  • 1. Strengthen your relationship with God

Faith does not stay at one level. Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, may Allah have mercy upon him, said, “Iman is speech and action. It increases and decreases. If you perform good deeds, it increases, and if you do wrong, it decreases.”

At a time when there is so much pressure and stress on Muslims, we need to draw strength from our enhanced relationship with the Creator.

While some might need clinical assistance for mental illness, all can benefit from a praying connection with our Lord. Sabr (patience) and Salat (prayer) are two methods Allah has given us to achieve a better relationship with Him (Quran 2:45).

There are many ways to strengthen our connection to Him this year. These include:

Improving the quantity of our five daily prayers

making Dua for things both big and small

Making more frequent and larger charitable donations

    Reconnecting with the Quran

Identifying and working on dropping one bad habit

    2. Take care of your health

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “A strong believer is better than a weak believer” (Muslim). This does not just apply to spirituality, but to our physical state as well. He also said, “There are two blessings which many people waste: health and free time” (Bukhari).

Commit to exercising more, even if that is parking your car further so you walk more. Or choose other simple ways to get some exercise in to build a stronger health. Take care of any health issues you may have been neglecting and make an appointment for that annual physical to make sure you are in top shape.

    3. Make calls. Many.

In December 2018, the U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of House Resolution 1091, a bipartisan measure that declares the Burmese military atrocities against the Rohingya Muslim minority genocide.

This was passed with the help of Americans across the country doing one thing: Making a phone call. With the guidance and encouragement of Burma Task Force, which issues regular action alerts, supporters called their elected representatives to vote in favor of this resolution.

We are blessed to live in a democracy, as flawed as it may be. We are blessed to be able to have a say in what policies affect not just us, but others around the world. And all it takes is a phone call. In 2019, resolve to take this small step that has long-term, positive repercussions for you, your family, and others around the world.

    4. Revive your marriage

The divorce rate among Muslims in North America has risen sharply over the last 25 years. It is clear that we need to work harder on building lasting and satisfying unions that reflect the Islamic ideal, not cultural norms that may be unfair to either spouse.

In 2019, if you are married, commit to building a stronger partnership, one that reflects the ideal marital relationship of Rahma (mercy) and Muwadda (love) as described in the Quran (30:21).

Whether that means attending couples and/or individual counseling, apologizing for past mistakes and making amends, or just planning date nights where you and your better half enjoy time away from children and other responsibilities on a regular basis, make an effort to strengthen your bond with your spouse.

    5. Help someone else get married

    Samana Siddiqi | SoundVision.com

10 things every Muslim must do in 2019

  • 5

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, described marriage as “half of faith”. While most Muslims are serious about finding a life partner, they are having a harder time finding a spouse for a variety of reasons.

For some, matchmaking websites offer a solution. But for many, it’s still trusted family and friends they feel most comfortable with to introduce them to their potential better half.

It doesn’t call for opening up your own marriage bureau (although you can always direct someone to one if they’re interested). All it requires is for you to consider it your personal responsibility, especially if you yourself are married, and even more so if you are happily married. After all, shouldn’t we love for our brother/sister what we love for ourselves? Also, as a married person, you’ve got a pool of potential candidates via your spouse that can match up with your own friends. If the process is done with dignity and discretion and results in marriage, not only will you help someone settle down in life, but you’ll reap its spiritual benefits as well.

    6. Choose a candidate to volunteer for in 2020

If you are unhappy about the state of our government, the time to start working on this is not 2020 but a full year ahead of that. It will take a tremendous amount of time, money, and effort to turn this around because the chances of a different party taking the helm at this writing are slim. Find a candidate you feel best represents your interests and needs and book an appointment to meet them in person. State why you support them and ask how you can help their campaign.

    7. Reach out to your neighbors

Reaching out is not just about Masjid open houses and interfaith dialog groups. It happens in so many casual encounters, we often miss the opportunities: During a child’s softball practice while cheering with other parents; at the grocery store checkout line; while being part of a sports team or exercise class; on the daily bus or train ride to work; in the school cafeteria sharing a meal with peers. Daily or at least weekly, find ways to reach out to your neighbors, coworkers, classmates,

    friends and strangers.

