NEWS AND COMMENT Edward J. Forrest receives alumnus award from University of Pittsburgh Edward J. Forrest is the 1987 recipient of the Distin- guished Alumnus Award of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Forrest earned his doctor of dental medicine and master’s and doctor of philosophy degrees at the university. In the 1940s and 50% Dr. Forrest practiced general dentistry in Ambridge, Pa. During this time he also served with the Army Dental Corps and Easter Defense Com- mand, where he became the chief dental surgeon of Boston. After his return from the service, he studied orthodontics and started an orthodontic practice in Sew- ickley, Pa. He also was appointed associate professor of orthodontics and director of Graduate Education at Pittsburgh’s School of Dental Medicine. In 1957, Dr. Forrest became associate dean and professor of orthodontics at the University of Illinois, where he was in charge of developing the assistant and teacher education programs. When he returned to Pitts- burgh in 1961, he developed a model dental assisting- oral hygiene program at the Teachers’ Institute. He also initiated the off-campus continuing education programs for Pennsylvania and Ohio dentists. In the mid-1960s he oversaw the revamping of the dental curriculum at Pittsburgh. Edward J. Forrest receives alumnus award from University of Pittsburgh Edward J. Forrest is the 1987 recipient of the Distin-

guished Alumnus Award of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Forrest earned his doctor of dental medicine and master’s and doctor of philosophy degrees at the university.

organizations; he served as a Pennsylvania delegate to the American Dental Association, a consultant to the Council on Dental Education, and a member of the Coun- cil on Dental Research. He was also president of the Beaver Valley Branch of the Dental Society of Western Pennsylvania.

In addition to membership in numerous dental so- cieties, Dr. Forrest is the coauthor of a book on ortho- dontics. In the early 196Os, he moderated 16 segments of a local television show, “Ask Your Dentist.” He has been the recipient of a plethora of awards honoring his many outstanding achievements.

In his community, Dr. Forrest has been a member of the Rotary Club, a football and basketball referee, and president of the .Ambridge Board of Education.

Dr. Forrest lhas been dean emeritus and interim chairman of the IDepartment of Orthodontics at the Uni- versity of Pittsburgh since 1983.

Call for papers from the European Orthodontic Society The 64th congress of the European Orthodontic So-

ciety will be held July 13-16, 1988, at the Barbican Centre in London.

The main themes will be (1) the supporting struc- tures of the teeth-biological and clinical implications, (2) orthodontic ‘treatment for adults-indications and management, and (3) free communications.

The closing date for receipt of offers of papers, ac- companied by abstracts, is Dec. 14, 1987. Further in- formation and forms on which abstracts must be sub- mitted may be obtained from the EOS Secretariat.

Registration forms for attendance at the congress will be circulated with the November issue of the Euro- pean Journal of Orthodontics or may be obtained on request from EOS Secretariat, c/o 72 Fielding Road, Bedford Park, Chiswick, London W4 lDB, England.

Distinguished alumnus achievement award to B. F. Dewel B. F. Dewel received the 1987 Iowa Distinguished

Alumnus Award on May 30, 1987, at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. Dr. Dewel was a member of the Iowa orthodontic staff from 1925 to 1929.

Dr. Dewel’s distinguished career as a clinician and teacher has included the editorship of the AMERICAN

JOURNAL OF ORTHODONTICS from 1968 to 1978. He is also a former Director of the American Board of Orthodon- tics and a Ketcham Award recipient. The B. F. and Helen Dewel Award of the American Association of Orthodon- tists was named in honor of Dr. Dewel.
