Dear Parents,
We are now into the last half term of the academic
year. I cannot believe how quickly the year has flown
by. Please keep an eye out for all of the events we have
booked for this half term - both letters that come home
and on the website. It is always lovely to see parents
attending the events we have and to celebrate all of the
fantastic work that the children continue to produce.
Please remember that if you have any issues at all you
can always pop into the school office to see me, email
or phone to arrange an appointment.
Staffing:
It is my great pleasure to tell you that Mr. Crosby and
Mrs. Gardner will become permanent Assistant
Headteachers at Beechwood as from 1st September.
Mr. Crosby will continue to lead on Learning and
Assessment and Mrs. Gardner will lead on Inclusion as
they have done for a number of years but they are
taking on this added role as we continue to move the
school forward.
Best wishes,
Mrs. Marsh
Headteacher

Parking
Can I please ask parents to be mindful of the residents around the
school. I have had a number of complaints regarding residents not
being able to access their homes due to inconsiderate parking or
stopping at the beginning and end of the day. One particular car, a
blue Range Rover - has been causing particular concerns for
residents. Please can I ask that you are respectful towards the
residents of the local area.

T he sun shone for the sports
committee on the day they
organised the whole school
basketball competition. Classes split
into 5 teams to play each other and
whilst the committee did agree that
some things could have gone better,
on the whole everything went to
plan.
Each team played at least one game,
with the Super California's and the
MBA Masters being the year group
winners in Year 3 and Year 4 with
MBA taking overall 1st place.
For the upper school the year group
winners were 5B team A and 6T
Team C, the final Year 5 v Year 6
game turned out to be a draw and so
went to penalties… three times with
the eventual Year 5s winning by one
basket!
Very well done to the Sports
Committee, they did an excellent job
in overcoming the problems on the
day and achieved what they set out
to do—running a whole school
competition.

O n Thursday the 26th May, parents
and grand parents joined their
children in singing and dancing at the
WWII Tea Dance. Everyone was swinging
in motion until a Billeting Officer came
bursting in and announced that the
children must evacuate. The children said
their goodbyes as they left the hall and
set off on an evacuation journey. They all
boarded the train and the evacuation
‘experience’ had begun. However, to their
surprise the host families weren't ready
and able to look after so many children
and on top of that the rail track had been
annihilated by German bombs. Due to
this, the train terminated and the children
had to sleep over night at the school. When they returned they were all assigned
their jobs for the next day. Then they all ate their dinner before setting up camp for
the evening. Air raids and gunshots were the least of their worries as an intruder
had entered: slamming doors, dropping ‘ID’ German notes and destroying displays.
The Nazis weren't found and fortunately caused no harm. After school patrol, the
children had to make
breakfast; just bread
— because it was
quick and simple.

France Residential 2016
O n the 6th June, 2016, 27 of Year 5 and year
6 woke up on a bright and early morning to
board a ferry to go to France. It was a long and
tiring journey but we were given lots of sweets
and a massive bottle of popcorn. After four hours
we arrived in Normandy, France.
After a two hour coach trip to Asnelles, we
arrived at the Les Tourelles hotel which is near
the beach. We all settled into the hotel and then
went to the beach. Afterwards we had dinner and
went to bed.
The next day, we visited the D-Day museum
where we looked at all the exhibits and watched a
short film about the building of Mulberry
Harbour. There were lots of little models of the
building and the harbour. Afterwards, we walked
up a steep hill and ate our lunch on the grass.
Then, we went to the Arromanches 360 degrees
cinema where there were nine screens all
showing different clips. The film was very
powerful and emotional. Lastly we went to the
American cemetery where there were thousands
of graves displaying crucifixes and Jewish stars. It
was emotional to see all of the graves of the
fallen soldiers; some of them were only
seventeen.
We then had a nice trip back to the hotel and
enjoyed an hour of swimming in the blue pool.
Afterwards we had dinner of chicken and chips.

O n Wednesday we started the morning
with the Bayeux market - there were so
many stalls full of wonderful things. It didn't take
long for all of us to crowd around the sweet
stall. Other popular items included hats and
jewellery.
After that, we went to see the Bayeux tapestry.
It had over fifty panels that told the story of
William the Conqueror - it had wonderful detail
and the whole story was explained through
headsets.
On this day we also visited the British cemetery
which was especially moving because each
headstone had a personal message. Back at the
hotel we danced at a disco and ate snacks.
On our last day of exploring we visited Juno
Beach and the Canadian centre; the beach was
beautifully sandy and especially amazing
because it was where allied forces first set foot
on French soil. Tragically, it was also where
many soldiers were either wounded or killed.
Back at Tourelles de Vacances, we had a further
swimming session and as a surprise, we were
invited to a French school's party. We did try to
speak a little French and they attempted some
English.
We all rose early the following morning in order
to catch the ferry home.

If there is anyone who would like to feed the chickens over a weekend or
during the summer holidays could you
email Mrs. Marsh at
or telephone the school to let us know
when you would like to do this.
Mr. Marsh will be able to go through
the procedures with you, which are
very easy, and you get to keep the
eggs the chickens lay.
Raising Money for UNICEF
Pupil/parents/staff/visitors raised £104.48 for
UNICEF by having a collection bottle in
reception for loose change. Pupils gave up
their 20p toast money and some gave their
pocket money to give to the collection !
