Infrastructure MATERIALS ENGINEERING BRANCH Standard No.: MEB-P053 Effective Date Current: March 2020 Previous: None Page 1 of 16 Standard Practice for: Rating Segregated areas on Bituminous Pavement 1.0 SCOPE This Standard Practice outlines the process to rate segregated areas on bituminous pavement. 2.0 REFERENCE STANDARDS NCHRP Report 441 Segregation in Hot-Mix Asphalt Pavements Alberta Ministry of Transportation Segregation Rating Manual 3.0 DEFINITIONS Segregation: A condition of an asphalt pavement characterized by areas with comparatively coarser or finer texture than that of the surrounding pavement. Slight Segregation: The matrix, asphalt cement and fine aggregate is in place between the coarse aggregate. However, there is more stone in comparison to the surrounding acceptable mix. Moderate Segregation: Significantly more stone than the surrounding mix; moderately segregated areas usually exhibit a lack of surrounding matrix. Severe Segregation: Appears as an area of very stony mix, stone against stone, with very little or no matrix. Paver Streak: Appears as a continuous or semi-continuous longitudinal "streak" located within the paver "mat”. 4.0 GENERAL The Standard is intended to promote uniform interpretation leading to fair and consistent rating of segregated areas. Reference photos are provided to help classify the severity of pavement segregation and identify paver streak.

Standard Practice for: Rating Segregated areas on Bituminous Pavement 5.0 PROCEDURE The bituminous pavement shall be marked with brackets on both sides of the segregated area, labeled in the centre with a level of severity and recorded in the Inspector’s field book. The labeling for types of segregations are as follows:
