Would you like to sponsor a bench?In 2005 an Anzac Day commemoration was re-established in Eumundi after an absence of almost 20 years. Two years later the Anzac Day committee assisted by Council planned and set up seven plaques and trees as a memorial to the seven men from Eumundi who died in World War II. In 2009 the �rst stage of an ambitious program of benches between the plaques and trees commenced to make a memorial with a large re�ective area for visitors. Five benches donated by the community were dedicated at the Anzac service in 2009.

The Anzac Day committee is now planning to install up to seven more benches between the seven plaques. This second stage project would complete the World War II memorial. The committee plans to dedicate the additional benches on Remembrance Day.

The cost of donating a bench (similar to the one in the photo) is $550 which includes a brass plaque labelled as per the donor's preference. Would you like to donate a bench, perhaps in memory of a relative or friend? Michael explained that any application was up to the communities to back and do. He said “they would not be starting from scratch” as a number of Eumundi and district individuals and associations enthusiastically participate in activities and community sector boards already.

“It’s about protecting where you live. However, it’s important to note that biospheres are non-legislative and non-political. It’s the will of the people.

“Our board is now in a position to provide technical knowledge and guidance. Our experts will organise to address public meetings in Eumundi soon. In the meantime, the Biosphere secretariat is able to assist with information enquires on 5449 5122,” he said.

“Can I undertake a risk management process in these difficult times?”

During these difficult and challenging times for small business it is essential to understand and address the risks that could

have a significant and negative impact on your business. Also remember that having a risk management process in place can make your business ready when an opportunity arises to move your business forward.

Risk is the chance of any event happening that will have an impact on your objectives. We all establish the objectives for our business to enable us to identify when our business is successful. An integral component of this process is to have in place a “risk management process” that fits your business. In relation to this process “one size” does not fit all businesses.

Remember you know your business and therefore you are the best person to understand the internal and external risks to your business. For example, externally you should consider new laws and regulations being considered by the three levels of government. However, you should consult other stakeholders who can provide input to you as you progress this process, such as your bank manager or accountant. When you start to consider the risks to your business now and into the future you need to look “outside the box” or how your business currently operates. Such an approach will ensure that no “key” risks are excluded from your review.

To start the process you should identify, analyse, evaluate and treat the risks that you have identified. You measure your risks in terms of the likelihood of a particular risk occurring [examples of rating would include almost certain to rare] then you must consider the consequences should such a risk occur [examples of ratings would include insignificant to catastrophic]. When you combine likelihood and consequence your overall rating of your risk could be high, significant, medium or low. You should then consider processes you have in place to mitigate the event occurring. For example in relation to the collection of outstanding debtors a vigorous monthly review of your debtors with strong action as required could reduce your risk in this area and also your rating of that risk from say high to medium. The treatment of each individual risk could include acceptance, prevention/reduction, spread [e.g. insurance] or avoid the risk. Risks with an overall high rating need to be given close and on going attention. There are tools such as a “risk wheel” that can assist you in this process.

If you employ staff they should be part of this process and communicate to them details of the process and the outcomes from the process. Your staff can be part of the solution in identifying and addressing risks to the business. Your risks should be regularly reviewed, say when you prepare your quarterly BAS. As you progress this process you need to consult with your professional advisor.

A soundly based risk management process can make your business opportunity ready and ultimately successful.

Local render and painted finish company, Rockcote

has announced a major, national distribution deal with retail hardware chain Bunnings Warehouse. Rockcote’s acrylic and cement render products can now be found at 216 Bunnings Warehouse stores across Australia, in addition to Rockcote’s existing 40 trade distributors.

Rockcote managing director and Eumundi local Bob Cameron said that the deal with Bunnings was in line with the company’s vision to expand its core business from a primarily professional and larger trade focused market into the serious DIY and broader

trade market. “Our existing distributors do

a great job of supplying our product to the ‘converted’, largely architects, builders and qualified tradespeople who understand the quality of our product, appreciate its performance and value the benefit of our company’s 25 plus years of experience.

