It describes the mentoring process, both during annual mentoring and during certification. It is to be used in tandem with the EFT International Code of Conduct and Ethics. Mentoring is an essential part of the process of becoming Accredited and Certified with EFT International. It is also an essential component of the safe, professional, skillful, and ethical practice of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), therefore all EFT International Accredited and Certified members must receive mentoring annually. MentoringisanessentialpartoftheprocessofbecomingAccreditedandCertifiedwithEFTInternational.Itisalsoanessentialcomponentofthesafe,professional,skillful,andethicalpracticeofEFT(EmotionalFreedomTechniques),thereforeallEFTInternationalAccreditedandCertifiedmembersmustreceivementoringannually.

1. Minimum Mentoring Requirements

1.1 MinimumMentoringRequirementsDuringtheCertificationProcess

AftersuccessfullycompletingEFTLevel1andLevel2trainingcourses,studentshavetheoptionofpursuingEFTInternationalAccreditedPractitionerCertification.Thisprocessinvolvesanintensivementoringandassessmentprocess,whichincludesaminimumof6hoursofmentoringwithaselectedEFTInternationalMasterTrainer(orNewlyQualifiedTrainer).ThisisusuallytheTrainerwithwhomtraininghasbeentaken,butanotherTrainerlevelMentormaybechosenifnecessary.

Mentoringsessionsforthispurposecanbeconductedin-person,overthephone,oronlinevialivevideoconference,either1-to-1orinagroupof8orfewerparticipants.

PleaseNote:

• AdvancedEFTPractitionerswhoarealsoApprovedMentorscannotofferthisservice

• TheTrainerlevelmentorchosenwillbetheonewhoisresponsibleforissueoftheEFTPractitionerorAdvancedPractitionercertificationandnotificationtoEFTithatthestudentisreadyforupgrade

• HoursspentingeneralgroupmentoringsessionsintendedforqualifiedPractitionersdonotfulfilltherequirementsofthecertificationprocess.

ToachievethelevelofEFTInternationalAccreditedCertifiedEFTPractitioner,students(aka“Practitioner-Candidates”orsimply,“Candidates”)mustalsosuccessfullycompletethefollowingminimumcompetencyrequirements:

• Passtheonlinemultiple-choicePractitionerExamviatheEFTInternationalwebsite.ACandidatemustbeanEFTInternationalmembertoaccesstheexam;CandidatestypicallyjoinEFTiasanEFTStudentbeforeorduringthistime.Mentoringmustincludeadiscussionoftheexam,regardlessofwhetherthestudenthaspassedorfailed

• SubmittoTraineraminimumof4casestudies.Ofthese,3mustbeclientCaseStudies(withseparateindividuals)and1willbeaPersonalCaseStudy.Casestudies*mustdemonstratecompetent,professional,andindividualizedapplicationoffoundationalEFTskillsacquiredduringEFTLevels1and2trainingandpost-trainingpracticeandexperience.*SeeEFTInternationalCaseStudyGuidanceManualforfurtherdetails

• Provideanin-personORaudioORvideoORlivedemonstrationofacompleteEFTsession(45-minutesminimum),anddiscussthissessionwithTrainer.Thisdemonstration(anddiscussion)cancountasoneclientCaseStudyatTrainerdiscretion

• Completeaminimumof50EFTpracticesessions(sometimesreferredtoas“practicehours”)workingwithatleast20differentindividuals.EachEFTsessionmustbeaminimumof45-minutesinlength

• Completeanyadditional,discretionaryrequirementsasoutlinedbytheEFTInternationalTrainerduringthecertificationprocess.Trainersmayrequireadditionalclientsessions/practicehours,1-to-1mentoringmeetings,orcasestudiesasneededtocompletetheirassessmentofthePractitioner-Candidate

OncetheCandidatehascompletedalloftherequirementsandtheTrainerisconfidentthattheCandidatehasmetthestandardforAccreditedCertifiedPractitionerlevelsetbyEFTInternational,theTrainerwillsubmitaRecommendationFormviatheEFTiwebsiteonbehalfoftheCandidate.Oncethisformhasbeenprocessed,andtherequestforAccreditedCertificationapprovedbyEFTInternational,theCandidatewillbenotifiedbyemail.Theycanthenlog-intoEFTInternational.organdupgradetheirmembershipfromEFTStudenttoAccreditedCertifiedEFTPractitioner.Annualmembershipis£45.

