What role do learning spaces play in student and faculty engagement?

How can the built environment encourage and support collaboration?

How can a campus better reflect the diverse nature of today’s student population?

Changes on campuses represent both an opportunity and a challenge. Societal changes are influencing how instructors teach and students learn. Technology, always evolving, continues to affect the way we communicate, research, teach, and learn. And record-high enrollment is resulting in a larger, more diverse student body. All of these factors place new demands on campuses and the learning spaces within them. Opportunity lies in how you respond to these changes.

Page 4: Education Catalog

Through research and conversations with students, educators, planners, and leadership, we have identified six characteristics that reflect and support changing learning spaces—characteristics that can help you create opportunity.

Situated steps away from a leading hospital and medical school, New

Brunswick Community College’s Allied Health Education Centre is ideally

positioned to train the province’s next generation of healthcare workers. Classrooms, faculty workstations,

administrative offices, common areas—virtually the entire building

is furnished with Herman Miller.

After reviewing multiple bids for the project, an independent

consultant concluded that Herman Miller offered the best long-term

value—especially after factoring in the 12-year, no-fine-print warranty.

The environmental attributes of Herman Miller products also swayed

the college, which is seeking LEED certification for the building.

St. Louis UniversityReinert Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning

Suspecting that the way classrooms have looked and worked for decades

might not be the smartest approach in the years to come, Saint Louis University

has transformed one into a learning studio—a laboratory for figuring out the

classroom of the future.

“We think of our learning studio as a pilot classroom—a place to try out ideas that

eventually can be implemented across the university,” says Dr. Paaige Turner,

associate vice president, international and academic affairs. “The reception from both

faculty and students has been very positive. We’re gradually learning what works best

and deciding what features we’d like to implement elsewhere on campus.”

Davenport UniversityPeter C. Cook Center

Located in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, in a previously vacant building, Davenport University's

Peter C. Cook Center makes a bold statement. The location provides close proximity to downtown foot traffic and

easy access for executives and their staff. “We wanted to create a destination that would appeal to executives and young professionals seeking to enhance their

careers with a Davenport MBA,” states Marisa Buscaglia, Director of

Graduate Program Recruitment.

With this in mind, Davenport designed a space that would be both functional

and flexible for its MBA students, members of the local organizations,

and the community.

Our designs have received numerous awards and accolades throughout the decades. But for us, the real pleasure is benefiting the person, and knowing our products are healthful and support people in the ways they learn and work together.

PRODUCT INDEX

Herman Miller has a rich history of partnering with outstanding designers—Gilbert Rohde, George Nelson, Charles and Ray Eames, Alexander Girard, Isamu Noguchi, Robert Propst, Bill Stumpf, Studio 7.5, and Yves Béhar to name a few. They have taught us a habit of mind that begins with a problem, researches possibilities, and produces a durable, functional, and beautiful solution.

In designing our products, we strive to find original solutions. We apply the same rigor to the way we do business. In 1953, our founder D.J. DePree stated, “We will be good stewards of the environment.” Our environmental advocacy continues to lead our industry. Our Design for the Environment program, rooted in MBDC Cradle to Cradle design principles, works to ensure our products, new and existing, meet environmentally sensitive design standards. Our commitment to environmental leadership has driven innovation in our processes and inspired others.

Alongside the Herman Miller solutions shown here, we offer products by Colebrook Bosson Saunders®, Geiger®, Nemschoff®, Luxo®, Magis®, Mattiazzi, SitOnIt,

and Theatre Solutions, Inc. Each brand brings a dedication to design, attention to detail, and respect for the environment. They complement Herman Miller’s portfolio and together, we offer a broad set of solutions for every area on campus.

SAYL CHAIRS Designer: Yves Béhar

Sustainability has long been on the mind of designer Yves Béhar. Together with his fuseproject team, Béhar pushes the boundaries of technology, materials, and production, while remaining keenly aware of the environmental impact of his designs. This was certainly the case with the SAYL chair. Working together with Herman Miller, each element of the chair was examined, down to a microscopic level, to ensure that, “every molecule in the product is working harder.” An approach Béhar refers to as eco-dematerialization; “fewer parts and less material means a smaller footprint and ultimately less cost.”

A critical element in achieving more with less is SAYL’s full suspension back. Frameless, it has no hard edges. Different degrees of tension are infused into the propriety material of the injection-molded back. This provides the right kind of ergonomic support and flex for the lower back and spine.

The SAYL chair is MBDC Silver Cradle to Cradle certified, contains no PVC, and is 93 percent recyclable.

CAPER: A Chair That Gets in Situations

The Caper chair, as its name implies, has a tendency to end up in the middle of situations: from classrooms, common areas, and collaborative spaces, to libraries, lecture halls, and auditoriums. It’s ideal for spaces where flexibility is encouraged, smaller scale is important, and budget matters.

Students move, faculty move, and the learning environment changes—furniture should easily adapt with that constant flux. Caper chairs provide the kind of flexibility active students and faculty crave. Lightweight, portable, stackable, movable— they help people come together, move around—whatever the need demands.

Caper is 100 percent recyclable and made of 21 percent recycled material. It weighs about half as much as competitive models; fewer materials and less energy are required for its manufacture. Certified both MBDC Cradle to Cradle Silver and GREENGUARD, Caper complies with BIFMA e3 level 2 and may contribute to LEED credits.

SWOOP LOUNGE FURNITUREDesigner: Brian Kane

Swoop designer Brian Kane understands that learning is a social activity. As a teacher at the California College of Art, Kane had a perfect opportunity to watch students gather and interact with furniture.

“Students don’t really sit in a chair,” observed Kane. “They sprawl. They lie. They perch.” So, he set out to create “a versatile lounge seating and table solution that gives people the freedom to move and create spaces that suit their needs.”

Traditional lounge seating locks people in. “Swoop provides freedom to move around,” says Kane, the freedom for students to throw their arms or legs over the swooping curves and still be comfortable and well-supported.

Simply begin with your table shape—even a shape you design. Choose a finish, then select from several leg styles and finishes. Then choose a height—standard, adjustable, or standing. Choose casters or glides. Add power and data with Connect inserts, which allow easy access to power and data.

You can even specify tops that flip, so that the tables can be nested for efficient storage.

THE EYES ALWAYS WIN

When monitor, chair, and desktop don't move, people move their heads to get the viewing distance that's right for them. They hold their bodies in uncomfortable postures. That causes strain. Making everything movable puts the person in control.

Viewing a monitor is affected by two dimensions, and there is no universal ideal. The first is seated eye height, which can vary by 11.4 inches among U.S. adults. The second, and perhaps more important dimension, is viewing distance. Research shows that when people are free to adjust the monitor, they choose a distance between 20 inches and 39 inches—a huge range.

Furthermore, viewing distance often changes with age, as well as throughout the day. Even young people experience near-vision fatigue, which can be offset by adjusting the screen distance.

Right now the mouse and keyboard are the two primary input devices, but touch screens are gaining in popularity. Ergonomists encourage people to use different input devices throughout the day to reduce the risk of repetitive stress injuries. In order to accommodate touch screens, however, monitors must have a huge range of adjustment that allows them to be an input device one moment and an output device the next.
