Message from the MayorMessage from the Mayor

Welcome everyone and thanks for giving us an opportunity to learn from you and enrich our

recreational experiences together.

I am absolutely thrilled that Cochrane has been chosen to host the 2015 Northeastern Ontario

Recreation Association’s annual conference. Recreation and social development has been a focal

point for our community over the last several years where in many cases we have made significant

advancements and completely rethought our approach. Today we are one of only four cities in all of

Ontario and the only community in Northern Ontario participating in the 8 to 80 cities pilots; we

have the first of what will hopefully be many bike sharing programs in Northern Ontario; we have a

$10 million dollar development plan for Lake Commando; we will be constructing an Arts and

Recreation Pavilion on the lake’s peninsula next spring that will be surely be another northern

wonder; and we have a comprehensive trail network planned that will span both short and long

distances between urban, rural and forested geography.

The conference has an action packed program planned with terrific speakers and rewarding

engagements that will be memorable for sure. If you find a moment though, take the time to go for a

paddle boat, kayak or canoe ride, or enjoy the beach at the lake. Just grab one of the bikes from the

bike share rack in front of the Tim Horton Events Center and exchange it with another at the beach

depot. You can even borrow a book from the book share depots or play a song on one of the pop

up outdoor pianos around town.

On behalf of our community, our council and the entire region that makes us so wonderfully

unexpected, thank you for being a part of the greatest way of life in the best backyard on the planet!

Best,

Peter Politis, Mayor | Maire | Okemah, The Town Of Cochrane

OPENING CEREMONY Remarks from Mayor Peter Politis - Chair 2015 conference - NeORA President

Cities for all: The role of parks and open spaces Keynote Gil Penalosa How can we create vibrant and healthy cities for everyone, regardless of age or social status? How can parks and open spaces improve the quality of life that attracts and retains people to their communities? How can we meaningfully engage citizens in the process of place making? Gil answers these questions in a dynamic and inspiring presentation about creating

more liveable cities that put people and nature at their center.

Drawing on his experience as Commissioner of Parks and Recreation in Bogota, Gil presents some of the now widely celebrated approaches to urban regeneration through investments in parks and public spaces. Gil also draws upon examples in cities at the forefront of innovation in public space reclamation that demonstrate the many benefits parks and public spaces

have on health, social inclusivity, and city vitality.

T1 Doable Neighborhoods Presenter: Isabelle Denault & J.P. Ouellette Town of Cochrane

In partnership with 8-80 cities, Cochrane has developed a plan to develop public spaces within the community that promote an active, social and sustainable lifestyle. The primary focus for this project is the business district of 6th avenue (downtown core) and the central public space of Lake Commando. Since 2014, we have implemented successful projects such as bike share

LUNCH & TRADE SHOW

T3 Board & Staff Professional Development - How to Play nice in the sandbox Presenter: Jeff Celentano Join session facilitator Jeff Celentano as you and your colleagues explore that perennial “thorny” issue – how do we determine roles in the organization and what skills do we need as staff leaders and professionals in dealing with Boards, Committees or municipal Councils in maintaining a positive relationship? This session will focus in on two key aspects of that issue. We will look at ‘formal governance’ in local (public) organizations and then we will look at a set of ‘Top 5 Tips’ to help staff be administrative leaders while respecting the ‘formal’ side of governance in your organizations. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll

smack your head and say “he just described where I work!!??” Don’t miss it!

T4 New Ontario Trillium Fund model Presenter: Doug Gore & Carmen Robillard Explore the close alignment of the new National Recreation Framework and the newly developed Investment Strategy of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. With both identifying desired outcomes including increased physical activity and literacy, greener communities, and improved social connections, the opportunity has never been better to work together. OTF will unveil their new framework for funding, the first significant change in 15 years, and ask for your input how to best invest in the things that

are most important to the recreation industry.

Doable Communities Field/Facility Tours Enjoy a tour of Lake Commando while riding bikes through Cochrane. You will have a stop at the community Piano where you will enjoy live entertainment right in the heart of the Community (downtown).

POLAR BEAR HABITAT TOUR & DINER Receive a tour of the Polar Bear Habitat and meet the two Polar Bears on site. You will meet the zookeepers who take care of the bears and watch them swim in their environment. A diner will be served in the Heritage Village with some fun and exciting games.