“The new arrangement with Bunnings will allow us to supply what we believe to be the best render products on the market into the hands of the thousands of Bunnings’ DIY enthusiasts and perhaps smaller trade operators who may not yet be familiar with our product,” Bob said.

This month’s meeting was kindly hosted by Mick Barton and Maree Thomson at their home in Memorial Dr. Both

Mick and Maree provided members with an overview of their businesses – Sunstate Stamps and Maree Thomson, Marketing & Communication Specialist.

Cr Paul Tatton was also present at our meeting and provided a number of updates on the reassessment of the Lonergan Lane new one way arrangement, the potential re-development and demolition of the of the top of town area, concern over heavy vehicles damaging the new intersection and what needs to be done, the poor state of the entrances into Eumundi and the changes to be effected shortly to Eumundi parking.

There was further discussion on new signage for Caplick Park and also the state of the roundabouts which need to be maintained. Cr Paul Tatton spoke about the Keep Australia Beautiful “Adopt a Road” program and suggested that the ECC and other Eumundi organisations may like to consider adopting Memorial Dr which would involve volunteers engaging in quarterly litter campaigns. This is to be progressed further with fellow Eumundi organisations. Other topics of interest covered Revitalising Eumundi’s reputation as a Centre for the Arts, Food Fest, Festive Markets to be held on the last three Fridays of December and the first two Fridays of January 2012.

Updates were provided by working parties representing 2011 Food Fest on Sunday 20 November, the 2012 Body Art in May 2012 and the Light Up Eumundi in conjunction with other festive activities occurring early December.

The new package – Delivering a Natural Advantage to business – has the backing of key business groups including the Sunshine Coast Business Council, the Chambers of Commerce Alliance and council’s own Economic Development Advisory Board.This package marks a new approach by council and is designed to establish the Sunshine Coast as an ideal place to invest and a region which supports local business. Council’s business investment framework and local business support program will work hand in hand to help local businesses to grow, as well as encouraging appropriate new investment. It is about strengthening the region’s economy, encouraging jobs for the people who live here and supporting our local businesses to �ourish – in what is undoubtedly a pretty di�cult economic climate.We are establishing a single entry point to council for all new business investors; we will be assigning every one of these their own client manager; and we will be working with the business community to promote regional success stories and what we have to o�er. Furthermore, for major business investment proposals that will bring larger numbers of jobs to the region, we have established a new incentive scheme to make sure we have a better o�er than other regions or can retain the existing business here.

Several break and enters that have occurred in Seib Road,

Eumundi. In the days prior to 2 September two residences were broken into and searched with one of the residences having some jewellery stolen. A business premises in Seib Road was also broken into about a fortnight later and a high pressure cleaning unit as well as other items was stolen.

Some random acts of vandalism have occurred in various areas in September including damage to a pedestrian gate of a Lone Hand Rd residence in Eumundi and letterbox in Grays Road, Doonan. It is therefore timely to

remind readers not to hesitate to telephone police if they hear or observe rowdy behaviour in their streets at night or at any time. Police may not be far away and can easily make a patrol of your street if requested.

Police recently received an anonymous phone call from a reader who observed a car being damaged by a male person in Memorial Dr Eumundi in the vicinity of Eumundi Meats several weeks ago. Police are keen to speak further with this witness about that matter. So please phone us on 5442 8222 if you were that person.

Currently I’m about half way through a solo ride from NSW

to Cairns on a heavily loaded bicycle, a pushie. It’s a series of mostly easy rides spread over quite a large number of days.

But riding a bicycle up the Bruce Highway can be a little surreal.

At times, it’s surprisingly peaceful and at these quiet moments the most noticeable thing is the birdsong. From raucous parrots to tweeting sparrows, the experience of riding is enchantingly different from driving.

Of course it doesn’t last. Platoons of cars and trucks not only erase the soundscape, they also overwhelm the gentle rhythm of pedalling and demand my undivided attention.

