MEMBER OF THE MONTH – ECO- SCHOOLS

Brief Introduction to the Eco-Schools Programme

Introduction to the Eco-Schools Programme The Eco-Schools Programme is an international ESD Programme which aims to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of a school. The Eco-Schools programme is the world’s largest environmental education programme which is a pupil-led initiative and involves a whole school approach. The Eco-Schools Process Eco-Schools work through a simple seven-step process as they implement behavioural change within the school and continually reduce their environmental impact. Watch Video

Eco-Schools Awards There are three level of Eco-Schools awards which are closely linked to the seven steps. Schools self-certify for Bronze and Silver and the highest award takes the form of the prestigious internationally recognised Eco-Schools Green Flag. The Eco-Schools programme is one of continual reduction of the school's environmental impact. Therefore, the Green Flag award requires renewal every two years.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION NEWS

Eco-Schools Topics There are ten topics for Eco-Schools to choose from. Schools are not expected to address all ten topics but identify topics to be focused on according to their own school’s requirements. In order to achieve the prestigious Green Flag, schools are required to study one major topic and two minor topics. The ten topics are:

Programme Delivery Eco-Schools is operated in Northern Ireland by the environmental charity Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful (formerly Tidy Northern Ireland) which is dedicated to the vision of a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Northern Ireland. 99% of all schools in Northern Ireland are now Eco-Schools. We have a number of delivery partners, including most councils, who can help schools with the topics, either by visiting their schools or by providing the necessary resources. Further Information

1. LEARNING ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT IS CRUCIAL – O’DOWD In November, Northern Ireland Education Minister John O’Dowd visited the RSPB’s environmental education programme at the CAFRE Greenmount Campus. The RSPB proposed that outdoor learning should be embedded in to the NI curriculum and that teachers are provided with training and support to deliver outdoor learning in nature. The Minister was supportive of the proposals and the RSPB will be following up the meeting with further discussions with DENI Curriculum advisors.

2. BIG SCHOOLS BIRDWATCH

Registration is now open for the 2015 Big Schools' Birdwatch; a simple educational activity that gets you and your class/group closer to the birds visiting your area.

The Birdwatch takes just one hour, and can be carried out at any point between 5 January and 13 February 2015. Every school or group that submits their results before the 20 February will be sent a certificate and free personalised minibeast poster as a thank you for taking part.

The Big Schools' Birdwatch works across a wide age and ability range. There's plenty of flexibility to run it as simply as you like: as the centrepiece of cross-curricular studies, Eco-Schools awards, or as part of work to improve your school grounds. By taking part you'll also be providing us with data on how well some of our most familiar birds are faring, as well as helping to give nature a home at your school.

We have specially designed resources for the under-fives, the 5 – 11s, and for 11 and older, all of which can be found on our resources page. The Birdwatch can also be adapted for youth groups such as Brownies and Cubs. For more information go to www.rspb.org.uk/schoolswatch2015.

3. SCIENCE FESTIVAL READY TO LAUNCH

The final two weeks in February 2015 will see Northern Ireland host its first large scale festival celebrating the wonders of science, technology, engineering and maths. The 11 day festival, held between the 19th February to 1st March 2015, will focus on providing young people, adults and families with a wide range of interactive workshops, inspirational talks, project displays and exciting hands–on activities.

Sponsored by the Department for Employment and Learning and Belfast City Council, the Northern Ireland Science Festival will host over 50 events primarily in Belfast with satellite events across Northern Ireland. Ultimately the festival aims to bring science to the wider public in a way that will have a lasting positive effect throughout the country by interweaving an awareness of science into our society. The festival is working closely with key organisations such as W5, the Northern Ireland Science Park, the

Institute of Physics, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the University of Ulster, Queens University, the Open University, Colleges NI, Sentinus, the BBC and the Institute of Engineering and Technology to develop a busy 11 day programme of activity. These events will cover different fields of STEM innovation, including digital technology, health, physics, biology, chemistry, engineering and maths. Given that families, peers and societal influences exert a considerable influence on students’ aspirations, the Festival will aim to raise the level of science capital in society by targeting a wide spectrum of age groups and abilities. Alongside the annual festival, the festival has a strong focus on providing a promotional platform for other STEM events, helping to coordinate and promote events across the region beyond the main festival dates. With a programme being developed and launched in January 2015, the festival is encouraging local businesses, STEM focused organisations, schools and anyone with an interest in STEM to get involved through either hosting, taking part or sponsoring an event. KEY STAGE TWO RESERVOIR SAFETY POSTER COMPETITION NI Water would like to invite your school to participate in their Annual Schools Competition.

NI Water as the sole provider of water in Northern Ireland, own over 40 reservoirs. These open water bodies can be extremely dangerous places. On a warm summers day the water may look like a tempting place to cool down or in the winter they may freeze and look like a natural ice rink. People may be attracted to swim or walk on the ice which can result in serious injury or even

death as people get into difficulty.

