RCI CRE STATUS ACCREDITTED
EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT:
EMPOWERING INDIVIDUALS WITH MULTIPLE DISABILITY 27th and 28th February, 2016
at
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)
New Delhi
Background Note:
According to UNESCO: Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
Is based on the principles and values that underlie sustainable development.
Deals with the well-being of all four dimensions of sustainability-environment, society,
culture and economy.
Uses a variety of pedagogical techniques that promote participatory learning and higher
order thinking skills.
Promotes lifelong learning that is locally relevant and culturally appropriate.
Is based on local needs, perceptions and conditions, but acknowledges that fulfilling local
needs often has international effects and consequences.
Engages formal, non-formal and informal education.
Accommodates the evolving nature of the concept of sustainability.
Addresses content, taking into account context, global issues and local priorities.
Builds civil capacity for community-based decision-making, social tolerance,
environmental stewardship, an adaptable workforce, and a good quality of life.
And it is interdisciplinary.
No single discipline can claim Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), all discipline
can contribute to ESD. If one looks at ESD through the lens of Disability, many critical issues arise.
ESD and Disability is an interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary discipline that investigates the situation
disabled people face. It involves activists, teachers, artists, practitioners, and researcher. Disability
studies challenges the view of disability as an individual deficit or defect. Sustainability that can be
remediated solely through medical intervention or rehabilitation by experts and other service
providers and explores models and theories that examine social, political, cultural and economic
factors that define disability and help determine personal and collective responses to differences. It is
realized that individuals with disability are under-represented in the ESD discourse, that has an
immense impact on the sustainable future of individuals with disabilities. Further it is emphasized that
involving individuals with disabilities in ESD discourses is not only essential for individuals with
disabilities but this marginalised population have something to contribute to the ESD discourse
especially within the realm of the ability expectation discourse of ESD.
Message from the Director, NIEPMD:
Dr. Himangshu Das
The concept of mainstreaming disability is broadly defined as the inclusion of
individuals with disabilities in all aspects of development efforts.
Mainstreaming is a method, a policy and a tool for achieving social inclusion,
which involves the practical pursuit of non-discrimination and equality of
opportunity: mainstreaming disability is about recognizing persons with
disabilities as rights-holding, equal members of society who must be actively
engaged in the development process irrespective of impairment or other status,
such as race; colour; sex; sexual orientation; language; religion; political or
other opinion; national, ethnic, indigenous or social origin; property; birth or age.
Quality of Life (QOL) is seen as the product of the interaction of a number of different factors:
social, health, economic and environmental conditions; which cumulatively and often in unknown
ways, interact to affect both human and social development at the level of individuals and societies.
The aim of this International Conference is to provide a platform for deliberations and
sharing information on research initiatives, expertise, publications and best practices; with an aim to
improve the quality of life of individuals with Multiple Disabilities through Education and
empowerment ensuring sustainable development.
I am sure this international conference of rehabilitation professionals; would not only be a
feast for academic reflections; but also help address many important issues in sustainable
development and education of individuals with multiple disabilities and it would be a landmark in
many ways.
We await your participation and look forward to welcoming you to this Conference!
Thank you.

About Delhi:
Delhi is a city that bridges two different worlds, Old Delhi, once the capital of Islamic India, is
a labyrinth or narrow lanes lined with crumbling haveli’s and formidable mosques. In contrast, the
imperial city of New Delhi created by the British Rule is composed of spacious, tree-lined avenues
and imposing government buildings.
The City’s importance lies not just in its past glory as the seat of empires and magnificent
monuments, but also in the rich and diverse cultures. In Delhi, you will discover that the city is
sprinkled with dazzling gems Captivating ancient monuments, fascinating museums and art galleries,
architectural wonders, a vivacious performing-arts scene, fabulous eating places and bustling markets.
Delhi has been the political hub of India. Every Political activity in the country traces its roots
here. This was true even of the mythological era. The Pandavas of the Mahabharata had their capital
at Indraprastha, which is believed to have been geographically located in today’s Delhi.\
