How Alkalinity Aects NitrificationUse alkalinity profiling in wastewater operations to control biological activity and optimize process control
BY MARY EVANS AND GARY SOBER
“In addition, nitrification is pH-sensitive and rates of nitrification will decline significantly at pH values below 6.8. Therefore, itis important to maintain anadequate alkalinity in the aerationtank to provide pH stability andalso to provide inorganic carbon for nitrifiers.”
“When measuring total alkalinity, the endpoint reflects how muchalkalinity would be available at a pH of 4.5. At higher pH valuesof 7.0 to 7.4 SU, where wastewateroperations are typically conducted, not all alkalinity measured to a pHof 4.5 is available for use. Thisis a critical distinction for the bioavailability of alkalinity.”
“operation of a biological processdepends on steady-state conditions”
“alkalinity is the key to steady-state operations.”
“sufficient amount of alkalinity canprovide for improved performanceand expanded treatment capacity”
