Coaching: What it is

‘Coaching’ Defined –“Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” (ICF)

Wellness Coaching Defined: –“Certified Health and Wellness Coaches are professionals from diverse backgrounds and education who work with individuals and groups in a client-centered process to facilitate and empower the client to achieve self-determined goals related to health and wellness. Successful coaching takes place when coaches apply clearly defined knowledge and skills so that clients mobilize internal strengths and external resources for sustainable change.” (Michael Arlonski)

Coaching: Unique Aspects and Advantages

Coaching is ancient: –Socratic dialogue indicates Socrates was the first coach –A questioning style designed to examine self-awareness and discover their own truth in the process

(Jones and Gorell, 2012)

How is coaching different? Listening Questioning Feedback

Why Coaching? Advantages and Challenges

What coaching offers that traditional counseling and behavior change approaches do not: Coaching provides a positive connection and supportive relationship Coaching empowers the client to draw on own innate ability to make lasting change

Specific challenges of coaching: Must become a ‘Jedi Master’ of listening, questioning and feedback! Who is responsible for what? Gain buy-in around self-responsibility for change

Case Study

Coaching Tool: Positive Problem-Solving (Reframing) (Adapted from 50 Top Tools for Coaching, p .89, Jones and Gorell, 2012)

–When a client has a goal to achieve, success can often be impeded by a block of some sort.

–This tool is designed to help clients find this block on their own and become more positive and solution oriented

Case Study #1 (cont’d) Best for clients who:

–Appear stuck: focusing on the problem and not generating solutions

–Have a goal that’s tangible but that hasn’t been defined

Advice for using: –Make sure clients know that a short time will be spent on the problem and the focus is on solutions

–As the coach, focus on changing energy of the client when discussing problems vs. solutions

(Adapted from Jones and Gorell, 2012)

Case Study #1 (cont’d)

Problem Frame

What is the problem?

How long has this problem been a problem?

What is the worst thing about this problem?

What has stopped you so far from solving this problem?

(Adapted from Jones and Gorell, 2012)

Outcome Frame

What outcome do you want?

How will you know when you've achieved the outcome?

What potential solutions can you think of?

How can you obtain any additional resources you need?

Coffee-Break Coaching (cont’d) When to use:

–When clients say “I don’t know what to do about…” –Whenever you are in a situation—group or one-on-one—when this

question arises

Helpful in getting clients to see the responsibility they need to take and quickly identify something they can do about the problem Brief Process:

–Describe current issue or problem –Ask clients to describe outcome –List obstacles –Brainstorm solutions together –Rate solutions –Agree on an approach

(Adapted from Jones and Gorell, 2012)