At these times, the world consists of tranquillity on the left, turmoil on the right and a white-margined refuge of tarmac in between. Sometimes the refuge is wonderfully generous: metres

wide, gently sloped, smooth. But mostly it’s a mean, rough and stingy friend, a vital companion that occasionally abandons me altogether.

This particular road carries another point of interest: ridiculously wide trucks, mostly heading to the mines with gargantuan equipment on board. They have a different sound, sometimes even a different vibration through the frame of the bike. The rear view mirror reveals a piece of metal or rubber projecting into the shoulder area of the road, MY refuge. The truckies are fantastic and do their absolute best to give me space but sometimes, not very often, a detour into the gravel seems like a pretty good option.

It sounds much harder than it is. After a while, managing the hazards becomes second nature. The vast majority of drivers are careful, considerate, even generous; experience tells you which ones to be wary of. And once you reach that point, the fleeting periods of tranquillity are such a rush, they make it all worthwhile.

John and I enjoy watching Heartbeat so a trip to

“Aidensfield” was on our itinerary. Heartbeat was filmed in Goathland, a Yorkshire town close to Whitby. We drove over the spectacular Yorkshire moors covered in purple heather, to a tiny village with two pubs – one the Aidensfield Arms – three souvenir shops, a post office, a couple of tea rooms and Aidensfield railway station, which is a stop for passenger steam trains travelling between Pickering and Whitby several times daily.

Even though it was a cool, autumn Wednesday the village had plenty of visitors from all around the world, many of whom arrived by steam train. After a wander through the shop and a look into

the pub we had a lovely morning tea with homemade cake, showed off our Eumundi Green and then set out to further explore the beautiful Yorkshire countyside.

Verrierdale Rural Fire Brigade: Executive rolled over for second year. Three new members have raised their personnel to 18. Successful grant applications have added GPS units and a portable generator and light system for incident control or training after dark.

Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade AGM saw re-election of Alf Newman as chair. Other elected office bearers are John Turnbull treasurer, Tim Jackway first officer, Michael Roach second officer and John Kennedy as third officer.

The Cooroy Family Support Centre AGM was held at the Cooroy Library. The Management Committee retained the three executive members and added two new members: John Butterworth

Gemfest time is here again

Now into its fifth year, Nambour Lapidary Club members are

excited to announce Gemfest 2011 which they hope continues the growth in interest evident every year.

There will be 160 dealers and traders with sales and displays and everything for the lapidary hobbyist to help with cutting and polishing rocks and gems.

Gem Fest is a fun day out for the whole family with demonstrations

throughout the day of faceting, as well as silver making, face painting and activities for the children, food and refreshments, raffles and lucky door prizes.

Members are pleased to be able to help other not-for-profit organisations such as Woombye Scouts who look after the parking on site, for a small donation, and the Palmwoods Lions club who provide catering on the day.

Charities win a reprieve: A federal regulation that would have imposed back pay liabilities on over 300 Queensland community

service organisations has been scrapped following representations from, amongst others, Member for Fairfax Alex Somlyay. Alex contacted his Queensland colleagues, urging them to talk to local groups. He organised for a local group to go to Canberra to meet Senator Abetz. After considerable negotiation, Senator Abetz agreed to withdraw the motion as it became clear that some service organisations were likely to go out of business because of the 18-38 per cent back pay determinations. Now local organisations such as United Synergies Ltd will be responsible only for the new increases to their workers without having to back pay to Jan 2010.

Director positionsThe Eumundi Historical Foundation Ltd (EHF) was established as a not-for-pro�t company in January 2011 to manage and support the Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre and the Eumundi School of Arts, to establish a Public Fund to support these buildings, and initiate and manage projects that provide a bene�t to the community of Eumundi and district.

The EHF board is seeking to strengthen its membership by recruiting directors to support major projects and to build its grant and philanthropic funding. I realise there are still some people who may believe that

unless we actually make the product we sell then we are not really marketeers.

