Internal Audit Practitioner
The journey for students begins by obtaining the Internal Audit Practitioner designation. The Internal
Audit Practitioner designation demonstrates that you possess a common foundation of skills and
knowledge related to internal audit best practices. The designation is obtained by successfully
completing the CIA Part 1 exam, and puts you on the road to obtaining the CIA certification. Students
in their senior year can apply to the Internal Audit Practitioner program, or the CIA program as outlined
on the next slide.
Create profile in The IIA’s Certification Candidate Management System (CCMS)
Complete Internal Audit Practitioner application form (full-time students receive a discount)
Submit student verification form, character reference form, and photo ID
Register for CIA Part 1 and schedule exam date and location
Complete CIA application form (3 years to complete program)

Successfully complete CIA Part 1 to earn the Internal Audit Practitioner designation
Once earned, the designation is valid for 2 years
Register and successfully complete CIA Parts 2 and 3 (in any order)
Verify experience for certification

Juniors and Seniors
Students in their junior and senior year have the option of entering the CIA program without obtaining the Internal Audit Practitioner designation first.

• First edition of Sawyer’s Internal Auditing in 1973.
• In his bequest, Sawyer indicated that the royalties from the publication of Sawyer’s Internal Auditing be donated to the Foundation.
• The funds previously supported the presentation of the Foundation’s Larry Sawyer Project of the Year Award.
• 2019 Launch of the Larry Sawyer Educators’ Forum to advance research impacting the profession and further shape the education of future internal audit professionals.
Symposium Objectives
• Establish a forum for researchers to present end-stage or completed research and share aspects of classroom and practitioner applicability.
• Provide educators with new and innovative techniques for teaching internal auditing.
• Create an opportunity for researchers to present research concepts and proposals and receive feedback to refine the scope further to enhance value for practical application.

• The Internal Audit Academic
Awareness program recognizes the
various degrees of commitment and
effort universities are making to provide
students with the information and skill
sets necessary to be able to choose
from a variety of career paths.
• The Internal Auditing Education
Partnership (IAEP) program endorses
schools teaching an internal auditing
curriculum within a degree program
(undergraduate or post-graduate).
