eGEMS
A Dedicated Web Based System for Ground Water Data Processing
Analysis and Storage
GEMS - Background During the Hydrology Project, Phase I, CGWB
developed a Dedicated Ground Water Estimation and Management System (GEMS) Software Data entry & data validation Processing and analysis
GEMS was developed in a client server environment Integration of GIS, database & other software It handled a large amount of data,
Originating from about 25,000 manually monitored wells, About 6000 wells equipped with automatic water level recorders Exploratory wells etc.
GEMS - Issues Required Complex installation and configuration
High Database and of IT Expertise by the users.
Dependencies on specific hardware, system software and operating system.
Difficulty in upgrading or changing modular components. Upgrading GIS software to current version of MapInfo.
Complexity in import and integration of data from Different instances of GEMS Other data management systems.
Limited installation not possible as per user levels Full range of GEMS functionality need to be installed Wide range of options for small office user
eGEMS - Concept During Hydrology Project Phase II- It was
envisaged to replicate the existing GEMS capabilities into a internet based Platform independent Highly reliable Lesser user intervention
For CGWB and 13 participating Hydrology Project Phase –II State Ground Water Agencies
The Contract for the development of eGEMS application has been awarded to M/S TCS, Gurgoan
eGEMS - Outlines
Internet based platform independent system
Client access from web browsers No software requirement at user end – Web
browser and internet access needed Single, centralized data store for
databases. Scalable to user requirement

Roll Out
Future Road Map
• Enhancing User Base across India• Integration of eGEMS service with Mobile GIS
• Providing online /offline data entry provision• Location based services
• Integration with telemetric and other online data systems
• Providing Citizen interface
Thank You
A step towards……. Sharing & Caring for
Sustainable Ground Water Management
Implementation Issues
• Procurement of Hardware• Delayed procurement• BSNL data center hiring proposal
• Preparedness of States – Data migration/availability• Non-Availability of existing legacy data in desired formats• Non- Availability of GIS data in the new States e.g Punjab, Goa, Pudducherry
etc• Non uniformity of data standards across states
• Expected to spill over beyond Feb 2014.• Post project maintenance payments