AsimilarprocessofassessmentandmentoringisalsorequiredwhenstudentshavetakenadvancedEFTtrainingatLevel3inordertoupgradetoAccreditedCertifiedAdvancedPractitionerlevelandforTrainercandidatespursuingNQTlevel.

TomaintainEFTInternationalAccreditedCertifiedEFTPractitionerstatus,membersmustundertakeaminimumof6hoursofmentoringwithanEFTiTrainerorApprovedMentoreachyear.Seenextsection…

1.2 MinimumMentoringRequirementsforAnnualRenewalofCertifiedMembership

AsarequirementforretainingAccreditedCertifiedmembership,EFTInternationalPractitionersandTrainersmustundertake6hoursofannualmentoringwithanEFTiTrainerorApprovedMentor.Mentoringcanbereceivedin-person,overthephone,oronlineviavideoconference–individuallyorinagroupof8orfewer.

Therearecertaincircumstanceswherementoringgroupscanexceed8participants*:

• WhenthereisasecondTrainerorApprovedMentorpresent

• SpecialpermissionfromTrainingandAccreditationBoard(e.g.inacasewherethereare9students)

*Inamentoringgroup,everyoneneedstimetospeakandbeheard.Agroupsizeofmorethan8makesthisdifficultinmentoringsessionswheretimeislimitedto1-2hours.

Inadditiontoannualmentoring,30hoursofannualCPD(ContinuingProfessionalDevelopment)isalsorequired.

NoteforTrainers:ForTrainerlevelmemberswhoareactivelytrainingaswellasworkingwithclients,mentoringforbothtrainingandpracticeofEFTisrequired.Aminimumof3hoursfortrainingworkand3hoursforpracticeworkissuggested.Morementoringcanbetakenasneeded.

TrainersandPractitionerswillreporttheseannualmentoring(aswellasCPD)activitiesdirectlytoEFTInternationalviaanonlineCPD/Mentoringformthatbecomesavailableinthe>MembersArea>RenewalsoftheEFTInternational.orgwebsitewithin30days**ofmembershiprenewal.

**PractitionersandTrainermembersarenotifiedviaemail30-days,oneweek,andonedaybeforetheirmembershipsaredueforannualrenewalandupto90daysafterexpirationofmembership.

2. What is EFTi Mentoring?

2.1 RolesandResponsibilitiesofEFTiMentors

Mentoringisaco-operativealliancebetweenaMentorandMentee.WhenanEFTimemberisseekingmentoring,Mentorsmakethemselvesavailabletoofferguidanceandsupport.ItistheresponsibilityoftheMentortodefinethewaysinwhichmentoringcanbedone(e.g.agrouponceamonth,individualsessions,etc.),aswellashowmuchitwillcost,andotherexpectationsbeforebeginningamentoringrelationship.TheroleoftheMentorwillchangedependinguponthestageofprofessionaldevelopmentoftheMentee.

PleaseNote:ThistopicisexploredwithintheshortcourseforMentors,whichhasbeendevelopedbyCarlStonierandMashaBennett.ThiscourseishighlyrecommendedforallexistingTrainers,NQTsandApprovedMentorsandforpeoplewhoarereadytoapplyforthoseroles.DetailsofthecoursecanbefoundontheEFTiwebsite.

Specifically,theroleofanEFTInternationalMentoristoprovideguidance,support,ethicalchallengeandanexperiencedperspectivetofacilitatetheprofessionaldevelopmentofEFTTrainersand/orPractitioners.ThiscanbewithinthecontextofEFTcertificationinwhichcaseTrainersfulfillthisrole,orformeetingannualmentoringrequirements,whereinAdvancedEFTPractitionerswhoarealsoApprovedMentorsmayfulfillthisrole.

MentorsareentrustedbyEFTInternationaltomentorpeersaswellaslessexperiencedTrainers,PractitionersorPractitioner-Candidates.Forthisreason,EFTirequirestheMentortobeatamoreexperiencedlevelthantheMentee.

