EDUCATION Our Impact: USAID works with the Government of Pakistan and development partners to increase access to and improve the quality of basic and higher educaon. Individuals make healthier, more economically advantageous life choices and are more likely to engage in their communies when they have access to quality educaon. The United States and the Government of Pakistan partner to provide quality basic educaon and market‐based workforce development training and research geared toward meeng the needs of the 21st century. In Pakistan, nearly 22.5 million children are out of school. Increasing access to educaon opportunies for out of school children is a USAID priority. USAID’s educaon programs provide emergency educaon to children displaced by military conflict, enroll new students in schools and non‐formal educaon programs, repair and construct schools in underserved communies, and work with communies to address barriers that keep students from enrolling and staying in school. Teachers make the biggest impact on what students learn. USAID partnered with Pakistan’s Higher Educaon Commission to develop two professional teaching degree programs, the Associate's and Bachelor’s Degrees in Educaon, now offered in 110 universies and teacher training colleges across the country. Reading is the foundaon of learning, earning, and crical thinking. By building a child’s reading skills at an early age, that child is more likely to succeed and ulmately stay in school. USAID has invested in training thousands of teachers on how to teach reading, developed teaching and learning materials in Urdu, Sindhi, and Pashto, established classroom libraries in thousands of schools, and encouraged schools to dedicate more classroom me for reading. Built or repaired 1,607 schools throughout Pakistan since 2009. Trained over 44,950 teachers and school administrators since 2013. Provided over 19,000 scholarships for talented students to aend terary educaon in Pakistan over the past nine years. Reached more than 1.7 million primary‐level learners through reading programs. Built 17 Facules of Educaon. USAID provides scholarships to talented low‐income and marginalized students and helps Pakistani universies improve their ability to manage financial aid programs. USAID also connects U.S. universies with experts in energy and water with Pakistani universies.
