Partners in Charity 2017 COMMITMENT WEEKEND WILL TAKE PLACE ON MARCH 18 & 19. We hope that you will renew your support of our Parish & Diocese this year and prayerfully consider a gift to our annual

Partners in Charity Appeal. Every gift makes a difference as we strive to meet our 2017 goal of

$33,000.

From its earliest days, the Church has urged the Baptized & the

Catechumens to observe the threefold discipline of fasting, alms giving, and prayers in preparation for the celebration of Easter, April 16

th. Failure

to observe any penitential days must be considered serious. During Lent the Church encourages attendance at daily Mass; extra devotions, self-

imposed times of fasting & sacrifice; & generosity to local, national, and world-wide programs of giving.

Lent begins on Wednesday, March 1st. I invite and encourage you to participate in a variety of activities that will help you to

keep a Holy Lent:

Ash Wednesday – March 1st Plan to join us at one of three opportunities to receive Ashes:

8:00 am Mass @ SM 4:00 pm Brief Prayer Service @ SH 6:00 pm Mass at SH

The imposition of Ashes at Mass will take place following the Gospel & homily. I will remain in SH Church until 7:30 pm for those returning late from work.

Lenten Way of the Cross We’ll pray the Stations on Fridays during Lent, alternating times & locations:

March 3 – 3 pm @ SM March 10 – 6 pm @ SH followed by Soup Supper in Dugan Hall March 17 – 3 pm @ SM March 24 – 6 pm @ SH followed by Soup Supper March 31 – 3 pm @ SM April 7 – 6 pm @ SH followed by Soup Supper

We’ll use a different meditation text each week as we pray for about 45 minutes.

Lenten Confessions In addition to the usual 3:15 to 4 pm on Saturday @ SM in Brookfield, you may receive the sacrament of Reconciliation on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 7 pm at SH in W. Brookfield beginning on March 7

th.

Lenten Reading Free copies of the Lenten issue of The Word Among Us can be found at both churches this weekend. Please take one home to read throughout Lent.

Guidelines for Lenten Fast & Abstinence Abstinence from meat is observed by all Catholics 14 years and older

on Ash Wednesday (3/1), Good Friday (4/14), & all the Fridays of Lent.

Fasting is observed by all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 on Ash Wednesday & Good Friday. On Fast Days, one full meal and two smaller meals to maintain strength are permitted. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

Fr. Chet

Hunger knows no season. There is always a need for

food to feed hungry families. Once again this year, the Knights of Columbus Council 11080 is sponsoring

“40 CANS FOR LENT” Our goal is for each council member and each

parishioner to contribute one item of non-perishable food or other household goods per day during the 40 days of Lent. The items can be dropped off at either

church on the weekend when you come to Mass. Suggested items include (but are not limited to):

canned & dry pastas; canned juices, fruits, veggies; canned meats i.e., chicken, tuna, Spam, etc.; soup & soup mixes; pickles, relish, ketchup, mustard & other

condiments; rice; beans; dish & laundry detergent; toothpaste; toilet tissue; paper towels.

Items will be divided equally between the Brookfield Ecumenical Food Pantry & the West Brookfield

Sharing Cupboard. Thank you and God bless you!

Together, We “CAN” Fight Hunger!
