Student Parliament News

Student Parliament held its first official parliamentary session last Monday. This was a great way to launch Education Week and further develop the idea of ‘student voice’ at Bega Valley Public School. We had an official start to the meeting with the Sergeant at Arms Jason and a Treasurer’s Report from Grace. Hayden the secretary of the Parliament took minutes for our meeting. After that, supported by Mrs Nugent and Mr Bennett the students developed an action plan for some of the initiatives that we would like to see at school. We look forward to introducing these initiatives over the coming weeks.

From the Music Room

In Education Week the BVPS Band presented a collaborative workshop for all students. Classes joined the band singing, dancing and playing percussion along with the band. It was a very enjoyable experience for everyone & a terrific learning experience.

Kindergarten are developing a soundscape with Boomwackers and other un-tuned percussion instruments.

Stage 1 & Stage 3 are learning to play ukulele.

Class News 3/4 C

In the Library, 3/4C have been focusing on Digital Art and Coding Ozbots. Year 3 and 4 have been taking turns for a fortnight to produce Toucans in ArtRage, using a variety of digital media like glitter, paint rollers, brushes, crayons and pencils. In Ozbots we have been figuring out the role that colours play in coding on a digital path. We have found out that Ozbots can slow down, speed up, do a u turn and follow a path. We have also enjoyed learning to touch type on the laptops and computers and will be using different applications in the coming week to produce a digital Golden Ticket or Confectionary from Willy Wonka in our Stage 2 Literacy Unit Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Class News K/1 B

We have had a busy start to Term 3 in K/1B. We have kicked off K-2 Maths groups, focusing on addition and subtraction skills. This is a great chance for us to participate in some targeted learning and also mingle with our friends in other classes.

We really enjoyed Education Week, in particular the Create and Innovate activities and watching the ‘Best of Film By…’ films made by other students around the state. Some made us laugh, others prompted some interesting discussion. The students are keen to try some movie making themselves!

It has been fantastic to reconnect with our Buddies in 5/6R over the past few weeks. We get together on a Friday to read together or play outdoor games - a great chance to promote positive relationships across the school.

Class News 5/6 R

We would like to warmly welcome Ms Amanda Rose from Wollongong University, who will be with our class for the next six weeks as she completes her teacher training. Mrs Roberts will be with the class as well and we are looking forward to showing her the amazing tal-ents we have in our class. We have been making some wonderful progress in spelling with Mrs Fay very impressed how our under-standing of phonology, orthography and morphology has developed since the beginning of the year. This ex-plicit spelling program will help students spell familiar and unfamiliar words when composing texts. Our class novel this term is “Boy Overboard” by Morris Gleitzman. All students are engaging in a positive man-ner when listening to Mrs Roberts read the story, as well as completing journal entries from the perspective of the main characters “Jamal” and “Bibi”. In Maths we are focusing on addition, subtraction, time and money. It is pleasing to observe students demon-strating the school values when participating in numer-acy group rotations. Our STEM program with Bega High School is continuing every Monday afternoon, with a power walk up to the high school and then innovative lessons designed by Mr Banks. We had a very important safety talk and are looking forward to using some of the specialized equip-ment in the workshop at the high school. It was great to see the class trying their best at our school Cross Country Carnival last Friday. A special mention to Alinka and Flynn in our class finishing first in their age groups. The class is looking forward to resum-ing stage fitness this term. We have been completing our daily fitness challenge card for the NSW Premier's Sporting Challenge. There have been many wonderful opportunities for students in 5/6R this term!

Musical Instruments

This year for Innovate and Educate day, I asked students to investigate the question, “How do musical instruments create sounds?” by creating their own home-made instruments. The students could choose from making paddle-pop stick harmonicas, paper plate tambourines or cardboard box guitars. The harmonicas proved very popular! All the students had a great time creating instruments and experimenting with the different sounds they could make. Ronni from kindergarten even told me “This is the best day ever!”

.

Never Ending Card

The never ending card workshop was a terrific learning experience for our students. Never ending cards are like the Rubik's Cube of paper craft – lots of problem solving, measuring, forward planning and creativity. We added text with messages of love and appreciation that were circular. There was no full stop, the text went around and around with the folding and unfolding of the card.

