13 regional seas 10 regional seas are directly influenced by EU nature legislation 5 721 000 km2 total surface area EEA host two databases on protected areas: • Common Database on Designated Areas • Natura 2000 database
EEA received data from HELCOM, OSPAR and Barcelona RSCs

• Consists of 7 725 sites and covers 338 600 km2
• Large differences in coverage between regional seas
• Large differences in coverage of coastal vs offshore waters
• Two (sub) regional seas meet the Aichi target of 10% cover in both coastal and offshore waters (GNKE & W. Med.)
• Natura 2000 coverage represents 2/3 of the EU MPA network
• MPAs cover 5.9 % of EU marine areas. If EU MS are to meet the Aichi target 11 (10% cover) 230 000 km2 still needs to be designated by 2020
• Member States have designated more sites since 2012

Next steps...
• Discuss the roadmap more broadly with EU marine stakeholders (DG ENV, DG MARE, ICES, RSCs, JRC)
• Identify resource and capacity needs for each activity & product for regular planning purposes
• The roadmap provides guidance for planning operations and an input to regular strategic discussions (e.g. refit process, EEA’s SOER2020)
• EEA’s contribution on mapping MPAs and developing a method for assessing the ecological coherence of EU MPA networks
• There is a need for region-wide spatial data and to make it available to stakeholders
• 2021 Maritime Spatials Plans – EEA’s role to be further assessed in connection with DG MARE’s report on progress of MSP Directive implementation (e.g. EEA’s role supporting status and pressures assessment similar to WFD process)
