Lots of exciting entertainment is planned for this year’s festival with almost half of the events FREE over the 10 days and we eagerly anticipate being hosted in the outstanding new VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art and George Bernard Shaw Theatre.

This year we celebrate with a large scale 30 year retrospective visual art exhibition in the galleries of VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art curated by Paddy McGovern featuring the crème de la crème of artists who have exhibited over the years at Éigse. We really want to give you a feeling of festival spirit around the town and county, whether you attend a workshop in comedy / clown performance, view one of the film shorts in the cinema or you are inspired to dance a jig at the open air céilí with the Tulla Céilí Band, Éigse is your festival and we’d like you to enjoy it.

Of priority to the festival is the showcasing of Carlow artists and they feature throughout the festival programme, side by side with national and international performers and artists, providing them with presentation opportunities to further their careers and contacts at such a crucial economic time. Carlow plays well above its size in terms of the quantity and quality of its artistic talent, some of which is presented at the 2010 festival.

As we said above, it’s YOUR FESTIVAL so it’s YOURS TO ENJOY!Is féile pobail í, bain taitneamh aisti!

Ionad/ LOCATION: VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art

This year’s Visual Arts programme sees a change of venue and format. The festival’s ocial exhibitions will be in a single venue, and what a venue it is: VISUAL, Carlow Centre for Contemporary Art.

Éigse will celebrate its thirty-one years of great art shows with a huge group exhibition of work by artists who made Carlow a major venue for all art lovers.

These will range from artists who show in major international galleries to artists from the Carlow area some of whom have shown annually since the festival was launched in 1979.

William Crozier and Peter Howson were the rst overseas artists to commit to Éigse, showing in 1992. They will be particularly welcomed. Major gures from London’s Royal Academy will include Gillian Ayres, John Hoyland, Sonia Lawson, Hughie O’Donoghue, Barbara Rae and Anthony Whishaw. David Blackburn’s work has been praised by major critics such as Kenneth Clark, Peter Fuller & Sr. Wendy Beckett while Shani Rhys James has won Europe’s most valuable painting prize, the Jerwood, since her last appearance at Éigse 2000. Sean Henry’s large-scale painted steel gures were among the most popular works shown in Carlow while Alex Calinescu, Will Maclean and painter David Tress will also feature prominently. Éigse was the rst venue in Ireland to show the work of each of these artists. Sean HenryWilliam Crozier

VISUAL ARTS PROGRAMMEin the world, occupies the Digital Gallery while French video installation artist François-Xavier Courrèges will also feature.

The remaining line-up of artists includes: Adam Bohanna, John A. Brennan, Ml. Canning, Comhghall Casey, Elizabeth Cope, Colin Crotty, Hillary Elmes, Simon English, Denis Farrell, Bridget Flannery, Marie Foley, Paul Funge, Martin Gale, Brian Garvey, Trevor Geoghegan, Marie Hanlon, Eddie Kennedy, Mike Fitzharris, Bob Lynn, Alice Maher, Paul Mosse Stephen McKenna, Bobby Mclean, Tadhg McSweeney, Mick O’Dea, David Quinn, John Noel Smith, Maighread Tobin, Ger Sweeney & Keith Wilson.

While Éigse has gained a national reputation for great art shows, its strength was built on the strong input and involvement of Carlow artists over the years and Carlow is strongly represented by, Jim Behan, Beverly Carbery, Caoimhín Ó Néill, Eilis O’Neill and Ellen Walshe, illustrator Derry Dillon, ceramicist Michelle Dempsey and that master craftsman, John Kemp.

Éigse without some younger emerging artists would not really be Éigse at all and

Sheenagh Geoghegan and Stephen Murphy will y the ag for the rising generation of great young Irish artists.

All in all, a very special line-up indeed - and all in the spectacular setting of Ireland’s newest great art space, VISUAL.

RinceDANCE

World première - Dancers’ Dialogue (Night time outdoor performance)

This commission unravels the tones, rhythm, language, syntax and thoughts expressed as speech and the non-verbal communication of dance. The piece is inspired by the words of the great dance icon, Isadora Duncan, expressing dance as the ‘Luminous manifestation of the soul’. Here both verbal and non-verbal meet to allow an insight into dance - the practitioners and audience share the shapes, sounds, moves and thoughts of two differing origins fusing the ‘lingo’ of dancers and dance genres that translates a ‘Dancers’ Dialogue’.