LOCAL PEOPLE PLANT TREES AS A TRIBUTE TO WAR HEROES This month, schoolchildren and community groups are donning welly boots to plant free trees from the Woodland Trust, with almost 15,000 saplings set to grace the Northern Ireland landscape. The tree-planting events, organised by groups across the country, are part of the Woodland Trust’s Centenary Woods project – an ambitious UK-wide campaign to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War. The trees planted this November will be a lasting and peaceful tribute to the countless individuals who played a part in, or were affected by, the war. Patrick Cregg, director of the Woodland Trust, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to come together and create a lasting legacy to ancestors and communities who lived and died during the war. “At the same time, the trees planted will help make schools and neighbourhoods greener and healthier, while providing much-needed homes for wildlife. “And, of course, the tree-planting activities are very much in keeping with National Tree Week. Run by the Tree Council, Tree Week marks the importance of trees and woods, and this year runs from 29 November to 7 December 2014.”

7. LOCAL MAN LIFTS TOP AWARD

Peter Lyons, a local volunteer from Bangor in County Down, has won two prestigious Volunteer of the Year awards from conservation charity the Woodland Trust.

Peter received the Oak Award for ‘Most Outstanding Support’ at the charity’s annual volunteer conference held in Leeds.

And, putting Northern Ireland firmly on the map, Peter was also named the Woodland Trust’s ‘Overall Volunteer of the Year 2014’ and was presented with the Watkins memorial medal. Peter is the first person ever in Northern Ireland to win this UK award.

The awards were presented by Chief Executive of the Woodland Trust Beccy Speight and Woodland Trust President Clive Anderson.

Peter has been involved in several roles at the Woodland Trust, including photographer, researcher, speaker and ancient tree hunter. Having volunteered for over seven years, he has worked with a wide range of groups and individuals, including corporate partners and landowners – and even crafted a wooden bowl for HRH The Princess Royal.

Patrick Cregg, Director of the Woodland Trust in Northern Ireland, said: “Peter is an enthusiastic, talented and dedicated volunteer, who is highly thought of by each and every member of the team. It’s an honour to know and work with Peter, and I’m so glad that he has received the recognition he deserves.”

Lynn Thompson, Volunteering Development Champion, said: “The Woodland Trust is incredibly lucky to have the support of volunteers around the UK. Their continuous and unrelenting efforts go a long way in achieving our goals of creating, protecting and restoring native woodland, and the Volunteer of the Year award is one way we can show all of our volunteers that we really value their outstanding effort. We couldn’t do it without them.”

Each year the Woodland Trust gives awards to the most outstanding volunteers for their talent and dedication. Winners are selected from nearly 2,000 volunteers all over the UK, who in 2013 dedicated over 140,000 hours of their time.

To find out how you can get involved as a volunteer visit www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/volunteer

8. GREEN TEACHERS ARE ‘TWO’ GOOD

For the first time in the competition’s history, two Northern Ireland primary school teachers have been named separate winners in the Belfast Harbour Green Teacher of the Year Award.

Mr Stevenson from Lough View Integrated Primary School lifted the title for the Greater Belfast area, while Mr Black from Phoenix Integrated Primary School in Cookstown was crowned as the ‘greenest teacher’ from schools throughout the rest of Northern Ireland.

Organised by Belfast Harbour and Action Renewables, the Green Teacher of the Year Award seeks to reward primary school teachers for taking responsibility for the environment and eco issues by calling on pupils to write about the work their teacher does in this field.

The winning teachers were announced by Environment Minister Mark H Durkan and congratulated by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Nichola Mallon at an arts–themed Challenge Day delivered at the MAC by Young at Art.

Speaking at the Challenge Day, the Environment Minister said: “It is a pleasure to see what young people in Northern Ireland are doing to protect and improve our environment. This competition shows how well young people understand the issues and recognises adults who are Champions for the Environment. The teachers whom we celebrate here today have inspired their changes in school to make a difference by leading by example and that is the best teaching of all.

“I congratulate all the finalists as well as our winners, Mr Stevenson from Lough View Integrated Primary School, Belfast, and Mr Black from Phoenix Primary School, Cookstown, for showing true inspiration and leadership to the next generation.

“This in turn will encourage them to take up the challenge and ensure our environment and economy are protected and grown in the future as well as today.”

It is the second time in four years that Mr Stevenson has been successful, having won the award in 2010. Mrs Simpson from Fleming Fulton School came second in the Greater Belfast area section, with Miss McClean of Oakwood Primary in third place.

Mrs Lowry of Mullavilly PS Stakeholder Public Relations / Public Affairs / Event Management / Graphic Design in Laurelvale finished second in the rest of NI section, with Mrs Collins of Cookstown PS coming third.

