WASH services is a new and innovative approach.
ii. Wash Store: It will be a supply back up facility connected with production
unit (and with a network of product/ material suppliers). One of the
expected outputs is to maintain inventory for the latrines and other
sanitary products in the region.

various low cost products which are usually not available locally or are in
high demand pertaining to Sanitation. This wing will also provide technical
guidance and supervision during works.
iv. Helpline: It will be a guidance facility linked with telephone (toll free
number) to act as link source for the demand side queries/needs for
WASH-N products and services. It will provide reliable information on
products, services and dependable technical guidance/options.

eeds Innovations From the inception, EEDS is proactively involved in promoting innovations in WASH
sector. The emphasis is on the applied research for the strengthening field
implementation of inclusive sanitation.
a. On site capacity building Approach in WASH -PAN IN THE VAN
With the financial support of UNICEF, EEDS invented a new approach to
strengthen behavior change communication, local institutional building and pre
and post triggering interventions for sustainability of WASH program in
community and Schools. It constitutes of mobile vehicle equipped with basket of
12 tools, community friendly training material, various toilet models and onsite
demonstration of the production of items related to the rural toilets. This unit is
equipped with comprehensive training cum demonstration facility. The resource
persons accompanied with the mobile van are well trained to undertake
awareness, mobilization, participatory trainings, conduct survey and preparation
of action plans. The unit is stays for 3-5 days in a panchayats and conducts
several events. This creates opportunity of involving whole community in different
types of activities including recreational games as per their interest and
19
eeds convenience. This intensive engagement not only builds environment but sets up
the pace for sanitation promotion due to enhanced sensitivity of people. Efforts
are still on to promote this approach on large scale and further advocate with
national and state government to scale this approach.
b. Development of design and Construction of Model School Toilets:
EEDS with financial support from UNICEF, developed new designs and
constructed model school toilet blocks in 30 schools in Guna district, Madhya
Pradesh. These designs are evolved based on participatory process involving
teachers, children, GP and community.
c. Child Friendly Schools and WASH -Dining Shed for Mid day Meal:
Right to Education Act (RTE), Government of India has endorsed that the Mid day
meals in school to be served in a hygienic and dignified way. Keeping the same in
mind EEDS has constructed dining sheds for mid-day meals with proper hand
wash units and solid /liquid waste disposal facilities in 10 schools with the support
of UNICEF and Zila Panchayat in Guna.
d. Design of a New Model of EEDS Prefab Toilets (EEDS ke Teiyar Shouchalaya):
A new model of toilet known as “EEDS
prefab toilets (EEDS ke Taiyar
Shouchalaya)” using light weight
concrete composites has been designed
and developed for low cost
decentralized production by self
mobilization of resources.
e. Design development of Micro-concrete Pans and Machinery:
Based on the feedback of the action research the
improvement in the Micro-concrete Prefab
Sanitary Pan (change in the Process & Machines)
was done. The dissemination of the product
information particularly the Quality aspects was
made at national and international levels with the
support of Building Materials & Technology
20
eeds Promotion Council, Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation, and
Government of India.
f. Design and Development of Eco-san Pans (2008-09):
EEDS has designed and developed five designs
of Eco-san Pans for Decentralized Production for
Entrepreneurship with the support of Stockholm
Environment Institute (SEI) and UNICEF New
Delhi.
o Three Hole Squatting Ecosan Pan (pre-cast micro concrete)
o Two Hole Squatting Ecosan Pan (pre-cast micro concrete)
o Western Type Two Hole Ecosan Pan (using FRP)
o Western Type Three Hole Ecosan Pan (using FRP)
o Indian Type Two Hole Ecosan Pan (pre-cast micro concrete)
For demonstration purpose one eco friendly toilet (ECOSAN) is
constructed in Guna district.
g. Magic Stick for Toilet Construction:
EEDS has designed a special stick of (appraox. 1 meter) which has marked with all
the dimensions to be used a standards toilet construction. This is very useful for
the masons in rural parts to follow the correct sizes/ dimensions.
