The Memory Project 2011 – Ms. R MillhouseThis club has a simple concept but with a far-reaching impact. Our students applied for andreceived photographs of orphan children. In 2011 the photos came to us from anorphanage in Mexico. Each student then created a portrait drawing from the photograph. They spent on average ten hours crafting a life-like drawing for their child. Many chose toadd a background that would add some color and character. The smiles on the kids facessay it all! In 2012 we will be working with children from Honduras.

AssembliesSpellman Auditorium. Wednesday, 2PM:

"Where do you go?" "Assembly..." Yes, assembly.Presenting a rare opportunity for the EFIApopulation to meet after an exhausting day ofshortened but intense classes, the weeklyassemblies feature enthusiastic introductions by Dr.Mahoney ("WiFi!"), musical performances by Tamaka Bruno Mars and his crew, Mr. Lupo and Ms. Yoo,Amnesty International presentations, awards for thebest/most improved students (with the winnersusually not being present) and introduce Mr.Hodgkinson rising up to be EFIA's NextSuperteacher while making a flaming exit (hereceived 8 friend requests that night)... and so forth. It has since been an integral part of our school life. While those who attend it want to desperately runaway, those who do so are actually missing out ona lot of surprises. What makes it even better: It hasbecome much shorter! Interesting Fact: The idea ofassemblies was first introduced by Dr. Trew herselfin her quest of establishing what would hopefully bea school tradition. And they became one for sure.

"Just the way you are." Exactly.

Boston TripAs a New Yorker, I bleed pinstripes. I also avoid thecity of Boston. So, on that afternoon as water gusheddown the second floor boys’ stairwell as though wewere reliving Titanic itself, Dr. Mahoney calmly said,”Let’s go to Boston.”Four days and countless trips to Quincy Market later,we were taking a boat trip about the city of Boston.Mr. Dunn and I were watching the New York FootballGiants were pouncing on the New England Patriots.I was silently cheering, as the water looked frigid andI didn’t want anyone to throw me overboard. After atriumphant victory, I walked inside and stood next toDr. Trew. You were all on the dance floor below, singing anddancing along to Rihanna’s “We Fell In Love.”Dr. Trew looked said, “Tonight’s the night.”Nothing would be the same after this. We were aunit, bound by water and dirty clothes. Our sportsalliances didn’t matter, nor did our mutual desire forNew York, our home. We had fallen in love in ahopeless place. - Ms. Lauren Raia

Dedication to Grease

G

Why Grease? After seeing many directing and watchingmany high school musicals over the years, I wanted tochoose a show that our young people from all over the world could respond to. As the one of the most successful movie musicals in history, I thought that there was a chance many of them had some previous knowledge or background of the story, or at least their parents did! Also, there is a large cast, with the opportunity to add ensemble parts, and they were evenly distributed between male and female roles. In addition, they were “cool” which students from all over the world could identify with. As I said in my director’s note for the program:

Theatre is a collaborative art. Many of our talentedteachers stepped forward to offer their assistance. Whatmade is possible was our excellent creative team of fellowteachers: Ms.Beerman (Science), our choreographer, Mr.Kwabi (Math) as musical director, and Mr. Lupo (ESL), asBand Director. In addition, Dr. Pohland (German) offered tosew our costumes and Tim Barnes (History) helped withsome of the initial set construction.

Page 51: EF International Academy New York - 2012 Yearbook

Theater can be a unifying experience for all, creating a sense of “family”due to the intense hours of rehearsals, commitment, emotionalinvestment, all extra-curricular. This is especially important in our school,I believe, because we are a boarding school and our students do not gohome to their own families every day. Teacher participation in studentlife outside of the classroom helps to strengthen the sense of communitywithin our school and build lasting bonds. It was a great success usingsome of our teachers for the first time last year in ourproduction of The Laramie Project so I decided thatthe two adult roles in Grease should be played by ourtalented teachers as well.

