EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In this project we looked at four different ways that Effective Study Skills can be used. We

have looked at SQ3R, Stress Management, Time Management and learning difficulties , For all

of these headings we have wrote up and explained what they are.

We interviewed Rosian Kelly from the Resource Centre in AIT, she gave us some great answer

that we didn't know at the time but now we do. you can listen to our interview on our blog that

we have created a link to below

This project shows the different types of people how to study or even how to overcome

different obstacles that may occur when they are studying such as people with learning

disabilities.

3) INTRODUCTION

“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from

failure.”—Colin Powell

In this project we will discuss the various different and most effective ways of studying. There are

various techniques for studying and we aim to provide the reader with information on these techniques

and how to apply them. This project is designed to inform and help the reader to develop effective study

skills.

Study skills are approaches applied to learning. They are generally critical to success in school,

considered essential for acquiring good grades, and useful for learning throughout one's life. Study skills

can be described as ‘learning how to become an effective learner and how to manage your own

learning’. There is no minimum age to start learning these skills. In fact, just like learning a language, the

earlier the learners are introduced to these skills and strategies, and apply them, the more independent

and confident they will become in any learning situation, both within and outside the classroom.

4) LITERATURE REVIEW

Time Management Skills In this section, I will be discussing the importance of time management skills when it comes to

effective study skills. Time management is the process of planning and managing the control

over the specific amount of time spent on various activities, by using a range of skills, tools and

techniques in order to accomplish certain tasks and goals. Here are a few important tips with

time management to take into consideration when studying;

Tip 1: Make a detailed study schedule/timetable

Rather than determining when to study in your head, it is better to write it down in an organised

study schedule/timetable.Make sure each subject and the due date for each exam is clearly

marked out on your timetable as you will be more likely to follow through with your study plan if

so is done.Making a schedule and sticking to it will allow you to develop a routine that you can

hopefully easily follow. Remember, you will have to revise your study schedule each semester to

accommodate your class schedule and your other changing commitments.

______________________________________________________________________ Page 7

Page 8: Effective studyskills

Tip 2: Blocks and Study Breaks

As your school term begins and your course schedule is set, you should develop a plan of

study time in a typical week. Blocks ideally are around 50 minutes, but you may become

restless after only 30 minutes. Some more difficult material may require more frequent

breaks. Shorten your study blocks if necessarybut don't forget to return to the task at

hand. What you do during your break should give you an opportunity to have a snack,

relax, or otherwise refresh or reenergize yourself.

Tip 3: Prioritize your assignments:

Prioritizing your assignments is a good way to ensure you spend the appropriate amount of time

studying for each class or subject. It is a good idea to devote more time to subjects that are new

to you or subjects in which your grades need to improve. Also, remember to study the harder

subjects first so that you tackle them with a fresh mind. Additionally, you should organize your

studies with important tests or exams in mind. If an exam in one course has been postponed,

modify your study schedule to prioritize more immediate tests and projects. However, don’t

neglect postponed tests altogether; take advantage of the extra time to review material during

short study times each day.

______________________________________________________________________ Page 8

Page 9: Effective studyskills

Tip 4: Stay Organised

Staying organized is critical to avoid wasting valuable time as a college student. Since you will

be enrolled in several classes at a time, it is important that you organize your class and study

materials in a way that makes it easy to access them. Find an organization method that works

for you, such as using a separate binder or folder for each class. Also, when going into a study

session, make sure you have anything you need. You don’t want to interrupt your study session

by searching your room for flash cards or notes.

SQ3R SQ3R is a reading strategy formed from its letters; SURVEY, QUESTION,READ,

RECITE and REVIEW. SQ3R will help you build a framework to understand your reading

assignment.

Survey:

Before you read, make sure you survey the chapter.

Look at the title, headings , and subheadings.

Look at all captions under pictures, charts graphs or maps.

If your review your questions or your teachermade study guide.

Look at the introductory and the concluding paragraphs

______________________________________________________________________ Page 9

Page 10: Effective studyskills

Make sure you summaries

Questions: Question while you are surveying.

You should try turn the title, heading, and / or subheadings into questions

Read questions at the end of each chapter

Ask yourself do you know what you have just revised.

Read: Look for answers to the question you have just made.

Answer all question at end of each chapter

read all the captions under the pictures

reduce your speed for more harder topics

Recite:

Take notes from the text but rewrite them in your own words.