Straw Bridges

Yesterday a group of 5/6 students had a great time

making straw bridges. We were able to explore some

elements of engineering that is used to create different

structures. Using only straws, blu tac and masking tape

the challenge was to make a bridge that could span 1m

and support weight. Students designed, created and

adjusted bridge to match the specifics of the challenge.

All groups were successful in designing bridges that

spanned 1m and all the straw bridges supported the

weight of at least 5 magazines with the record being

19 magazines.

Domino Challenge

Mrs Roberts was impressed how well the domino crew used their creativity, concentration and hand eye coordination to take chain reaction building to a whole new level. Using blocks, boxes, ping pong balls and even gymnastics beams the students created bridges, steps and ramps in their challenge. Falling towers was a very popular activity with the students building rows of carefully stacked dominoes to create towers. A great effort by all the students in the group!

Model House Building

Students in this group took inspiration from ‘The Three Little Pigs’ to create structures that were strong enough to withstand being blown over by the Big Bad Wolf. We made predictions as to which materials would be the strongest and which we thought would be easy to blow over. Students discovered that the heavier structures e.g. paddle pop sticks or blocks were the strongest to build with. Although, plenty of sticky tape also helps! Paper and straws were the most difficult to build a strong structure with. It was great to see students work through the trial and error process, making modifications if their structure was easily blown over.

Flight Challenge

The take flight challenge required students to firstly consider the elements of flight and draw a plan of what their flying machine may look like with a labelled picture of what resources they will need. Working in small groups or individually, students then started the construction side of the experiment. It was great to watch all students working hard to have their finished product complete in the timeframe. They were able to test their designs before seeing how far or high their flying machines could go.

Science Magic

The Science Magic group consisted of students from

Stage 2 and 3. The students participated in a wide range

of experiments using balloons. The group investigated

concepts such as surface tension, distributive pressure,

static electricity and chemical reactions. The

student's predicted possible outcomes, discussed

their observations, hypothesised and formed

conclusions. We all had a great time with the more than

occasional balloon burst keeping us on our toes. Who

said balloons were just for parties?

Flight Challenge

During our activity, we explored forces and asked ourselves the question, how and why does a paper plane

fly? Firstly, students designed and made their own paper plane, we tested these and discussed what elements

made the planes fly successfully or unsuccessfully. We talked about what we thought could make the plane

fly further. We then followed instructions on how to make a simple paper plane. We then tested these de-

signs and compared the success of our own design to the second design. We analysed and discussed what

made a successful paper plane fly the furthest. Blaze from Year 2 thought that it was important that the wings

of the plane were long and smooth so that the air could lift the plane. Jordan from Year 2 thought it was im-

portant that the front of the plane was sharp so that it could glide through the air easily. We also learnt about

forces and talked about gravity, lift and thrust. We had a lot of fun designing, making and testing.

Innovate and Create

In Mrs Barne’s room the K-2 student groups had to design a marble maze in a box for a toy shop. It had to fit into a rectangle box to sit on a shelf. First we watched a clip about how to make a maze and discussed what a maze had to incorporate in its design. The maze had to have a start and an exit, the marble could go over, around or under something and it had to be interesting or challenging. Next the students had time to design their maze and plan the steps to follow, then they had to create, test and improve their design. We used a cardboard lid, paper rolls, craft sticks and sticky tap

Spinning Colours

Students from Kindergarten to Year 2 engaged in a

fun activity that combined the scientific concepts of

colour theory and centrifugal force. Placing paper in

the bottom of a salad spinner then adding paint in

the three primary colours, students then spun the

salad spinner to create patterns and new colours.

Students noted that each pattern created was

different and that the new colours created included

a variety of primary and secondary colours, straws,

small containers and a marble

How to make an engaging movie?

Fourteen keen young movie makers embarked on a

journey to make an exciting movie. We explored

what makes a good movie and the group decided

there were so many components to making a

movie exciting and engaging. We needed to start

somewhere, and so began the task of writing a

story. Each group created a storyboard with their

story ideas, camera shots and angles and sound

effects ready to start filming. We played around

with a green screen and got very excited about the

opportunities that it will provide for sets and

special effects. Watch this space as we continue on

the movie making journey and the release of Bega

Valley Public Productions first set of short films

later in the term!