TheMentorroleincludes:

• Ensuring,asfarasispossible,thatthereismutualunderstandingandagreementaboutthegoalsofmentoringandeachperson’sresponsibilitiesintheprocess

• Listeningandaskingquestionsasappropriatetoascertaintheprofessionalskill-setandmind-setoftheMentee(seeContentofDiscussion,below)

• Providingfeedback,guidanceandconstructivecriticismwhenappropriate

• AssistingtheMenteetodeveloptheirownidentityandownershipoftheirworkasanEFTPractitionerorTrainer

• Maintainingopen-mindedness,self-reflection,andanawarenessofthepowerdynamicsinherentintherelationshipwiththeMentee

• Delineatingthefeesandstructureofthespecificmentoringrelationshipbeforethementoringsessionsbegin

• Beinganadvisoronethicalissuesthatariseinpractice.TheMentorshouldbeinapositiontospotpotentialethicalproblemsthatmayariseandbeabletoofferappropriateguidanceonthoseissues

Contentofdiscussionincludes,butmaynotbelimitedto:

• Duringcertification,listeningto(orobserving)thecontentofsessionworkandofferingconstructivefeedback

• WorkingtogetherwiththeMenteetoidentifyareaswheretheyarechallengedprofessionally,andwherethereareopportunitiesforgrowth

• ClearlyidentifyingproblemsandcreatinganenvironmentthatsupportstheexchangeofideasthatencourageMenteestocomeupwiththeirownsolutions.Inotherwords,Mentorsofferanexperiencedpoint-of-viewfromwhichtheMenteecanmaketheirowndecisionsabouthowbesttoproceed

• OfferingMenteesongoingopportunitiestoreflectontheirpartintheEFTprocessandthePractitioner/clientrelationship

• AssistingMenteestovalueobservationandevaluationoftheirownfeelingsthatarisewithparticularclients–tofindanewperspectiveontheirclientwork.Thismayincludebecomingawareofanynon-overtagendainanyparticularsessionorclientinteraction

• SupportingandencouragingMenteestorealizeandacceptthattheirprofessionalconcernsandMentorinteractionsmayrevealaneedforfurtherworkonthemselves,eitherbythemselvesorwithanotherEFTPractitioner(e.g.WhenaMenteeisawareofhavingbeenpersonallytriggeredinaclientsession,theMentorhelpsthemunderstandhowtostepback,putasidedistractions,andrefocusattentiontowardstheclient)

Note:Mentoringsessionsdonotusuallyincludeextensivetappingforpersonalissuesunlessamenteebecomestriggeredorthereisaneedtodemonstratetechnique.Ifpersonalissuesdoemergetheyarebetterhandledatalaterdateinaone-to-oneEFTsession.See2.12FAQs

2.2 WhoCanFulfilltheRoleofEFTInternationalMentor

EFTInternationalTrainers(includingNewlyQualifiedTrainersor“NQTs”)whomentorPractitioner-CandidatesforcertificationareconsideredMentorswheninthisrole.AnyselectedEFTiTrainermayalsooffermentoringtomeetannualmembershiprequirements.

SomeAdvancedPractitionerswhohaveappliedforandbeenapprovedtooffermentoringforannualrenewalarecalledApprovedMentors.UnlikeTrainers,theycannotoffermentoringfor

certification,butareavailableduringtheyeartohelpcertifiedPractitionersmeettheirannualmentoringrequirements.

AsuitableMentorforannualrenewalpurposesmustcomefromthetwocategoriesaboveandbeeithermorequalifiedorexperiencedthanthepersontheyarementoring,orholdmembershipatanequallevelofexperiencewiththeirMentee.ExamplesincludepeermentoringamongTrainers,orwhenoneApprovedMentorassistsanother.

PleaseNote:MentoringsessionswithMentorswhoarenotEFTimembersdonotcounttowardstheminimum6-hourrequirementsforeithercertificationorrenewalpurposes.Thosenon-qualifyinghoursmaybeusedaspartoftheCPDrequirements.

2.3 DefinitionandPurposeofMentoringforCertification

Mentoringforcertificationisdefinedasaclose,agreed-uponrelationshipbetweenanEFTiTrainerandaPractitioner-CandidatewhohascompletedEFTLevel2training.OnlywithongoingmentoringandguidancecanthePractitioner-CandidateachievethelevelofintegratedskillrequiredtosafelypracticeEFTprofessionally.