Ask question of what you have just read, don't go any further than what you have

learnt.

Under line it highlight the important things you have just read.

The more senses you use the more likely you are to remember what you read:

Seeing, saying, hearing strength learning: Seeing , saying , hearing, writing!

Review: First retread all your notes

Discuss the material with someone else

Explain what you have learnt

Stress Management Tips for Stress Management around exam time:

1. Manage your Anxiety

2. Have a plan

3. Keep your brain sharp, eat well, sleep well and regular exercise

4. Think positively and visualise success

5. Breathing & relaxation techniques

First recognize stress

Symptoms for stress include mental, social and physical manifestations. They can include

exhaustion, loss of/increased an appetite , headaches, crying and lack of sleep or even over

sleeping.

Stress management is the ability to maintain control when situations, people and

events make excessive demands. What are some strategies?

Look around

See if you can take control and change the thing that is annoying you.

Set realistic goals for yourself.

There is no point setting a goal to high for yourself and failing the goal. Set a goal that your cable

to do.

Remove yourself from the stressful situation.

______________________________________________________________________ Page 11

Page 12: Effective studyskills

Try to remove yourself from a place that cause you stress, take breaks regularly from study if

that is what stressing you.

Don't overwhelm yourself,

Handle each task as it comes, don't take in too much.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

Make sure you prioritize the important things.

Learn how to relax yourself.

Find out what makes you relaxed and you should use this when you find yourself stressed.

Get enough sleep.

Lack of sleep just aggravates stress.

Work off stress.

Go for walks, or play sport to de stress your self.

Avoid self medicating.

Alcohol and drugs can cause more stress. They will not help with your problems.

Begin to manage the effects of stress.

If you're not sleeping seek professional help.

Isolate and work with on effect at one time.

Try to "use" stress.

If you cannot escape from what's stressing you. Flow with it and try to be productive.

Try to be positive.

______________________________________________________________________ Page 12

Page 13: Effective studyskills

Think of how well you can cope, rather than how bad your coping. Stress can actually help me

worry, provided it's short term and not too serve . Stress accuse more glucose to be delivered

to the brain which makes more energy available to neurons, this in turn enhances memory

formation and retrieval

Different Learning techniques for people with learning Disabilities

Some students may have problems taking down notes during class ,they might get the notes of a

fellow classmate or they could be provided with a tape recorder so they can record the

lesson,or the teacher might print off the notes for the student .

For students who read below a certain level dvds might be provided or computer software to

help them improve their reading

some students handwriting can be slow or illegible or they might take down notes incorrectly a

computer might be provided or in exam situations they might get a scribe .

For people that have Dyslexia study’s have been shown that using coloured paper like yellow

refill pads help you to remember information better.

How school and College help people with learning Difficulties

In primary school they help children with learning disabilities by having resource teachers .These

teachers help by taking small numbers of children in groups and helping them with reading or

spelling.

In secondary school there are many ways they can help students with learning difficulties. They

may be able to get an exemption from Irish or from studying a foreign language .For leaving or

Junior cert students may be eligible for a reader ,scribe, spelling and grammar waiver ,extra time

or a special centre.

For college when you're filling out your CAO and if you have a learning disability you can

apply for the dare scheme .DARE is a disability access route to education it can help by

reducing course points to students with disabilities .Dare is available in institutes of technology

and universities it is available in eighteen across ireland .Dare cater for different Disabilities these

include Autism ,Attention deficit disorder ,blind/vision/impaired,Deaf ,developmental

coordination disorder ,mental health, neurological conditions, significant on going illness, physical

disabilities and specific learning difficulties like dyslexia.Colleges can also provide supports like

extra time in exams a reader , a scribes and they can also be provide with a recorder which

would help with recording lectures . And software which can be put on to a laptop or ipad to

teach you different learning techniques.and improve your study .In Ait they are provided with 25

euro free print credit .

Ref the Dare book pages 5,6

Use revision books and Dvds to help your study Use bullet points, highlighter and also spread out your notes . Set up your own revision programme so you have enough time to cover the topics

before an exam .This prevents cramming.

Page 15: Effective studyskills

Studies have shown studying in the morning is best time to study . Try to familiarize yourself with old exam papers and the marking scheme

Mnemonic are used for memorising facts an example is FAT DAD for the six counties of

Northern Ireland.