This is even more important in 2019, at a time when America is polarized at alarming levels based on politics and other markers.

    8. Reconnect with a Masjid

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There are seven (types of people) whom Allah will protect with His Shade, on the Day (of Resurrection) when there will be no shade except His Shade.” Of those mentioned was, “A person whose heart is attached to the Masjid” (Bukhari).

If your local Masjid is not a welcoming place because of the exclusion of women, ethnic bias, lack of transparency, or other issues, resolve to find a new one. If you cannot, for now, focus only on fortifying your faith and connection to Allah. Attend Juma prayers, make sure to pray the extra prayers offered upon entering the Masjid (Tahiyyatul Masjid) and if you’re nearby during the weekdays, try to catch the congregational prayer there.

There is power in a place dedicated to the worship of God which is simply absent when you pray in your cubicle at work, a stairwell in the corner of a school hallway, and even at home.

    9. Solidify your financial position

Muslims are more likely than other Americans to be underemployed, according to a 2016 Pew Research Center portrait of the community.

Overall, 29% of Muslims are underemployed, in that they are either employed part time but would prefer full-time work (10%), or they are not employed but they are looking for work (18%). By comparison, 12% of U.S. adults overall are underemployed in these ways.

Keeping in mind that Allah is the Provider (Al-Razzaq), we should start off 2019 by making a deep, sincere Dua asking God to increase your earnings in a Halal way. That can mean different things. It can translate into taking on a second job in your spare time or encouraging your older children to look for work, especially in the summer. On a larger level, it can include starting your dream business or even working with an existing one to strengthen it with your

skills and talent, if not your capital.

If you’re still in school, carefully consider your career path. While it’s important to be passionate about what you do, a certain level of financial security is important for everyone to reach their potential in life. Research expanding career options, like green and sustainable development in all sectors, which big corporations are also seeking to fill with qualified personnel. Then see if you can marry your passion with a solid profession.

Remember that making more money also raises your ability and responsibility to give more to good causes, and help those who need it, be it family, friends, or neighbors.

    10. Volunteer with family and friends

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The best of people are those that bring most benefit to the rest of mankind.” (Daraqutni).

Bringing benefit to others is of course not restricted to monetary charity. Countless volunteer organizations help people meet all kinds of needs, be it job training, food, diapers, tutoring, and more.

In 2019, resolve to join the ranks of the 25 percent of Americans who volunteer, if you already don’t. Even more important, volunteer with family and friends, encouraging them to give back and benefit others as well.

    Conclusion:

Whatever you decide to do in 2019, do seriously plan for it, instead of just taking it lightly as a “new year wish.” You know yourself better, so think and plan. Sound Vision has many online guides available for evaluating yourself and planning for the future. As you sit down for planning, do include the whole family in the process. Thinking together is barakah. Also review our advice for 2018, 2017, or 2016. maybe you will find something useful in those ideas which you can incorporate in 2019’s plan.

May God bless you with wisdom, thoughtful planning, and a blissful 2019 full of productivity.

How to Heal from Your Rift With Allah(swt)Life has it’s challenges. They come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes it pours when it rains, and all these challenges from your tests can take you to all kinds of wild places.

Some of these places are dark- filled with doubts, anger, despair and negative emotions. These gloomy moments can leave you feeling weak, powerless, scared, and betrayed. Hard times can corrode your faith. You might feel like you’re losing your faith in Allah(swt).

Anyone who strove to get close to Allah(swt) and were able to connect with Him on a deep, personal level dreads any shift in that connection that threatens to take her away from Allah(swt)- even in the tiniest bit.

Yet, it happens. It happens when we’re overwhelmed by our tests in loss of health, wealth, dream, relationship etc. or, the uncertainty of them all distresses us too much. Sometimes, you’re so taken aback by a particular challenge that you feel overpowered by it’s force that’d threatened you to your core. Other times, you develop patience and endure what came your way, and then over time all your pain and fear turns into anger and you feel forsaken by God as the waiting game gets to you. You feel like, He too have abandoned you.

