Have you ever tried to settle a money dispute or an inheritance issue? Inheritance disputes are rarely easy to resolve, especially when the people involved can't agree on who should get what and who should get the most. Why did Jesus refuse to settle an inheritance dispute between two brothers in today’s gospel? Perhaps he saw that the heart of the issue was not justice or fairness but rather greed and possessiveness. This is what the parable of the foolish rich man points out in the second part of our gospel! Why does Jesus call this wealthy landowner a fool? Jesus does not fault the rich man for being rich. There is nothing wrong with that. Rather he faults him for his egoism and selfishness – it's mine, all mine, and no one else's. The rich fool had lost the capacity to be concerned for others. His life was consumed with his possessions and his only interests were in himself. Over and over again Pope Francis has spoken on the social message of the gospel which challenges each of us to do what we can for the needy in our society. Like the parable in today’s gospel, Pope Francis continues to chal- lenge us to look beyond ourselves to the needs of those around us. The gospel reminds us that the more we give up, the more room God has to step in and fill the emptiness that ex- ists in each of our hearts. The more we tear down the grain bins of our lives, the richer we will be in faith. So, in today’s gospel Jesus probes our heart. He asks – where is your treasure? Treasure has a special con- nection to the heart, the place of desire and longing, the place of will and focus. The thing we most set our heart on is our highest treasure. This challenges each of us to make sure our heart (and perhaps our wallet) is in the right place. That is a lot to think about during the week! Srs. Lourdes and Adelaida are getting a much needed vacation for the next few weeks. We pray that they may have a wonderful, relaxing time and come back re-energized to continue the good work they do! One of the wonderful things about ministering here at St Simon Stock/St Joseph is to witness the dedication of the parish staff and many lay people who truly help to make God’s presence known in the lives of many people! May we continue to build up the kingdom of God here in this wonderful parish! ***************************************************************************************************************************** Alguna vez ha tratado de resolver una disputa monetaria o un problema de herencia? Las disputas de herencia rara vez son fáciles de resolver, especialmente cuando las personas involucradas no pueden ponerse de acuerdo sobre quién debe obtener qué y quién debe obtener más. ¿Por qué Jesús se negó a resolver una disputa de herencia entre dos hermanos en el evangelio de hoy? Quizás vio que el corazón del problema no era la justicia o la imparcialidad sino la codicia y la posesividad. ¡Esto es lo que la parábola del hombre rico necio señala en la segunda parte de nuestro evangelio! ¿Por qué Jesús llama tonto a este rico terrateniente? Jesús no culpa al rico por ser rico. No hay nada de malo en ello. Más bien, le culpa por su egoísmo: es mío, todo mío y de nadie más. El rico tonto había perdido la capacidad de preocu- parse por los demás. Su vida fue consumida con sus posesiones y sus únicos intereses estaban en sí mismo. Una y otra vez, el Papa Francisco ha hablado sobre el mensaje social del evangelio que nos desafía a cada uno de nosotros a hacer lo que podamos por los necesitados de nuestra sociedad. Como la parábola en el evangelio de hoy, el Papa Francisco continúa desafiándonos a mirar más allá de las necesidades de quienes nos rodean. El evangelio nos recuerda que cuanto más nos damos por vencidos, más espacio tiene Dios para intervenir y llenar el vacío que existe en cada uno de nuestros corazones. Cuanto más derribemos los compartimientos de grano de nuestras vidas, más ricos seremos en la fe. Entonces, en el evangelio de hoy, Jesús mira adentro de nuestro corazón. Él pregunta: ¿dónde está tu tesoro? El tesoro tiene una conexión especial con el corazón, el lugar del deseo y el anhelo, el lugar de la voluntad y el enfo- que. Lo que más ponemos nuestro corazón es nuestro mayor tesoro. Esto nos desafía a cada uno de nosotros a asegu- rarnos de que nuestro corazón (y quizás nuestra billetera) esté en el lugar correcto. ¡Eso es mucho para pensar durante la semana! Srs. Lourdes y Adelaida tendrán unas vacaciones muy necesarias para las próximas semanas. ¡Oramos para que tengan un tiempo maravilloso y relajante y vuelvan con energía para continuar el buen trabajo que hacen! ¡Una de las cosas maravillosas de ministrar aquí en San Simón Stock / San José es ser testigo de la dedicación del personal de la parroquia y de muchos laicos que realmente ayudan a hacer que la presencia de Dios sea conocida en la vida de muchas personas! ¡Que continuemos construyendo el reino de Dios aquí en esta maravillosa parroquia!