Study Tips for people with Dyslexia

Try to have a study routine for example study in the same area at the same time each

day

Try to have an organised study area this avoids having to looking for notes etc.

Have a to do list and set goals long term and short term .

Use mind maps and highlight key words or underline them .

Use flash cards

Have study breaks every 40 50 minutes .

Colour code copies or folders for different subjects or lectures.

Always try to label your work with the name of the topic and date .

Try to study somewhere there are no distraction like away from windows etc

Try to go over notes the day you get them so there fresh in your head .

Whilst studying people say there are foods that can help maintain your concentration levels, these are called ‘’brain foods’’. If you're struggling to stay alert whilst studying it might be an idea to look at what your eating or what your not eating.

Foods that help you focus:

______________________________________________________________________ Page 16

Page 17: Effective studyskills

1.Leafy green vegetables. A study in Neurology in 2006 shows that people who ate two or more portions of vegetables especially leafy vegetables were able to focus more. 2.Whole Grains. Which slowly release glucose throughout the day keeping you mentally alert throughout the day. Choose brown cereals like brown pasta, brown rice and wholegrain cereals and bread. 3.Blueberries. The consumption of blueberries may be effective in improving and delaying short term memory loss. 4. Blackcurrant. Vitamin C is thought to have the ability to increase mental agility. The best source is blackcurrants. 5. Pumpkin Seeds. By eating only a handful of pumpkin seeds they supply you with your daily recommended daily amount of zinc, which is vital for enhancing memory and thinking skills. 6.Oatmeal. Start off with breakfast each morning to boost your concentration and allow you to be ready for the day ahead. Its crucial to start the day off right to so you can remain focused throughout the day. 7.Bananas. A study in 2008 shows that students who ate a banana before an exam actually did better than those who did not. Bananas are high in potassium which is an essential mineral which crucial for keeping your brain and nerves healthy. 8.Water. It is important to keep the brain hydrated throughout the day. You should be drinking 1.2 litres of water each day so your brain will be more focused, experience greater clarity and be fully functioning http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/10foodsboostyourbrainpower http://news.health.com/2014/07/21/10foodsthatboostconcentration/ What to eat and do before an exam:

______________________________________________________________________ Page 17

Page 18: Effective studyskills

1.Eat brain boosting foods. Healthy food choices like eggs, nuts, yoghurts these high protein rich foods lead to greater alertness. Many consider fruit to be excellent brain food which can help you remember think and remember faster.

2.Avoid brain blocking foods. Stay away from foods with white floor on exam day such as biscuits, muffins, cakes, white breads. These foods take more time and energy to digest. They also leave you feeling heavy and fatigued. Avoid foods with high amounts of refined sugar such as chocolate and sweets. Do not eat foods that contains Ltryptophan an essential amino acid that makes you feel sleepy.

3.Drink brain boosting drinks. Always drink the recommended daily allowance of water which is 1.2 litres. Tea also helps before an exam.Dehydration makes you lose concentration and make you feel faint.

______________________________________________________________________ Page 18

Page 19: Effective studyskills

4.Avoid brain blocking drinks. Obviously avoid alcohol on the day on exams or studying as you won't do well if your drunk, feeling sick or have a headache. You should reduce your consumption of alcohol around exam times to reduce hangovers, dullness and fatigue. Avoid caffeine as this can increase your nervousness. If you drink coffee regularly and then cut out caffeine completely and suddenly before exams you can end up with caffeine withdrawal headaches. So try to eat something healthy along with your coffee.

______________________________________________________________________ Page 19

Page 20: Effective studyskills

5.Eat light meals. Don't eat big meals before an exam as this will make you feel drowsy and heavy. Instead of your brain being focused on the exam or studying its energy will be concentrating on digesting the food.

6.Don't try any new foods. This includes drinks and supplements. Even if recommended, you don't know how your body is going to react. Stick to foods and drinks your body is accustomed to.

______________________________________________________________________ Page 20

Page 21: Effective studyskills

7.Consider taking multivitamins. Most students dont have a very healthy diet and your body ends up with lack of essential vitamins and minerals. So a good way to renew the vitamins and minerals is to start taking supplements. B vitamins are great for strengthening brain functioning. Also Iron, calcium and zinc can help with your body’s ability to cope with stress.

8.Get enough sleep. Students tend to study into the late hours before exams in the hopes of cramming a little more information. Not only to you need energy from correct and nutritional food you also need energy in the form of a good night sleep.

