Defining Educational TechnologyEducational technology is the study and
ethical practice of facilitating learning and
improving performance by creating, using
and managing appropriate technological
resources (Audio-Visual, electronic and
digital) and processes (systems, processes,
methods and techniques) both by
educators and learners.
PLACE OF USE OF ET IN PLACE OF USE OF ET IN EDUCATIONEDUCATION
ABC of Educational TechnologyABC of Educational Technology
A: Audio-visual aids to learning mechanized due to inventions (applied science or technological outcomes) to intervene into teaching-learning practices.
B: Broad basing education with the use of modern digitized communication technologies or e-connectivity pushed hard by market forces - knowledge industry
C: Creation of educational resources, systems and practices to hasten e-learning processes and use of technology-driven smart classrooms
D: Development of newer hardware and software in the field of knowledge industry
E: Evolving ET as a separate specialized knowledge and study area to produce experts as 'educational technologists'
TechnologyTechnology refer to machines, tools or
hardware and enabling software, systems, processes, methods of organization, techniques.
Some modern educational hardware and tools include but overhead projectors, LCD projectors, videos, multimedia, laptop computers with internet access, tablets, cameras, calculators, smart-phones , smart classrooms are beginning to draw serious attention for their learning potential.
Education technology needs to be adapted to instructional technology
Education technology meant to be integrated to the subscribed learning theory and instructional theory .
While instructional technology is "the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management, and evaluation of classroom processes utilizing daily lessons of curriculum and select resources for learning
Teacher as Educational Technologist: Emergent facilitative roleEducational Technologist is someone who transforms basic educational and psychological research into an evidence-based applied science (or a technology) of learning or instruction.
Must use ET as one of many instructional tools
Basic skill for educators: Drawing simple visualsEducational technology in a way could be traced
back to the emergence of very early tools, e.g., paintings on cave walls - simple visual representations of reality for interaction and communication.
Use of visuals and visual symbols to create mental images about the objects of the world as an important tool to learn -development of visual smartness.
After the advent of language and abstract symbols to be learned by relating them to visuals through flash cards to create mental images for a transition to sound symbols and written symbols.
Learning process: Place of visualsExperience > Analysis > Visual codification
(mental images) > Abstract codification > Practice / revision / recap > Internalization / Application
Many educators think that ET should be used for entry into a topic and revision
ET should not short circuit the process of learning
ET should not undermine the sociological and psychological foundations of education, ie, social isolation and stress on uniformity should be avoided
Technological and Pedagogical knowledge: Educators' Needs
Instructional support ValueInstructional support ValueTechnology in Education should be used • as media mediation for entry into topic as audiovisual communication • for instructional support•for revision of topics
Ideas…Look up information and ideas related to Current class discussionClass e-newspaper or e-journalClass web pageDrill and practiceUse computer group work to teach cooperative
learning skillsHave on-line projects and assignments that
children can work on for short periods of time throughout the year
Take or make a quizComplete or make a puzzleGraphics and visualsCreate and use very short and quick-time moviesVenn diagrams, concept maps
IntegrationExamine current unit or activity for ways to add technology
Rewrite the lesson unit to identify changes due to technology
Prepare visual materials and create schedule
Integrating Technology May…Change your instructional styleResult into effective and efficient instruction
Make instruction interesting Throw up new expectations from students for internet access
