N INSTRUMENT which has a long and noble: history, the organ has had countless devotees; more-
over, performers have vied with each other to obtain new effects from it. Lenny Dee is one of those
who have injected fresh verve and vitality into modern organ arrangements. He has unquestionably a
style of his own. Whether he is making the organ strum like a banjo, or pulse with the beating of tom-
toms, or vibrate with the sensuous rhythms of an entire rhumba band, he reveals the innate musician as
well as the startling performer.
He has not always been an organist. When he was 7 years old, he entertained friends by playing
the banjo. Reared in Illinois and in Florida, he studied the piano-accordion ‘in his youth. The Navy
claimed him for three years; he was on an aircraft carrier which had a route between the West Coast
and Japan. After the war he took advantage of the G. I. Bill to enroll at the Conservatory of Chicago,
where he received his first lessons on the organ.
It was not long before he landed a series of bookings at some of the most prominent hotels in the
south. Encouraged by the response, he began featuring original ideas and novel rhythm arrangements
with floor shows. He was heard on a weekly network and, during an engagement at Nashville’s Planta-
tion Club, he signed a contract with Decca Records, largely through the interest of Red Foley.
Admirers of Lenny Dee claim that he can coax anything out of the organ: “Using Duke Ellington’s
‘Caravan,’” wrote Johnny Jones in the Columbus Dispatch, “Lenny Dee will start an imitation of
Harry James, then bring in Harpo Marx and his harp, Bobby Haggart on the bass fiddle, Gene Krupa
and his drums, and even Tommy Dorsey!” These recordings reveal the versatility of a star performer,
the skill of a gifted ‘arranger, and the taste of a true musician.
