Dear Educators:
The 2015 South Dakota State Fair Arts and Education Building hosted a remarkable showcase of talent from
across our state. Again, we were so impressed with the variety of talent that the youth of South Dakota
possess and it was wonderful to see their efforts rewarded. We truly have an outstanding group of students
and dedicated teachers in our state!
“South Dakota’s Largest Classroom” was a success again in 2015. It will be part of the 2015 State Fair
agenda. Schools from across the state participated with approximately 1000 students and teachers attending.
Watch for additional information on this program at, www.sdstatefair.com, under the special events tab.
Education is and always will be an important part of the South Dakota State Fair and you as teachers play a
vital role. We appreciate every educator and student who has been or is about to become involved in this
annual showcase of South Dakota talent! The youth divisions in art, literature, and photography portions of
the building were impressive and we hope even more young people will participate in these divisions this
next year! It is exciting to see young artists and writers taking their knowledge beyond the classroom and
sharing their original works with the people of South Dakota during the fair.
Please read through the following pages and make entries of your students’ work which has been completed
during the 2015-2016 school year. We will continue to award a “BEST OF SHOW” ribbon to each high
school grade level; all entries in all classes for that grade level will be eligible for this award. We will again
have a “featured class” in all grade levels. The topic is “The Great State of South Dakota” This class is open
to the student’s imagination with a connection to our state being the only criteria. There will be “Best of
Show” ribbons presented as indicated in the static book for the featured class. Please share the Education
Premium List with the other teachers in your school district. If you have participated in prior years, please
share your experience and knowledge with your peers who have not taken advantage of this opportunity to
showcase their students’ abilities.
Teachers, please note, students in grade five through eight may enter their poetry in the Prairie Winds
Competition. Winners in this division will have their work submitted for publication in the Prairie Winds
magazine. Students in grades one thru six may enter the Essay Contest! This year the topic is “Living the
Life in South Dakota! What’s great about our state?”
We again are offering the opportunity to nominate outstanding teachers for the Most Valuable Educator
Award. This award is for a teacher who is motivating his or her students and showcasing their students’
accomplishments. The 2015 MVE was Deniese Heisinger! Congratulations to a very deserving teacher. You
will find a nomination form at the back on the Education book. You are encouraged to nominate a deserving
teacher that you know for this award. Forms are located at the back of the book.
There is also a waiver in the Education book that must be signed by the parent if entering work from a child
in the Special Education section. This form must accompany the entry form. The Special Education
divisions have also been revised to allow for more competitive judging and to increase the number of ribbons
awarded.
Please let us know is there is anything that we can do to assist you in entering your students’ exhibits in this
year’s fair. Enjoy the rest of your school year!
See you this fall at the fair,
Art & Education Bldg Staff
PS Your students appreciated the effort you make to allow us to feature their projects at the SOUTH
DAKOTA State Fair; we see on their faces and hear it in their voices every time a young person smiles,
points, and announces “THAT’S MINE…I DID THAT”! Thanks for all you as educators do!!

Bring your students to the 2016 SD’s Largest Classroom! Thursday, September 1
st and Friday, September 2
nd
Get your students excited about the 2016 SD’s Largest Classroom! The State Fair designed this educational program to give students an opportunity to learn something that they may not otherwise have a chance to learn in their curriculum. SD’s Largest Classroom is Thursday, September 1st and Friday, September 2nd. The SD’s Largest Classroom is a great way to kick-start your school year! Plans for activities for the 2016 SD’s Largest Classroom are still in the works. However, you and your students can look forward to the programming including science activities, exotic animals, hands-on activities and much more. SD’s Largest Classroom Tidbits
The education program is free to students, teachers and chaperones. Parking is free. Lunch will be provided to SD’s Largest Classroom participants. This will accomplish
two things: 1) Help to decrease the cost the school faces in providing lunch for the students and 2) Prevent school lunches from getting mixed up with other schools.
For those who register for the 2016 SD’s Largest Classroom, a complete education packet will be sent out, which will include: list of programs with times, welcome letter, map, an informational booklet, wristbands, and an evaluation form.
If interested in attending, please fill out this form and return
to the SD State Fair Office.