Music Studies have shown that listening to the right music can help relax your mind which allows you to concentrate better for studying or tests. The ‘’Mozart Effect’’ which is a set of results showing that whilst listening to Mozart can help with short term improvements of certain types of mental tasks known as ‘’spatial temporal reasoning’’ which is the ability to thinking out long term more abstract solutions to logical problems that arise.

What kind of music that helps you study? 1.Baroque classical music is said to have mind boosting effects. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjnyeZLNb3E https://musopen.org/ 2.Some say that music with 60 beats per minute puts the brain in a ‘bright and breezy’ frame of mind. It is said that your thinking and creativity is are said to be easier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uY1XXgCPJs

______________________________________________________________________ Page 22

Page 23: Effective studyskills

3.If classical music isn't your thing then you could try Ambient music or sound which is designed to keep your brain engaged at a lower, subconscious level. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1onOc8xUyg 4. Eno’s which is referred to as ‘Music for Airports’’ it is useful for serious studying and deep concentration. It is designed to relax stressed out travellers at airports. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KGMo9yOaSU http://uncc49er.com/622/musiccanhelpyoustudy/

5) METHODOLOGY

Methodology is the method that you used to do something. For this project, as a group we met up several times by having team meetings, by booking a study room in the library.

______________________________________________________________________ Page 24

Page 25: Effective studyskills

We elected our team leader April and then discusses what topics and headings we had to research for our project. After our research was complete we assigned different roles and tasks to each other.

______________________________________________________________________ Page 25

Page 26: Effective studyskills

We set up a folder in google drive exchanging each others contact details and also created a group text message. As part of our project we were to create an questionnaire to gather information on our project

title ‘Essential Study Skills’. We created the the survey on the website

www.surveymonkey.com It was interesting creating the survey because none of us has ever

used the website before. The questionnaire contained questioning students on their methods of

studying and how often they study etc.We posted the

questionnaire on facebook for our peers to fill out and

hopefully give honest feedback. Seeing as studying

would mainly be related to students, We figured it was

the best idea to put it on facebook to reach out to other

students and peers in our age group.

For this project, one of the topics required to be covered was an Interview. First we contacted Joseph

______________________________________________________________________ Page 26

Page 27: Effective studyskills

Egan, but were unsuccessful as he could not carry out the interview due to the fact he is one of our lecturers.

We then emailed ‘Exam Craft Group’ who organise study skill talks to students in secondary schools asking if we could interview one of their spokespeople. This again was unsuccessful as the only time they could organise an interview would be in January/February which didn’t help on our behalf due to the fact our project is due october 19th 2014.

______________________________________________________________________ Page 27

Page 28: Effective studyskills

Interview

We also contacted limerick tutorial via email requesting an interview but they failed to reply. After numerous attempts we eventually get organised and interview with Roisín Kelly who works for Athlone Institute of Technology. She caters for people with specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia. For the heading ‘Extras’. We thought of the idea to create a blog providing students with study tips for exam time! We created the blog on wordpress.com. We found this task easy as we’ve used this website before in our Social Media Applications class.

______________________________________________________________________ Page 28

Page 29: Effective studyskills

We plan to conduct an interview with a lady who talks to Sixth Year and Third Year students

about how to improve their methods of study. I attended a talk from study focus when i was in

secondary school and found it interesting and helpful. There are photographs below of

brochures i received from the talk about study skills.

The interview will be conducted over the phone.I planned to send her an email later today.

There was a technical difficulty when sending the email. It was rejected by the server for the

recipient domain

[email protected] I sent an email sent on the Eighth of october .

I will now try and contact them by phone tomorrow the 9th of october .when I rang study skills

there was no answer i tried several times but to no avail. I then emailed Limerick tutorial but

they failed to reply .

7) DISCUSSION We used both primary and secondary research in conducting our project for effective study skills. The secondary research came from the internet and also leaflets which we got from student service about the DARE scheme. This gave us great information about effective study skills and tips and how to study and different methods to use. With the dare scheme this gave us an overview on the different resources they have for people with learning difficulties. Our primary research came from a questionnaire which we handed out in the canteen and we also did one up online through survey monkey which we shared on facebook. We also had a interview with rosion from student service. From our questionnaire we did up, it was focused on where people study and what different way they studied. The outcome from the questionnaire was that most of the people who filled out our questionnaire would study in their bedroom and would spend the average of one an hour in the evening to study. A few would listen to music but most of them wouldn't use music. Most of the people who answered the questionnaire said they would re write their notes to help them remember the important stuff they have to know. The interview gave us an insight on how people with learning difficulties cope with studying and doing exams. There is an IT room which is allocated to students with learning difficulties. In here there are special computers that will suit their needs.