WithinayearofLevel2training,astudentmayenterintoanagreementwiththeirTrainer(oranyEFTiTrainer)topursueAccreditedCertificationwithEFTInternational.Aminimumof6hoursofmentoring(individualorgroup)involvinglive(in-personorbyvideoconferenceorphone)discussionwiththeMentorisrequired.ThesesessionsmustbeliveandinteractivewiththesameTrainer.MorementoringhoursmayberequiredattheTrainersdiscretionifarecapoftrainingtopicsisrequired.

InrarecaseswheremorethanoneMentormaybeinvolvedintheassessmentprocess,theprimaryMentormustarrangeadditionaldiscussionswiththesecondaryMentor–inorderforfairevaluationtobepossible.

Note:IfmorethanoneyearelapsesbetweentheendoftheLevel2trainingcourseandthecompletionoftheworkforcertificationthentheTrainershouldrequestthatthestudentrecapsLevel1and2topicsbyeitherattendanceatanothercourseorbyspendingtimeontherecapduringmentoringsessions.

EachTrainer-levelMentorhasthefreedomtodesigntheirownmodelforCertification,includingsessionduration,composition,andcontent–includingactivities,topics,andtimetable–aslongasallEFTiAccreditedCertificationrequirementsaremet.

2.4 GoalsofMentoringforCertification

Mentoringforcertificationisconductedinthecontextofateachingrelationship.MentorshelptheirMenteesidentifyandfillinanygapsinEFTknowledgeandskills,developtheirprofessionalcompetence,andintegratefoundationalskills.

Duringcertification,Mentorsalsoassessthequalityofacandidate’sEFTpractice–theirArtofDeliveryofEFT–competent,professional,andindividualizedapplicationoffoundationalEFTskills(seeEFTInternationalGlossaryofTerms).

Mentoringforcertificationincludes,butisnotlimitedto:

• Identifyingareaswheremoreguidanceisneeded

• Answeringquestions

• Offeringconstructivefeedbackandsupportforpurposesoflearningandgrowing

• InspiringPractitioner-Candidatestogobeyondcurrentcompetenciesintofuturepossibilities

• Togetherwiththecandidate,carefullyreviewingallcasestudiesforpurposesofbothlearningandassessment

• AssessingwhetherthecandidatehasintegratedallfoundationalEFTskills,andidentifyingareasrequiringfurtherdevelopment

• Encouragingself-reflectionandtakingpersonalresponsibilityforactionsanddecisions

• Makingsureeachcandidateiswell-versedinEFTInternationalpolicies,procedures,andethics

• EnsuringtothebestoftheMentor’sassessmentabilitythatthecandidateiscapableofsafe,professionalpractice

2.5 DefinitionandPurposeofAnnualMentoring

AnnualmentoringisthepracticeofguidingandmotivatingafellowPractitionertocontinuegrowingandevolving,byprovidingacontextualplatformforreflectingontheirprofessionalpracticeandabilitiesmoreobjectively,improvingtheirperformance,andfine-tuningtheirskills.ItisrequiredforallAccreditedCertifiedPractitioners,AdvancedCertifiedPractitioner,SpecialtyProviders,andTrainers.

AnnualMentoringisacolleague-to-colleaguerelationshipwhereinamoreexperiencedEFTTrainer/ApprovedMentorservesasaresource,helpingtheMenteeextendtheirprofessionalskillsandabilities,identifyproblems,andfindsolutions.

Mentorsprovideresourcesandstrategies(e.g.moretoolssuchasanobjectiveviewofwhatmightbedoneinacertainsituation,waystocreativelyapplyfoundationalskills),whileencouragingself-awarenessandgreaterprofessionalism.Throughaprocessofopencommunicationandsupportivefeedback,qualitymentoringfostersconfidenceandself-reliance.

Duringmentoringsessions,forexample,anEFTInternationalMentorwillgivefeedbacktotheirMenteeregardingtheirprofessionaluseofEFT.Theywillalsomakethemselvesavailabletoanswer

questions,assistwithaddressingspecificareasofconcern,andencouragetheMenteetoreflectupontheirownprocessesinsessions.

Aminimum6hoursofannualmentoringmustbedoneinlivegroupsof8orfewerparticipants,in1-to-1meetingsovertheyear,orinacombinationofthesetwomodels.Seesection1.2forotherpotentialcircumstances.