How wrong you are. Not for one minute knocking those that do, I personally believe we also have some of the greatest collection of designers, negotiators, importers and sales persons in any one area of Australia.

Marketeers of Eumundi are having to compete not only with fellow stallholders, many selling similar products (jewellery, clothing etc.), but against established retailers who are at present on sale 365 days of the year.

Many Eumundi stallholders design their products, source manufacturers (possibly overseas) and invest in the cloth, dye, moulds etc. to produce their products. Interstate and international travel is the norm, and, depending on the product, that could involve multiple trips. While visiting their manufacturer/supplier they can

This year’s mentoring day involved two classes, one to focus on strawberries as a base product and the second avocados. The students had to come up with products to sell on a market stall.

Their products won four medals at the highly competitive Sydney Royal Fine Food Show, with a gold for its mustard chutney, a silver for its Jamaican jerk rub and a bronze for its Cajun rub (meat-seasoners) and ultra-hot x-rated sauce. “The quality of produce the Sunshine Coast provides is second-to-none and Noosa Chilli has done us proud with these wins,” Cr Lew Brennan said.

The students had to furnish business plans, marketing collateral, research on the product and an application form to become a stall holder. Jan together with markets manager Peter Homan assessed their application and awarded marks for each section.

Arts Scene

This weekend is a great opportunity to keep the younger

family members enthralled and to introduce them to live theatre (and at a budget price). Tomorrow, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, The Indee presents six classic stories by Hans Christian Andersen: The Ugly Duckling, The King’s New Clothes, The Little Match Girl, Thumbelina, The Princess and the Pea and The Little Mermaid.

Hans Christian Andersen is played by Luke Lanham and Miss Henrik, the long suffering schoolmistress, is played by Inger Vinogradov, with Debra Pitura as the king. All other roles, including the town schoolchildren, are played by members of The Indee Young Players.

Each story is treated differently: for instance Thumbelina is presented as a shadow puppet play, while The Little Mermaid has an underwater wonderland setting and The King’s New Clothes takes place in the town square.

Directed by Carol Burls (The Wind in the Willows, The Reluctant Dragon, Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan and Hansel & Gretel) it’s a colourful, singing, dancing, production that should delight the whole family.

There’ll be four performances only, tomorrow, Friday at 5 pm, this Saturday 1 October at 4pm, and 11am and 3pm this Sunday 2 October.

year for the next three years to The Noosa Longweekend Festival as part of its Community Partnerships Funding Program.

It seems the next best thing to going out for a curry is to make one using David’s recipe for “fantastic” Chicken Tikka Masala, Britain’s favourite national dish! It is complemented by a simple vegetarian recipe for Saag Aloo (spinach potato).

MethodBlend vegetable oil, ginger,

tomato puree, garlic, lemon juice, and green chilli.

Add the salt and spices and mix well. Stir in fresh coriander.

Blend in yoghurt until very thoroughly mixed.

Cut slits into chicken or cut chicken into pieces and marinate overnight or for at least three hours.

Barbecue marinated chicken on high setting until cooked and quite browned.

Heat ghee or oil in a large frying pan or wok over medium heat. Add onions and garlic and stir fry until golden brown – about 10 minutes.

Add chicken and ginger and mix well. Stir in tomatoes, chilli powder, paprika, sugar, almonds, coconut milk, tomato puree and fenugreek/methi.

Bring to a simmer and slowly add the cream.

Simmer gently for 12 minutes, sprinkle with flaked almonds and serve with basmati rice and poppadums.

Add the chilli powder, cumin, coriander, salt and pepper and stir for 1 minute.

Add 2 tablespoons of water to the pan. Cover, reduce the heat and simmer.

As the potato cooks, it might start sticking to the pan, so after 10 minutes, if necessary, add two more tablespoons of water. The potato should not be allowed to brown.

After 10 minutes, stir in the fenugreek and the spinach and cook over low heat for 15 minutes or until the potato is soft and the spinach has reduced. The spinach reduces faster if the pan is covered.