Page 40: Effective studyskills

8) CONCLUSIONS The following points is a brief description about different topics we talked about in our project.

The importance of time management skills when it comes to use with effective study skills

SQ3R is a reading strategy formed from its letters: SURVEY, QUESTIONS READ and RECITE. SQ3R will help you build a framework to understanding your reading assignment.

Stress management is the ability to remain control when the situation, people and events makes excessive demands.

The different types of resources for students with learning difficulties and how they cope with it and what techniques they use.

/

That the most popular place to study is in there bedroom and the average study for one hour most evenings and the re right the notes to help them understand what they have looked over.

9) RECOMMENDATIONS Through researching information for this project we discovered the best way to study is to create good habits for yourself which may seem difficult at first, but after a while will become second nature to your lifestyle.Maintaining good study habits will help you to pick up knowledge faster and more efficiently. It will also allow you to retain information for long periods of times rather than days. In order to gain a structured study schedule you can;

Have everything you need for studying ready beforehand to avoid wasting valuable time looking for books, notes and other pieces of information. Also it is recommend to put your necessities where you can reach them easily.

It is recommended to never study within 30 minutes of going asleep. Prioritize what you need to study. Include the the subject you find more difficult first.

Make a list and then stick to it. Try to study no more than 3040 minutes at a time. Many students intent to retain more

information by taking short breaks in between study periods. Try to make sure the study break is away from your desk or where abouts your are

studying. Use your break time wisely with time reflect and not to review what you just studied hence the idea of a break.

Using a study timetable/ schedule is essential when it comes to studying. It saves time and keeps you from wandering off course. A good, well thought out schedule is said to be a lifesaver. Its up to you to learn how to develop a schedule that meets your needs, revise it if necessary and most importantly follow it.

Each night, rewrite the notes you took down in class that day, reinforcing key concepts while also making sloppy writing readable and changing abbreviations into whole words and shortened sentences into full length ones.

Promise yourself a reward such as a piece of chocolate, a walk or a phone call whenever you finish something that was hard to undertake.

.Trick yourself into getting started. If you have a paper due next week, say, “I’m not really going to outline this paper today. I’ll just spend five minutes writing anything that comes into my head about the assigned topic.” You might find yourself writing great ideas.

18) OBSERVATION RESEARCH

A a group we looked and discussed the different types of ways of effective study skills. We looked at lots of different techniques. The most helpful one we came across was the SQ3R. Most of us hadn't heard of this techniques before, but now itll come in handy when studying for exams in the future. As a group we all asked each other how do we go about study and what techniques we use . The majority us study most evenings for one hour and the most common way we study is by doing up flash cards and re writing our notes into our own words.

Page 54: Effective studyskills

2 List all the subjects you need to study. You should make a list of the subject that you have for your exam and set them out in order that you want to study them and stick with it

Page 55: Effective studyskills

3 Pull out your calendar/planner. On your calendar you should plan ahead of what you want to study from the day of your exam and plan your stuff back from there

Page 56: Effective studyskills

4 Schedule study sessions in 20 or 30minute blocks. When studying you should only study for 2030 minutes at a time. If you do more study than that you lose concentration and will forget most of the stuff you are studying

5 Write down which subject you are studying in each session. You should keep track of the subject that you have have to study for your exams and try work on them as much as you can

20) EXTRA

For this part of our project we decided as a group to create a blog giving students tips on essential

study skills. We created the blog on wordpress.com. We did not find this task difficult because we used

this website in our Social Media and Digital Applications class. The website includes posts on different

topics such as Brain Food, the SQ3R Method and Inspiration to Study. The brain food page includes

tips on which food to eat in order to help you study. The page on the SQ3R describes how exactly the

method works. This method has been proven to help students maintain better grades. For the inspiration

to study page, you can find various different successful scientists, actors and celebrities, who

suffer/suffered with learning difficulties. This page can hopefully inspire students to overcome any

difficulties they may overcome while studying. The blog also includes short study tips and videos on

study skills.
