3
Level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC)Equivalent to the first year of universityThe HNC is a level 4 vocational qualification that provides theoretical and practical knowledge in your subject. The HNC can be delivered over one or two years and stands alone from the HND. Once completed you may continue to study and top up to an HND at the college or honours degree at university.
Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND)Equivalent to the second year of universityThe HND gives you a full level 5 vocational qualification and a higher level of theoretical and practical knowledge in your chosen sector, equivalent to the first two years of a degree course. Studying for an HND usually takes two years full time or three years part time. HND courses can lead directly to employment or help you progress onto the final year of a full time honours degree.
Level 5 Foundation DegreeEquivalent to the second year of universityA foundation degree at college is a level 5 qualification which combines a mixture of academic and vocational study related to the industry sector you are studying. They are designed and delivered in partnership with universities and employers, and provide the knowledge and skills required for the workplace. Studying for a foundation degree usually takes two years full time or three years part time. After completing a foundation degree you will be able to progress into employment or onto the final year of a full time honours degree.
Level 6 Honours DegreeEquivalent to an honours degree at universityAn honours degree is awarded by a university and is a level 6 qualification. Studying for an honours degree usually takes three years full time or four and a half to five years part time. You can also top-up to an honours degree from your HND which will take one year full time or one and a half years part time.