There were 110 entries which were judged by a panel of experts, including Jenni Barkley, Communications and Corporate Responsibility Manager, Belfast Harbour, Gail McGarvey, Deputy Director, Play Resource Centre, Catherine Gleave, Education Officer, RSPB, and Laura Coey, Education Officer, Action Renewables.

9. CONSERVATION BEES BRING THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS

Things have been all of a buzz at the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre recently as the Interpretive team of the

Page 10: Education for Sustainable Development Forum E -Bulletin In This … · Education for Sustainable Development Forum E -Bulletin . In This Issue . News from the ESD Forum . 1. ESD Forum

December 2014

Conservation Service have been celebrating the success of their Bee Hive project by producing their first jars of Oxford Island Honey!

The Interpretive team took on the challenge of developing bee hives at Oxford Island in 2012. Now in its third year, the project has gone from strength to strength and there are 2 active hives based at Artspace on the reserve. Three of the Interpretive team are trained beekeepers keepers and members of the Dromore Beekeepers Association, having undergone both basic and intermediate training. The hives are checked on a weekly basis to ensure the colonies are in good health. During 2014 the project had developed and progressed so well and the colonies of bees

thriving on the nearby wildflowers meadows at Oxford Island that it has been possible to harvest some of the honey and bottle it – a first for the team and for Oxford Island!, and a great achievement for a team dedicated to conserving local wildlife.

Managed honey bees contribute directly to local food production and make an important contribution, through pollination, to crop production and maintenance of a healthy environment. The bees forage on the nearby species rich grassland which is abundant at Oxford Island and contains a great variety of wildflower species unspoiled by the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides.

10. ‘FUTURE ENVIRONMENT MINISTER’

Nicholas Jamison, ‘Future Environment Minister’, at the Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful 60th Anniversary Celebration Event. Lagan College pupil, Nicholas Jamison, recently spoke at the Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful 60th Anniversary Celebration at the Glasshouse in Stormont. Addressing an audience of current Ministers, local celebrities, business leaders, community groups, environmental champions and Eco-Schools pupils, the ‘Future Environment Minister’ reported that in 2028, through the work of Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, the Northern Ireland public had fully supported campaigns to reduce litter, waste and CO2 emissions and actively take care of their local environment. In doing so, his role had almost become redundant as the people of Northern Ireland became environmental champions.

11. THE WHEELIE BIG CHALLENGE Eco-Schools and Belfast City Council are delighted to launch a new, fun, waste themed, project and competition called the Wheelie Big Challenge for schools in Belfast City Council. Wheelie’s challenge is action based and the competition will be judged not just on the amount of waste reduction but also on the actions taken and campaign run in the school and at home to reduce waste. Shortlisted entries will be invited to Belfast City Hall in June to present a final display outlining their waste actions.

Page 11: Education for Sustainable Development Forum E -Bulletin In This … · Education for Sustainable Development Forum E -Bulletin . In This Issue . News from the ESD Forum . 1. ESD Forum

December 2014

The closing date for competition entries is 8th May 2015. Prizes for Primary and Post Primary School are: First Place - £500 Second Place - £300 Third Place - £200 The Challenge is based around 4 key areas: Wheelie’s Workshop, Wheelie Big School Audit, Wheelie Big Competition and Wheelie Big Celebration. For see our website for more information on the Wheelie Big Challenge. 12. NEW HUMAN SUNDIAL FOR OXFORD ISLAND

A new human sundial feature has recently been installed close to the new Lough Neagh Discovery Centre for use by visitors to the reserve.

Sundials or sun-clocks have been found all over the world and have been used by people for thousands of years. They come in a variety of shapes and types and all tell the time by casting a shadow over a number or marker that indicates the time.

The Oxford Island sundial, which had been developed and installed by the Interpretive team based at the Centre is a Human or ‘Analemmatic’ Sundial’. It is a type of horizontal sundial in which the shadow casting object, also known as a gnomon, is vertical and is moved depending on the apparent movement of the suns location in the sky over the course of the year.

The sundial is very simple to use and it is already proving a big hit with visitors as they try out the new feature and examine the large granite stones carved with wildlife found on-site on the reserve. 13. OPERATION ENERGY POWER DOWN DAY

Over 100 schools from across Northern Ireland took part in this year’s SSE Airtricity, Operation Energy, Power Down Day as part of international Eco-Schools World Days of Action. Results so far are showing a great result again this year. Dundonald Primary School sent this report of the actions they took on the day:

“Dundonald Primary School saved a lot of electricity during Power Down Day. The Eco-Committee made big and bright posters to remind everyone about the special day. All of the teachers and pupils tried their best to help out with saving energy. The classes turned off computers, interactive whiteboards and lights to save power. We went with our caretaker, Mrs Boyce, to take electricity readings every day from Monday to Friday. Power Down Day was a great success - we used 20% less electricity! This was a really good result as the day was very wet

and dark and we needed more lights on.” Aliah and Stephanie, Dundonald Primary Eco-Committee.
