

• Streamline training delivery and ensure consistency across NALMA training events and units

• Ensure consistency in decision-making

• Address on-going issues

• Provide clarity to NALMA board, staff and members

• Document current practices and procedures

• Answer questions for new staff and members

Education and training policy: highlights

• Addresses on-going issues such as “no shows”

• Provides clarity with respect to reimbursements (i.e. eligible and ineligible expenses, guidelines for reimbursements for meals and incidentals while away)

• Clarifies policies for sharing toolkits and other NALMA materials

• Confirms who access to NALMA training, costs to attend for others (i.e. consultants, lawyers, etc.)

• Documents PLMCP policies from PLMCP student handbook

• Communication is key!
