EFFICIENCY: Mechanical Explanation -1 0f 2

Efficiency is a measure of how much work a machine puts out compared to how much work or energy is put into the machine.

Efficiency is expressed as a percentage %

No machine can have an efficiency that is greater than 100 %

Efficiency is increased by reducing friction.

Page 11: Efficiency

11

EFFICIENCY: Mechanical Explanation- 2 of 2

•When efficiency is increased, less fuel or electricity is needed to do a given amount of work.

•As machines become more complex, they usually become less efficient. With more moving parts, more energy is wasted due to friction.

•Percent efficiency = work output divided by work input
