Configuring AppAssure 5: Repository Creation
• Volume determined to hold the repository files– Two components:
• Data• Metadata
• Thick Provisioning• Repository Structure:
– DFS.records• Data
– DFS.bmap • 1 bit for every 512 sector
– DFS.mbr • volume id, unique identifier
– DFS.record_ids • Maps record id’s, units that AA5 use to allocate data to the repository and stores the
metadata• When the repository is written a record id is given to the data file
– DFS.rmap • 8k logical records in the record ID File

Product Functionality: Replication
• Replication is a paired master-slave relationship between two cores in the same site, or across two sites over a WAN
• Replication occurs on a per machine basis – Master core asynchronously and continuously transmits the incremental
snapshots• Replication can be setup as one-to-one, one-to-many, or many-to-one

Master Slave
Product Functionality: Replication - WAN Optimized
• AA 5 offers new, WAN-optimized and deduplication-aware replication for off-siting data to public or private clouds
• A new Read-Match-Write (RMW) algorithm is tightly coupled with deduplication
– The two cores match keys before transferring data, and then replicate only the unique blocks that are compressed- encrypted-deduplicated across the WAN resulting in a 10x reduction in bandwidth requirements
– All data-in-flight is replicated over SSL 3.0 connection

Product Functionality: Replication - Data Seeding
• AA 5 allows you to seed (archive) Agent data to the Slave Core – The Agent data is already compressed and encrypted– If the total size of the archive is larger than the space available, the archive can
span across multiple storage devices – During the seeding process, the incremental recovery points are replicated to the
off-site location

Product Functionality: Global Deduplication
• Specific to each individual Core’s repositories• Data is written to the repository in 8k blocks• The Core runs a SHA checksum against
every 8k block– This is referenced or written to the deduplication cache
• If the block is new, it’s written to the repository• If it matches, then it is noted as a duplicate in the deduplication
cache
• Deduplication Cache– Redundant cache
• Primary and Secondary– Each is 1.6 GB hard coded into memory