I want to thank all the student cast and crew, faculty members, along with our first ILSpartnership, who devoted so much time andenergy into creating EF International Academy’sfirst musical – a true collaboration! We hope youenjoyed the fun-loving spirit and immortal songsthat make Grease a favorite among rockand roll fans of all ages.

By Ginny Borton

Gratefully, Mr. Knight (History) and Mrs. Walsh(English) happily agreed! The laughter and cheersfrom our student audience helped to validate thischoice.

Grease doesn't have a message ... it gives a flavor of being a teenager in the50s when rock'n'roll and putting grease on your hair were the most importantthings in life. Teenage angst and love's young dream remain timeless anduniversal themes.

As a first year program at EFIA, the Varsity Soccer team spent the year in 'building' mode. In our contests, the teamplayed well, but suffered from a scoring affliction. With capitalization on just a few of the many scoring opportunities, the team, would easily been at .500 for the season. One of the greatest outcomes this season was the sense ofcamaraderie built among the members of the team and our coachign staff. CLASS OF 2012: I know it is a

cliche, but I haveto say:

"WE ARE THEBEST!"

A two-year journeyis soon coming toan end - and it wasquite a journey foreach and everyone of us.

When we firstarrived here atEFIA, we did notknow each othernor did we knowourselves.

Dameli Ushbayeva, KAZHAKSTAN

“The smartest choice I made was coming back toEFIA for my second year after Christmas. Thereis nothing like a school with homework in everysubject every day, strict teachers, and too smartstudents, and a campus with thousand rules, terrible food and curfew hours. The teachers, thefood, the rules and the joy among the students iswhat made my high school years perfect.”

Margrethe Dammann, NORWAY

“Crazy, amazing moments, happening nowherebut here in EFIA.I am glad to meet all you guyshere and one thing I have to say: You all gave methe most remarkable life, I love you =) ”

“I have been studying in EFIA for 3 years long. WhenI first arrived here, I hardly imagined how tough IBwould be. Indeed, through many challenging IBcourses, I have grown up knowledgeably and madeso many international friends who support meunfailingly. I hope everyone will be accomplished inthe bright future. This is my remarkable year, I willalways keep it in my memory. Thanks to IB, myfriends and all the dedicated teachers here, I amproud to say that I am well-built enough to go tocollege and to challenge everything. I will be backhere someday.” Jackson Nguyen, VIETNAM

"Two years have passed since we first entered.Everyone nervous and excited about what wewere about to embark on. And now being at theend of this journey, I can look back at everythingI have done here, all the friends I’ve made, all thelaughs and all the disappointments we’ve allshared together, and be glad. However, life goeson and so are we, and soon, we will leave to thesame place as from we came, all around theworld. We will meet new people and make newmemories, but what I’ve lived through here withall of you, is something I will never forget"

Josef Ghanima, NORWAY

“There are memories that cling on to my brain for along time. The ones that make me time-travel to themoment over and over in day-dreaming. Althoughonly one year, I am already sure that the days Ishared with friends, the growing up, and thelaughter at late night hallway talks at my home EFwill be greatly missed. Hopefully someday, I willcome back to this campus after achieving my dreamof being an engineer. I will remember you EF,remember me.” Yay Shin, SOUTH KOREA

“The greatest pleasure in life is doing what peoplesay you cannot do.” “Walter BagehotFiguratively and literally, Mr. Bagehot.“IB” wasnothing compared to getting our fridge through thewindow. At last, if I had met half of all the greatpeople I’ve met here during my entire lifetime, itwould have been enough.Break a leg!(not you Norwegians..)” Mimmi Lindquist, SWEDEN

“Coming to study here, in America and particularlythis school was probably one of the most importantdecisions in my life. Only staying here in a diversecommunity made me learn more than I couldpossibly learn at classes. After 2 years of studyinghere I have a lot of moments and stories toremember and to share with my friends and family. It was great unforgettable experience to studyhere. I am happy I graduate from EFIA!”