NoteforTrainers:ForTrainerlevelmemberswhoareactivelytrainingaswellasworkingwithclientsmentoringforbothtrainingandpracticeofEFTisrequired.Aminimumof3hoursfortrainingworkand3hoursforpracticeworkissuggested.Morementoringcanbetakenasneeded.

2.6 GoalsofAnnualMentoring

EFTInternationalseekstofosterethicalandprofessionalEFTpractice,includingahighdegreeofeffectiveness,accountabilityandintegrityamongmemberEFTTrainersandPractitioners.MentorssupportandchallengetheirMenteestobeself-reflective,resourceful,andreadytomovebeyondtheircurrentcompetenciesintofuturepossibilities.Byrequiringmentoring,EFTInternational:

• EncouragesasupportiveclimatewhereEFTInternationalTrainersandPractitionerscanreflectcandidlyuponboththequalityoftheirprofessional(andpersonal)workaswellastheirrolesandresponsibilitiesbefore,duringandaftertheirEFTinteractions

• FostersneededconnectionandcommunityamongEFTprofessionals

• BringsPractitionersup-to-datewithdevelopmentsandbest-practicesinourorganizationandwithinourfield

• Offerspracticalskillsandstrategiesforworkingmoreeffectively,ethically,andprofessionally

• CelebrateswhatisgoingwellintheMentee’spracticeofEFT

EFTInternationalmentoringisdesignedspecificallyto:

• AssistPractitionerstodelivereffectivecaretotheirclients

• HelpensurePractitionersdonoharm

• HelpPractitionerstodeveloptheabilitytoreflectonethicalissues

• HelpensurethatPractitionerspossessessufficientEFT(andinterpersonaland/orcoaching)skillstohandlethecomplexitiesofthehumanemotionalexperiencewithintheirscopeofpractice

• IncreaseEFTPractitionercompetence,confidence,andskill

• Encourageself-reflectionandcongruence(or“practicingwhatyoupreach”)

2.7 ModelsforAnnualMentoring

AllEFTiPractitionermembersmustcompleteaminimumof6hoursofmentoringperyear(fromthedateofupgrade,registrationorrenewal).Thiscanbedoneusingseveralmodels:

IndividualMentoring

Inindividual(aka1-to-1)mentoring,amembercontactsanApprovedEFTInternationalMentorandarrangestoworkpersonallywithher/himoverthecourseofthatyear,inperson,byphoneorviavideoconference.Emailsupportisusuallyavailableasneeded,butthehoursmustbelive.Feesanddurationofsessionsshouldbediscussedandagreed-uponinadvance.MentoringGroups

SomeEFTiPractitionermembersmaychoosetoattendmentoringgroups(in-person,byphoneorviavideo-conference)withoneormoreEFTInternationalMentors.Thesegroupsmaybeofferedinavarietyoflengths,mostcommonlyin60minuteor90minutetimeperiods,butalsoinfull-orpartial-dayformats.

Livegroupsaregenerallyrequiredtohave8participantsorfewer,exceptincertaincircumstances(seesection1.2above)

Byattendingsixhours,theyearlyrequirementiseasilymetinastructuredgroupformat.ThismethodhoweverdoesnotprovideorguaranteethattheMentorisavailableforongoingquestionsandmentoringthroughoutthecourseoftheyearshouldtheneedoccur.TheMentormustmakethetermsandconditionsofattendanceandsubsequentinteractionscleartoallparticipantspriortoconductingthegroup.

CombinationofMentoringGroupsandIndividualMentoring

Itmaybeadvantageoustodoaportionofannualmentoringinagroup,andthebalancewithpartindividual1-to-1sessions.Therearegreatadvantagestohavingsomeannual,individual(or1-to-1)mentoringsessions,thustoenablingmorein-depthdiscussionaboutcases,questions,andpersonalskillsonanas-neededbasis.

Peer-to-PeerModel

EFTInternationalTrainersandApprovedMentorsarealsorequiredtoreceive6hoursperyearofmentoring,andaflexiblepeer-to-peermodelisoutlined.Forexample,aTrainerorApprovedMentormaycontactapeerwiththesamelevelofexperienceorgreaterforpersonalizedindividualmentoringconsultationsasneeded.Theymightalsoattendamentoringgroup.Specificarrangements(e.g.financial,lengthoftime)mustbemadecleartoallpartiesinvolvedbeforementoringcommences.