Serve as a vegetarian main dish or as a side dish.

Do you think it would be possible to encourage children

to spend more time outside via a computer game and to learn more about the Australian wildlife? This is the question that Uwe Terton has been living with for seven years, the basis for his thesis as part of his doctorate program at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

His computer simulation game prototype called Jumping the Fence is designed primarily for the eight to 12 year olds age group. A working prototype has been tested at a Sunshine Coast based primary school twice and has proven that the game idea is working and the proposed outcome would be achieved by playing the game. A development team is now needed to take it to the next level so that it may be released to the market and schools.

Uwe was born 47 years ago in a suburb of Reutlingen, close to Stuttgart in the southern part of West Germany. The suburb was established in 1961 for war refugees with multi storey apartment blocks and terrace

Earlier this year the Eumundi and District Historical

Association received a grant from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to scope ways to broaden the existing collection of social history and heritage items in the Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre (DE) collection. The scoping study that followed also investigated ways to improve access to the DE collection for everyone. A partnership with Genealogy Sunshine Coast and advice and help from a number of regional community groups provided a huge boost to identifying practical and affordable, partnership based solutions.

Small museums and galleries like DE can provide essential community meeting places and be important community hubs to bring everyone together. They can also provide local information for community decision-making. The solutions identified as possibilities in the long-term envisage DE as a larger more socially inclusive facility that welcomes all.

In particular the study sees DE and the School of Arts as special, iconic buildings and centres in Eumundi that can play major community roles in years to come.

Uwe was convinced that by obtaining a good education he would be able to leave the suburb and experience life beyond it. University is open for everyone in Germany and is free. At 19 Uwe worked in a home for elderly people as all male school leavers

had to go to the army or do social service for 18 months to learn about life, the community and society. Here he learned much about living and dying.

Uwe met his wife Katrin in the local pub in Reutlingen. Together they travelled a lot. Uwe says, “Travelling was fantastic, it is a very good school”. Katrin and Uwe always dreamed of living in a warmer climate. That dream had to wait a bit because both had to finish their university degrees

first. The following years were busy for the Tertons, their three sons Tim now 19, Nils now 16 and Bela now 14 were born. Uwe was a co-founder of what was once Germany’s largest online community site Meltropolis which went under when the big new media bubble burst in 2000.

The family viewed this as an opportunity to leave Germany. By 2001 all their belongings were packed into a container with their new life laid out before them in Eumundi. Uwe and Katrin believe that Eumundi is a very special community that helped them to grow roots quickly and made them feel very much at home. Their love of nature was the source of inspiration to create the computer game which developed into Uwe’s PhD project and has also been contributing much to their own knowledge about the unique Australian wildlife.

In the coming years Uwe and Katrin are planning to work more on their creative projects as a team, while the children are becoming more self sufficient.

In the short term it is recommended that all Eumundi Green editions will be converted and held electronically in a searchable format. The Eumundi Green collection and the other 8000 items held by DE (including approximately 3500 photographs) will be available to all at DE, open seven days a week. DE is also an Indigenous keeping place and holds a special collection of local indigenous artefacts.

The findings of the scoping study will support an application from the Eumundi Historical Foundation to the Regional Development Australia Fund for the redevelopment of DE and upgrading of the School of Arts and of the pathways between the two buildings. DE is always looking for volunteers and is now hoping to expand its services to help other small museums. Most importantly the proposed redevelopment of the DE building aims to improve access to people with a disability, prams and the frail aged. The redeveloped building would become a jewel in the regional crown and ensure Eumundi is the inclusive heart of the hinterland for many years to come.

How can you do that without expensive modification?

Easy! Use your car half as much. That may seem impossible, but a little modification of systems in the home and by networking with others, you can do it and save both money and emissions.