Hard times like these can and will occur to any and all Muslim’s life- as mentioned in the Quran. It’s in the forecast, so no escaping it. No one can say they are immune from a challenge like this. But, the longer you simmer your sadness and stay passive about your rift with Allah(swt), the harder it becomes to come back to the deep bond that you once Had, or wish you had with Him.

Of course, Shaitan has it’s part to play in this rift, and so does the person, events, things and beliefs that brought you in this place. But, blaming shaitan

and pointing fingers to your problems is not going to improve your situation. Ruminating on a dilemma only makes things worse for you.

You have to take actions so you can resolve your spiritual conflict, and heal from your fallout with Allah(swt). It’s must learn for every Muslim, so you know how to prevent these events from tearing you away from Allah(swt), and learn how to heal from it if you find yourself in a rift with Allah(swt).

Why do we have a rift?

We tend to put things in 2 boxes when it comes to any event that happens in our lives- a) It feels comfortable and familiar, so it must be good for me b) It feels uncomfortable and unfamiliar, so it must be bad for me. We tend to judge our life events based on that 2 boxed perspectives and react/respond accordingly.

The attitude of- I know what’s best for me. So, when something doesn’t go as planned, you’re mad at Allah, forgetting or denying that He knows what’s best for you and when/how it should occur in your life.

You’re not putting in enough time to develop reliance on Allah(swt).

The habit of listening and giving into your ego.

Allowing yourself to be overpowered by your desire and envy.

Believing that you’re entitled to what you have and act on that belief when something is withheld or taken away from you.

Thinking tests will come at a “later” time, or tests are for other Muslims, not for you.

What you can do to heal from your rift with Allah(swt)-

Strive to become an all weather friend-

Take a long, deep look at your relationship with Allah(swt). Do you act like a fair weather friend a lot of the times? You’re pleased with Him when things are just the way you wanted, but you’re cross and angry when things aren’t? You criticize the events that are not to your liking, and complain when they occur? The alhamudulilahs disappear when you’re faced with discomfort?

These are signs of a fair weather friend who’s with you when you’re having a good time, and runs at any sign of undesirable weather. They are available when things are comfortable but takes off at the first sign of discomfort. If you have these traits, choose to be an all weather friends instead. Choose to remember Allah(swt) at all times. Please your trust in Allah and understand that He’s always with you and you must do the same.

How do you do it? Don’t label your life events as good or bad and say alhamdulillah for all of them.

Understand that looks can be deceiving-

If you have a kid (or were one once) you know Broccoli is good for him. But these super foods are rarely received with the same alacrity as pizza or ice cream. Why? Because broccoli doesn’t taste as good as pizza or ice creams, yet, they are far more nutritious for you. Can you imagine what would’ve happened if we only ate that tasted “good”?

A test may look like undesirable but if you choose to go through it, you might experience pleasant surprises and invaluable lessons that you wouldn’t know otherwise.

So, try not to get hung up when an undesirable thing happens. Look at it

    Farhana / http://simplymuslimmom.com

  • objectively, and try to see why it might be actually good for you. Try to think outside of your pleasure only box, and you’ll see why this might work in your favor. It may be hard to swallow a bitter pill, but a test from Allah(swt) sure can bring you good that you’ve never expected. Learn, turn and move forward with the lesson that you’d learned from the test.

    Put Tawaqqul into practice-

Tawaqqul, or reliance in Allah(swt) is a must have in every Muslims spiritual arsenal. Like any great skill, it takes commitment and diligence to trust that Allah indeed has the best plans for you, and whatever happens- He got your back.

You have to develop this habit of having complete reliance on Allah(swt) by weeding out and removing the doubts and fears. The result? When difficult times roll around your faith remains intact, and you’re able to handle it with clam and grace.

