Effects of WWI The Turbulence and Intolerance of the 1920s Todays Objective After todays lesson, students will be able to Explain the effects World War I had upon American Society Describe how World War I created a period of intolerance and turbulence Essential Skill Explicitly assess information and draw conclusions What do you think of when you hear... Chicago Race Riots Racial tensions heightened because of return of thousands of soldiers to previously occupied jobs Evicted many African Americans Black soldiers expect some preferential (deserved) treatment July 27, 1919 Eugene Williams swimming on white beach; stoned and drowned Mobs clashed; state militia sent out; 23 blacks and 15 whites dead; 500 injured; huge property damage Chicago Commission on Race Relations Competition for jobs Inadequate African American housing Inconsistent law enforcement Resurgence of the KKK Favored immigration restriction and white supremacy Discriminated against Blacks, as well as Jews, Catholics, and foreigners Promoted fundamentalism and devout patriotism Against bootleggers, motion pictures, and encouraged pure living Attacked the elite, urbanites, and intellectuals Devised a strategy called the decade, in which every member of the KKK was responsible for recruiting 10 people to vote for the KKK candidates in elections Immigration National Origins Act of 1924 created to impose immigration quotas based on nationality By 1927, total immigration limited to 150,000 There were three intended goals: Reduce the overall number of unskilled immigrants Allow families to re-unite Keep the status quo distribution of ethnicity by allocating quotas in proportion to the actual population. The idea was that immigration would not be allowed to change the national character.