The next thing is to reduce those single person trips. If you are going out with friends, try to meet at a central point and share the ride. Workmates may car pool and parents may get together and roster trips to school, the pool, and sporting fixtures. Some folk get so good at this they actually don’t need a second car. Short trips may be done on foot or by bike but if you need a bit of horse power, then maybe a motor scooter or bike will help. We have our Eumundi bus now and utilising this may reduce car trips and you will meet other community members at the same time.

approach to its application as the benefits to countries around the world are enormous. Apart from establishing the product within Australia, they have already had discussions with USA, India and other countries. They are currently planning a trip to USA and India taking what is essentially a Sunshine Coast developed leading edge sustainability product to one of the most populated countries in the world. India stands to gain much in its fight against over used land.

In addition to this global approach, this new company has been supporting flood affected farmers throughout Queensland since they were ravaged by this disastrous event. Farmers in the Lockyer Valley and elsewhere are still facing the problem as to how to reconstitute their soil after it was washed away by recent floods. It is a situation many have had to deal with before and the use of chemical fertilisers is not a good option.

Every year we grow our food using chemical fertilisers, and in doing so exhaust and deplete its natural ability to revitalise. Our innovative product based on converting natural animal waste, provides a solution that has eluded us for hundreds of years. The added benefit is effective and sustainable management of waste products.”

Development of the process took these Sunshine Coast locals numerous years of dedicated research and testing to achieve what many agricultural research institutes have failed to achieve, and they are now ready to show the world what our region is capable of producing.

The company has so far donated 70,000 litres to those farmers in need with the help of many organisations such as Aussie Helpers, Landcare, GrowCom and others. Individual farmers who found out about their offer through media coverage also benefited.

The company has pledged 125,000 litres and has been busy manufacturing product and buying 1000 litre containers to

support the donation. Danny has been driving the containers out to the areas of need but Landcare have now organised transport to collect them from the Eumundi facility.

Danny (photo below) commented, “Our innovative product (Dr Grow It All) based on converting natural animal waste, provides a solution that has eluded us for hundreds of years. Although the floods were very bad for the farmers, they do present a positive in allowing the establishment of organic practices which will benefit all of us in the longer term.”


We had to brake sharply to avoid hitting a fairly big

lizard catching some late autumn warmth from the tarmac of a local sealed road. “Oh look – it’s a frilly”, (short for frill-necked lizard) was the response from our visitors. It’s a common mistake.

The lizard was a Bearded Dragon, Pogona barbata, (meaning bearded in both Greek and Latin). From its dark coloured ‘beard’ we knew it was a male and he was not pleased with our attempt to shoo him of the road. He showed that by making himself look fierce by extending his beard and gaping his mouth, showing the bright yellow inside. That sometimes scares people, but never works on cars.

The Agamid or Dragon family of lizards has about 60 species in Australia, including that cute little Thorny Devil from central Australia. Bearded Dragons are amongst the largest, measuring up to 250 mm from nose to base of tail with the tail adding another 320 mm or so. They get their name from the beard-like pouch or fold of skin under their chin which they can extend to make themselves look bigger. Their diet consists of mainly insects but they also nibble on plants. Dragons have very good eye-sight and often climb onto fence-posts and tree stumps on the lookout for prey. And when they get going they show an amazing turn of speed.

Bearded Dragons are fairly common and range up the east coast of Australia in a fairly wide belt, usually preferring drier country. Like all other dragons they are egg layers.

The real Frill-necked Lizards, or, more correctly, Frilled Lizards, Chlamidosaurus kingii, are also dragons but very different from

the ‘beardies’. Their scientific name is a combination of the Greek words for cloak and lizard and honours the surveyor Captain Philip Arthur King. It refers to the cape or frill around their necks and shoulders. This frill is extended to make them look bigger and fiercer and if that has no effect they get up on their hind legs and run at great speed to a suitable tree. These two behaviours have made ‘frillies’ Australia’s most recognised lizard internationally. Frilled Lizards are mainly arboreal in dry woodlands but forage on the ground for insects and small vertebrates. Their body size is about the same as the Bearded Dragons with their long tail being double that again. Their range was from the Kimberley across northern Australia and down the Queensland coast almost to the NSW border. They are not uncommon in northern areas but unfortunately they have pretty much disappeared from the Sunshine Coast and below, and all “sightings” in recent years have turned out to be Bearded Dragons.