It may feel like you’re giving up control of your life. You may feel like you’re not ready now, or not a strong enough believer yet. But, to gain tawaqqul, trusting Allah(swt) completely must be done. Allah’s plan may seem confusing, unconventional, or mysterious at times, especially when you are facing difficulty. But, He’ll take care of you no matter what. And, as tawaqqul becomes a habit, you’ll see how Allah”s plan is revealed to you. You will be able to better understand how to overcome the obstacles in your way,

Choose to say alhamdulillah on the on-sight of a minor test, and you’ll be able to remain cool in midst of a major test, inshaAllah.

    Surround yourself with resilient Muslims-

You become who you surround yourself with.

When we spend too much time in a secularized society, shaitan can weaken and penetrate our spiritual walls. One great way to eliminate this struggle is to find positive, righteous Muslims, and become friends with them. Find and join events at your local masjid. You can organize charitable events, Islamic social events like book clubs, sewing bees,

bake sales, clothing swaps, etc. so you get to meet other Muslims who share your challenges.

Other Muslims who are overcoming their own challenges can lift you up in spirit, remind you to become steadfast in your faith, and cheer you on as you strive to make a stronger bond with Allah(swt). They can advice you on how they turned to Allah()swt) in times of their trials and what helped them.

Stick to your salah and improve them-

When you’re mad at Allah(swt), the first thing that goes out the window is your salah. First goes the focus, then the intention, and then inevitably, you start missing prayers here and there.

Improving your sub-par prayers are a great way to heal from your disconnections from Allah(swt).

Prayer is the best way to communicate one-on-one with God. He gave us this tool so we would never feel alone. You can speak to Allah(swt) about the obstacles in your life in a safe, non judgmental place. Share with Him-your fears and worries and ask for His guidance.

So, make yourself a promise to NEVER give up your prayer-no matter what. Consider your prayers are like like breathing- your lifeline. Don’t stop, don’t give up, even if you’re just going through the motions and your heart is else where.

    Just do it.

Here’s how to improve your salah.

    Understand your status with Allah(swt)-

Your tests commensurate with the level of your piety.

Your tests are great ways to achieving higher spiritual status if you’ve been inspired by the lives of our prophets(as) and their companions, and were seeking a similar level of connections with Allah(swt). So, when you find yourself riddled with multiple tests, or an especially challenging trial- know that your hope to get closer to Allah(swt) got noticed, and you’ve been presented with the opportunity to get promoted to a higher status with Allah(swt).

You must act decisively now, so you can strengthen your Iman through your test/s. If you find it hard and struggling with it, look for strength in the seerah of the Prophets(as), their family members, and companions of the Prophet Muhammad(sa). There’s hardly anything left that they didn’t have to endure- from acute hunger to cruel persecution loss of a child.

Let your tests become a cue to become a stronger, more grateful Muslim. Choose to be impervious to pain, learn to be comfortable to unfortable. Find your favorite Muslim- who you find inspiring, and start emulating her/him in your words and actions. Eventually, you’ll find yourself much stronger inshaAllah.

    Increase your remembrance of Allah-

Make time for reading Quran and doing dhikr. Too busy to do them? Cue it with a current habit so you can instill the habit. For example, read 1 ayah of Quran before touching your phone in the morning. Or, come up with 5 glorious attributions of Allah(swt) and do 7 times of dhikr on them at each prayer.

Once both habits kick in, add more ayat and increase the number on dhikr.

To actually get them done, you must be deliberate about them. if you blame not doing them on the same excuse more than once, you’ve to sit with yourself and work on your intention.

Don’t forget to pat your back and get yourself a small, joyful reward.

No matter what problem is in the way between you and Allah(swt), He’s right there for you- walking you through each step. Sometimes we’re too deep into our emotion or too wrapped up in our pain to even see that He never leaves our side. He has the ability and the mercy to make us successful after each test. All you have to do is to not let anything, any challenge to come between you and your God. And if/when a challenge threatens you take you away from the One who loves you most, you come back as fast and as soon as you can.

Be in peace, heal your rift with Allah(swt), inshaAllah.
