~ First edition. Publications spéciales, fondées par sa Majesté le RoiFouad Ier, continuées sous les auspices de sa Majesté le Roi FaroukIer. The inscriptions called “graffiti” today are mostly an unofficialremembrance, a self-presentation, more often connected withvandalism than with art or socially respected self-expression.Visitors to the pyramids left Greek, Latin, and Arabic graffiti, oftennext to those from Pharaonic times. To these layers of humanpresence, modern tourist graffiti, starting with the 16th centuryonwards, and reaching the peak of their use in 19th century, wasadded. “It is certain that tourists are gradually spoiling themonuments of Egypt by writing their names on them. Persons oftaste are irritated when they come across them, and the directors ofthe antiquities exhaust themselves in searching for hard words inwhich to censure such practices. And yet, if the archaeologists andhistorians of today would reflect a little, what fine fellows theseinscriptions-makers are, and what an amount of ingenious workthey are preparing for the students of the future.” (Gaston Maspero:“New Light on Ancient Egypt”).

Charles Piazzi Smyth (1819-1900) was astronomer-royal for Scotland, professor of practical astronomy at the Universityof Edinburgh, fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and of theRoyal Societies of London and Edinburgh. Smyth was heavilyinfluenced by pyramid theorist John Taylor who theorized that theGreat Pyramid was planned and the building supervised by thebiblical Noah. Refused a grant by the Royal Society, Smyth went onan expedition to Egypt in order to accurately measure every surface, dimension, and aspect of the Great Pyramid. He subsequentlypublished his book “Our Inheritance in the Great Pyramid” (1864).He claimed that the measurements he obtained from the GreatPyramid of Giza indicated a unit of length, the pyramid inch, a God-given measure handed down through the centuries from the time ofIsrael. His conclusion was that the architects of the pyramid couldonly have been directed by the hand of God. With manuscriptinscription and contemporary bookplate onto upper wrap.