So if you see a big, spikey lizard with extended skin folds and gaping mouth on the road or on a fence post, its almost certainly not a ‘frilly’.

Leanne’s Green ThumbWater lilies Now that spring has arrived, water lilies are coming out to play once again sprouting new leaves and forming �ower buds. Tropicals have been a bit late coming on due to the cold winter we had. However lotuses are lea�ng up nicely and the hardies are performing very well. If you haven’t already fertilised your lotuses or lilies it is time to do so now. Pop in at least two water fertiliser tablets with your lilies and either four or �ve into your lotuses to kick start them and then follow up every six to eight weeks.

It is a good idea to have a few oxygenating plants in your pond to help keep the water clearer. Oxygenating plants are also good for �sh if you have them in your pond. Do not feed your �sh everyday as you want the �sh to take care of any mosquito larvae present. As a suggestion feed �sh every two to three days and let them eat out of the pond the other days. Fish will also eat aphids. We have a huge range of water plants including lotuses, lilies, oxygenators, marginals etc, so pop into for us to help with your pond revival.

These common brushtails were photographed at Doonan. Brushtails are about the size of a domestic cat, covered in grey fur with a cream underbelly, large oval ears and a black bushy tail. They do not build nests and the female usually has one pouch young. Brushtails also have a love of (human) food! The young will stay with its mother until dispersal age around 12-18 months.

They often just miss holding the snake while going down the stairs. Peter added that this beautiful tree snake has many friends which hang around the back door, in the garden, in trees, and on the roof of the house, often disturbing their Lhasa Apso dog.

T his week Louisa has emailed with some email-related

questions, as follows. “How can I send out one email

to over 300 email addresses in one go through Outlook?”

In a nutshell, you don’t. Whilst later versions of Outlook theoretically can handle that many addresses, your ISP probably won’t let you do that many. If you regularly need to send out emails to 300+ recipients (i.e. monthly newsletters, promotions to customers etc.) then you should use a third party web-based Email Marketing System. Easy and cheap, I send mine out to 600+ recipients and it costs $15 per go. If you really want to do it all yourself then you should get a version of MS Office with MS Business Contact Manager (BCM), which has an email marketing section which lets you successfully mail out from within BCM (which is part of Outlook).

it is fixed, so that whoever opens it, it will appear the same and not some gobbledegook?”

You can’t. Unfortunately as senders we have no control over the settings of the person at the other end. If, for example, they have set to read their email in plain text, then all the fancy formatting and pictures and email addresses and web links we use in our email will come out as gibberish at the other end. Most people read email in HTML now so it should be ok for the majority, but there’s nothing you can do about the rest.

If using Outlook, you need to save the picture you want onto your computer, then go into the signature editing section in Outlook, edit the signature, right click where you want the picture and choose Insert Image.

As the centenary celebrations for the Discover Eumundi building approaches… a little of its past taken from the Methodist Leader – 5 January 1912:

“The opening ceremony took place on Saturday, 2 December 2 (1911). A number of friends came by train from places along the line. The day was very hot and sultry. At 3pm Rev WS Bath invited Rev Dr Youngman DD to unlock the door and declare the building open.

This being done, a dedicatory service was held both ministers taking part, with a good congregation. A tea-meeting and concert was afterwards held in the hall nearby, the tea-meeting was the �rst of its kind to be held in the town.

On Sunday Dr. Youngman conducted three services. The weather had changed to mist and drizzle, a�ecting the size of the congregation, but not their heartiness.”

big crowd on a warm spring day. The Green Horses, Green Rider theme with no nomination fee or prize money was a great success. Half of the profit of the day will be donated to Riding for Disabled to support their land acquisition campaign.