2.8 Best-PracticesforMentoringGroups

Belowaresome“bestpractice”examplesofformatsMentorscanusewiththeirgroups.

Regardlessoftheformatchosen,MentorsmustmakeallMenteesawareoftheparticularformatand

Transferenceisanunconsciousprojectionoffeelings,attitudesandbehaviorontoanotherperson.AcommonformofthisiswhentheclientformsanemotionalattachmenttothePractitioner,mayelevateaPractitionertoanidealizedposition(e.g.theroleofaparent,partner,orobjectofsexualdesire).Theseprojectionscanbepositiveornegative.

InEFT,thisismorelikelytohappenwhentheclientviewsthePractitionerasthe“healer”orPractitionerscastthemselvesinthisrole.Forexample,ifyouseeyourself,asa“fixer”,aclientismorelikelyseethemselvesasthe“broken”oneintheinteraction.Whenweworkinaclient-centeredwayandclearlycommunicatetheself-empowermentofEFT,thisislesslikelythisistooccur.

IndicatorsofclienttoPractitionertransferenceincludestatementssuchas,“YouaretheonlyoneIcanturnto,”textsfromtheclientafterbusinesshours,expensivegifts,aclientfrequentlyaskingoverlypersonalquestionsofthePractitioner,oraclientaskingtoseethePractitionersocially(e.g.invitingthemtoawedding,havingacoffeedate,requeststo“friend”onFacebook).

Counter-transferencehappenswhenthePractitionerrespondsto,andactsupon,theirown(possiblyunconscious)feelingsaboutclient.IndicatorsofCounter-transferenceincludeexcessiveorinappropriateafter-hoursemailing,texting,or“checking-in”onthepartofthePractitioneror,inextremecircumstances,initiationofaninappropriatepersonalrelationshipwithaclient.Causesmaystemfromunresolvedpastemotionalissuesandasaresult,boundariesareblurred(orbroken)andthePractitioner/clientrelationshipiscompromised.ItistheresponsibilityofthePractitionertobeonthelookoutforcounter-transference.

Otherindicatorsofcounter-transferencemayincludeintenselydislikingaclient,wantingtoaccepteverypotentialclientevenwhenit’sapparentthattheyarenotagoodfit,continuingtoallowextratimeinasessionforcertainclients(withorwithoutcompensation),otherboundarycrossings,orfeelingthataclientdoesn’tfeelenoughgratitudeforyourwork.

Beingemotionallytriggeredbyaclientisthemostcommonsignthatthereareunresolvedemotionalissuesbeneaththesurface,whichneedtoberecognizedandhandledappropriatelyoutsideofthePractitioner/clientrelationship.ThiscanbeaninvaluableareaforMentorstoexplorewithMentees.

OncethePractitionerhaslearnedtorecognizetransferenceandcounter-transference,theywillbebetterabletotakeeveryopportunitytobeeffectivewitheachclientbecausetheyarecompletelypresentandmindfuloftheappropriateroleofbothPractitionerandclientintheinteraction.

Onceamember’sEOT(EndofTermorRenewal)datehaspassed,thememberprofile(andallthemember’sassociatedEvents)willnolongerbepubliclyvisibleontheEFTInternational.orgwebsite.Thememberthenhas90daystocontacttheMembershipSecretary(viaemailorviathecontactformonthewebsite)toarrangeforrenewalofmembershipand,ifnecessary,agreementtofulfillordemonstrationofhavingfulfilledannualCPDandMentoringrequirements.

After90dayshaspassed,theformermembermustthencontactanEFTInternationalTrainertoarrangeforanymentoringneededtoreinstatetheirmembership.Inthepast,incaseswhereamemberisfacingpersonalissuesandhastostopworkingforawhile,theyhavebeenaskedtocontactanEFTInternationalTrainerwhentheyarereadytoresume,toreceiveassistancegettingbackuptospeed.InthiscasetheTrainerwillfillouttheTrainerRecommendationformsothatthemembercanbeapprovedtore-joinEFTInternational.

Do my 6-Hours of mentoring count towards my 30-hours of CPD?