Anzhelika Minina, RUSSIA

“Three years at EFIA New York are coming to anend. But actually it was just a coincidence that Icame to Tarrytown. My plan was to stay for only oneyear somewhere in California. I am happy to stayhere for this long time. During this time I made verygood friends and certainly I liked to live one houraway from Manhattan. Therefore it was anunbelievable experience and something I willsuggest to everyone I meet in my life. During thistime I build a strong character, become more self-confident and independent from my family.Certainly I gained a lot of academic knowledge formy future in Switzerland. I left my home to create asecond one in New York! Hope to see some of youand my friends once again... Alles Gute für dieZukunft!!!” Philipp Ahlbrand, GERMANY

“It was such a wonderful journey...I can't believe thatI'm done with it! There were many things happenedunbelievably during these two years in this school!Sometimes, I have done things which areunconsciously simply because of the IBrequirement. Although I've been through badexperience and memories, what can I say about it?It's life! I believe that everything will be better in thefuture when I do my best. "Trust in the Lord with allyour heart and lean not on your own understanding;in all your ways submit to him, and he will make yourpaths straight." – Proverbs. Finally, I hope everyonecan be successful and be blessed in the future!”

From Seniors with Love... II

“These two years of EFIA experience taught me oneparticular thing - to act independently and beresponsible for my own actions. We live here, onanother part of the world, kilometers away from ourfamilies not to disappoint them, but make them seewho we truly are in this world.I dream of doingsomething significant in this world, to accomplishsomething important. I do not have a step-by-stepplan yet, but I certainly know that once I discover mytrue potential, I will have this plan.”

And I am happy that I havebeen part of the student voice in this young school, and I hope this voice will get louder as years passby. This is IT. It has been cool, sorrowful; sunny-funny; nice-vice; ugly-snugly; graceful-painful . . .and happy-chappy and crazy-lazy for sure . . . "

"Greeted by the golden dome of Butler Hall, majestically looking down from the top of the hillsthe first time I arrived on camous, I knew the nexttwo years were going to be life-changing. Dedication“To IB or not to IB – that is the question.” And for sure, itwas a question for many of us Seniors this year. Thesepast months have been months of struggles anduncertainty - but most of all, they are the last months ofour time here at EFIA. It was a time of discovery, of newchallenges; of friendships forged across all culturalbarriers that will last for life.

Back then, they created the schoolfrom scratch - and having thechance to contribute to thisdevelopment as a student issomething that we hope will inspirefuture generations as well.We are many kinds of students: theambitious ones, the lazy ones, theprocrastinating ones. Howeverexhausting it might seem at times –in the end, all that is left are thegood memories. No matter wherethe future might lead all of us; wewish you all the best and thank youfor your patience, time anddedication you have put into theschool and us. Thank you, Dr. Trew.

Among those who have made this experience possibleis Dr. Claudia Trew, who co-founded EF InternationalAcademy New York along with Gary Julian.

The EFIA Graduating Class of 2012

written byChindalay Phonsavath

"As we come from different places, we leave todifferent places."

No matter for how long we have been here, wherewe came from; we have all gathered the courageto take risks, to open up our minds, explore theworld, gain new perspectives. Leaving this placebehind, we might never see each other again. But as much as we will miss EFIA, we are lookingforward to our future, without any regrets. As a Senior from last year said:

Thank you to our Counselors who have guided us not only in our universityapplication process, but also become our support and strength in our lives.You. Are. Incredible.

EFIA has become our home and the people we have met here our family. No matter how long we have been here, no matter if High School Diploma,IB Diploma or both - it was an exciting and emotional journey for all of us.Smiles were exchanged (and so were homeworks). Lives and rooms wereshared. Tears were shed, loved ones missed. But in all those times, we werenever alone. We had our new family.

Thank you to our behind-the-scenes magicians, especiallyAdele, Cindy and Denise - you know we love you!

Thank you to our teachers for their patience, their mercyand their love for teaching. You rock!

Last but not least, we would also like to thank Dr. Mahoneyfor making our last year as special as possible.
