Two of Jacksonville’s private colleges came together on the gridiron in what both institutions hope will become an annual inner-city rivalry.

The Jacksonville University Dolphins hosted the Edward Waters College Tigers for the “Jacksonville Classic” October 17th.

“We don’t see each other as competition. We all want to be successful,” said EWC President Dr. Nathaniel Glover. “We think this collaboration could be the start of something special.”

Jacksonville University (JU) plays in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

EWC plays in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), but both teams have meet on the football field once before in 2002.

Both College’s had strong support from their alumni, faculty, staff and students. The Tigers and Dolphins Marching Bands both performed during half-time. Jacksonville University won the hometown showdown 49-28, but both teams put up a hard fight.

It has been decades since Professor H. Alvin Green directed the EWC Concert Choir, but his impact continues to be felt on the campus today.

Under the direction of one of his former students, Ms. Patricia Ann Black, the H. Alvin Green Memorial Alumni Choir continues to honor his legacy through their performances and community service.

“Many students benefitted from Professor Green’s generosity in the form of student scholarships for the choir. It was the only way many of his students could stay in school,” said Alumni Choir Director Patricia Black. “It is only right for all of us to continue what he

started with us.”

The H. Alvin Green Memorial Alumni Choir held a performance in the Milne Auditorium October 10th where the group presented $15,000 to President Nathaniel Glover for Edward Waters College students.

“Ten-thousand dollars is donated to be used toward student scholarships,” said Black. “The other $5,000 is designated for the EWC Concert Choir Fund.”

In addition to concerts, the H. Alvin Green Memorial Alumni Choir participates in community outreach. The group visits nursing homes; collect blankets and coats; and they provide book vouchers and scholarships to high school

students.

The 65 member choir is comprised of all religions, ages, schools and backgrounds.
