The Modest Late 20th Century Improvement

• Centralized distribution schemes – Based on large data centers such as the World Data Centers (WDC):– Require continuous support for the data

acquisition, storage, and distribution– Submission of data remains voluntary– Collected data have to be suitable for submission

to the “central data base”; e.g., the WDCs only accept absolute geomagnetic measurements

• If you want data from more than one discipline data center, you are back to the ‘old’ way.

There are many implementations of the Late 20th Century data

architecture and more and more 21st century architecture implementations

available for isolated sub-disciplines.

• They are called by many different names – Virtual Observatories, Data and Information Networks, ---

• The next few pages list a few implementations.• Each community is very pleased with the significant advances they have

made!• Interoperability between these implementations is, at best, an afterthought.

1.1 The purpose of the Strategic Alliance between the Electronic Geophysical Year (eGY) and the International Year of Planet Earth is to facilitate collaborative scientific research and development and other programs of the highest international standing in the interests of both parties.

1.2 The Alliance relies on eGY and the International Year working together with guiding principles:

Openness, co-operation, understanding and trust. Equitable apportionment of risk and reward. High degree of innovation. . .

A draft resolution invites UNESCO’s Director General to support all efforts leading to the United Nations General Assembly to declare 2007 the International Year of Planet Earth
