Liquid Level Switchliquiphant M FTL 51 C
Level limit switch for all liquids, with highcorrosion-resistant coating, suitable for usein hazardous areas
Features and benefits• Large selection of corrosion-resistant
materials for wetted parts coatings, ideally suited to the process
• Welded, gas-tight bushing available,2nd line of defense even if sensorfails
• Large selection of flanges foruniversal process adaptability
• Compact fork, easy installation intight areas
• Wide variety of electronics, e.g.DPDT relay, 4 to 20 mA switch, PFMsignal output, NAMUR and transistor
• No calibration: quick, low-coststart-up
• No mechanical moving parts: nomaintenance, no wear, economicallong operating life
• Monitoring of fork damage:guaranteed operation
ApplicationThe Liquiphant M is a level limit switch foruse in all liquids• With temperatures between -40° and
+300°F (-40° to +150°C)• Pressures up to 580 psi (40 bar)• Viscosity up to 10,000 cP• Density from 0.5 SGUThe function is not affected by flow, turbulence, bubbles, foam, vibration, bulksolids content or buildup. The LiquiphantM is thus the ideal replacement for floatswitches, gap switches, capacitance andother technologies.
Versatile SelectionThe coating of all sensor wetted parts(process connection, extension pipe andfork) is made of enamel or syntheticmaterial to ensure compatibility in highlycorresive liquids.
The Liquiphant M includes versions foruse in hazardous areas, includingintrinsically safe and explosion-proofinstallations.

The Liquiphant M, a new generation of frequency shift tuning forks, brings greaterapplication flexibility and reliability to level switch users, especially in liquid applicationswhere highly corrosive chemicals are present. The Liquiphant M is not affected by gasbubbles, turbulence, foam, vibration, buildup, high viscosity, or bulk solids buildup.
The FTL 51C uses frequency shift technology for limit detection. The forks vibrate attheir resonant frequency. This frequency changes when covered or uncovered by theliquid material, which activates a limit switch. The frequency shift of the fork is moni-tored, an alarm state is indicated if there is fork corrosion or damage. Loss of powerand piezo drive failure is also alarmed.
Maximum or minimum level detection in tanks, vessels or piping containing all types ofhot or cold liquids, also in explosion hazardous areas. The Liquiphant M can bemounted at any orientation. In applications where room allows, the unit can beextended into the vessel (up to 115”) with an extension tube. The FTL 51 C is avail-able with coatings for wetted parts and is mainly applied in applications with corrosivefluids.

The load can be an indicator light or remote relay. When switch is in the “OFF” state, atrickle current flows (up to 3.8 mA), not enough to light an indicator or actuate a relay. When the switch is in the “ON” state, current flow increases to a level that can activatea remote relay or light a filament bulb.

Operating conditions (installation)
Mounting, switchpoint location Switchpoints on the sensor depend on the mounting position, with reference to water(density 1 SGU at 73°F, 0 psi). Because the Liquiphant sensor requires no calibration, the switchpoint is determined by the position of the tuning fork.
NOTE: The switchpoints of the Liquiphant M are at different positions compared to theprevious compact Liquiphant II (FTL 360, FTL 365, FDL 30 and FDL 35).

Mounting, high viscosity liquids Examples of mounting with regard to the viscosity of the liquid are shown below. Theoptimum mounting position, even with high viscosity liquids is vertical, from the vesseltop, or horizontal (flush mounted from the side).
NOTE: Horizontal mounting, position the forks so that the narrow edge of the tines arevertical. This ensures that the liquid can run off easily.

Mounting, low viscosity fluids Mounting positions for low viscosity liquids (up to 2000 cP) are shown below. The FTL51 C is nozzle mounted as shown.

Mounting, pipe installation The FTL 51 C can be mounted into pipe lines 2” and larger.
NOTE: Ensure narrow edge of forks is parallel with the pipe walls to avoid blockage ofthe flowing material.
To maintain optimum performance, the liquid should have velocities up to 16 ft/s(5 m/s) with a viscosity of 1 cP and a density of 1 SGU.
Mounting, extension tubes When mounting an extended version ofthe FTL 51 C in fluids which may applyhigh lateral forces, the extension pipeshould be supported (such as an internalextension support pipe). Ensure theinternal support does not hinder theoperation of the forks.
Ensure there is adequate space betweenoutside walls or ceilings and the vesselmounting point if ordering theFTL 51 C with extension tube. Extensiontubes up to 20” (500 mm) can bemounted at any orientation. Extensiontubes over 20” and up to 115” must bemounted vertically.

Temperture spacer / pressure tightfeed through
Temperature spacerTemperature spacer provides sealedinsulation of the vessel and normalambient temperatures for the housing byextending the electronics (5.5”) from themounting flange.
Pressure tight feed throughSecond line of defense protects theelectronics housing from vessel pres-sures up to 580 psi (40 bar) should thesensor become damaged. The feedthrough also provides sealed insulation ofthe vessel and normal ambient tempera-tures for the electronics housing.