Padraig MacAodha (Patrick McHugh), a Laois based choreographer and dancer, while rooted in traditional Irish dance, has a keen sense of exploration for symbiotic dance relationships and collaborates with max.IMEALL, a new Edinburgh-based contemporary dance company that “aim forward, while unafraid to look back”.

This performance, commissioned by Éigse, is a site-specific choreography exploring and showcasing the night façade of the new VISUAL Centre for Contemporary Art and George Bernard Shaw Theatre.

The Parting Glass By Dermot BolgerPresented by axis: Ballymun Directed by: Mark O’ Brien, starring Ray Yeates

15

Where were you when Ireland’s World Cup dreams were dashed? Shot through with caustic wit and sharp home truths, The Parting Glass is an examination of Ireland over the past two decades - and Thierry Henry's left hand! In 1990 Dermot Bolger’s play In High Germany captured the mood of a pre Celtic Tiger generation forced to emigrate due to economic necessity. It used the motif of soccer and the Irish team’s success in Euro ‘88 to tell the life stories of three friends up to the point where they emigrate from an Ireland on the edge of financial collapse. Twenty years on, Eoin is re-united with old friends in Stade de France on Nov. 18th 2009 for the World Cup play-off.

The Parting Glass is an odyssey for the foreignness of the Ireland that emerged in Eoin’s absence, the boom and bust story of the nation and the story of a man, stopping to make sense of his life, to try and fathom his place as an exile and to take stock of his future.

Common TongueCommon Tongue is a unique trio bringing together sean-nós singer Lorcán Mac Mathúna, improvising saxophonist Cathal Roche and composer Ian Wilson on live electronics. With performances based around new melodies put to traditional songs, the trio interprets Irish standards drawing on aspects of jazz and electronica to re-contextualize the sean-nós singing.

Ian is a member of Aosdána and is also Director of the Sligo New Music Festival. Lorcán’s music and singing was primarily passed onto him by his father, the well respected sean-nós singer and flute player, Séamus Mac Mathúna. Cathal is a composer-performer specialising in solo saxophone and has performed with leading ensembles and performers including the Kai Big Band, Fuzzy Logic Ensemble, ICC Ensemble, Hugh Tinney and RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet.

Initiated by Carlow Local Authorities Arts Office, playwright Bryan Delaney has been Carlow Writer-in-Residence since 2006 with the goal of developing local writing talent for the stage. This event is a culmination of that residency and provides a unique opportunity to hear samplesof several short 10 to 15 minute plays from local playwrights in the form of public readings by professional actors.

The readings will be directed by Tom Creed (Rough Magic, Dublin) and will be followed by an audience talkback with the director, actors and the playwrights themselves. This is a rare glimpse behind the scenes into the process of writing and presenting a new play for performance and is the first event of its kind in Carlow.

Andrew MaxwellStand-up comedian Andrew Maxwell is a familiar face on Irish and UK television having appeared on The Panel (RTE), Have I Got News For You (BBC), Mock of the Week (BBC) and Celebrity Juice (ITV) among others. He has won and been nominated for several awards including an Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show, a Time Out Live Award in the category of Best Stand-up, a Loaded Magazine Award for best stand-up

and Chortle Award for best contribution to the live comedy circuit. He was also recently voted Best Irish Comedian by the public at the Entertainment.ie awards. He embarks on a major UK tour in April and manages to squeeze in this Carlow date during his busy touring schedule.

“One of the best comics around... A consummate raconteur” TIME OUT

Drolls were short comical sketches that originated during the Puritan interregnum in England. With the closure of theatres, actors were left without any way of plying their art or earning a living, so they “borrowed” scenes from well-known plays of the time, added dancing and other entertainments and performed these, sometimes illegally, to make money.

Carlow University Theatre (CUT) has been in existence for 18 years and has accounted for more than 80 productions in Pittsburgh city. For Spring 2010, Steve Fatla (Founder and Producer of CUT) and Jay Keenan (Producer of Duquesne Red Masquers, Duquesne University) created a course that encompassed the study of Irish Theatre. The connection with its sister college in Ireland (St. Patrick’s College, Carlow) enables their international debut performances at Éigse.

21Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club

“The arrangements are full of lovely little touches: flourishes of Spanish guitar, bursts of swinging horns. It’s like Tom Waits in a good mood, or maybe Leonard Cohen doing Dean Martin backed by an Irish showband. There are a lot of obvious influences, but the Mudbug Club embrace them in such good spirit it is impossible not to be carried along by their enthusiasm”. Neil McCormick, The Telegraph (UK).

Support by Sugar FactoryThe Sugar Factory caused quite a stir when they released their EP titled 'PULP' with a sold out launch at the GB Shaw theatre in February. Carlow singer-songwriters, Gala Hutton and Eric Butler teamed up with violinist Michéal Bolton to form the band in January joined by Eamon Burke on Drums and Mark Condron on Bass. Sugar Factory are currently recording their debut album. www.sugarfactory.ie

What do you get when you cross Tom Waits with a Circus Showband, Jacques Brel with Mink DeVille or when you lock Dr John, Dean Martin and The Fun Lovin’ Criminals in the same room?

The answer my friends, is Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club, the most eclectic bunch of musical chameleons ever to share a stage, all guided by the beatific gaze of chief Mudbug, Mr. Jerry Fish himself.

FESTIVAL CLUB: Preachers SonPreachers Son is a bit Bowie, ska, rock, blues, country, punk, croon, Mars (God of War). It's kind of a Led Zeppelin-Leonard Cohen crossover / Johnny Cash doing Talking Heads kinda thing. Brian Hogan, the front man, is chief bass player of KÍLA with whom he travels the world. With KÍLA he has won a Meteor award, earned a platinum, gold discs and achieved a number-one-hit

alongside U2 and The Dubliners with The Ballad Of Ronnie Drew. He has played with George Hamilton IV, Bono, U2, Sinéad O’Connor, The Dubliners, Paul Brady, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Glenn Hansard and The Cheeky Girls. Together with drummer Emmaline Duffy-Fallon (previously of Engine Alley) and Jose Carlos Anselmo Flores (Seville) on bass the new line up can include guests from The Black Velvet Band to The Coronas.

To start the traditional music weekend with a bang, the infamous trad music DJ, Ollie Mullooly, will have the floor boards hopping ‘til the small hours! Having started at the Ennis Trad Festival many moons ago the Trad Disco has grown in popularity and will be the highlight of the Éigse festival. If you thought traditional music was boring, drop in to the Trad Disco and be astounded by the madness of a disco of traditional music! Folk band Róisín Dubh begin the night from 9pm.

WOODROAD: A concert of laid-back Brazilian lullabies, fiery tangos, romantic Barrios and riotous Klezmer. Having left his mark on the worlds of classical, jazz and Brazilian folk music, Laurindo Almeida thought nothing of juxtaposing these styles. Astor Piazzolla also bridged traditions and brought on himself the scorn of his fellow Argentineans, when he incorporated elements of baroque music and jazz into his nuevo tango. This is a concert in homage to two great 20th century South American musicians, and their iconoclastic visions.

A once-off Irish traditional music concert in association with Carlow Folk Club featuring: Derek Hickey (button accordion), Angelina Carberry (banjo), Liam Flannigan (fiddle) & Mick Conneely (fiddle & bouzouki)

This is a rare concert and combination of exceptionally high quality traditional musicians that you don’t hear in concert setting every day. Limerick accordion maestro, Derek Hickey, has a reputation for being one of Ireland’s leading accordionists having toured and recorded with De Dannan for 8 years until they disbanded in 2003 and a member of Arcady prior to that. His long awaited solo album is due for release shortly which is music to the ears of his many admirers. Derek has hand-selected the pick of the crop to perform at this Carlow performance.

Joining him is banjo rhythm-queen Angelina Carberry who was raised in the vibrant Manchester Irish community and has released a number of highly regarded albums with various musicians. Corkonian fiddler Liam Flannigan from Charleville tours and records with the Cork band Northcregg. He is an exceptionally talented and subtle fiddler and Cork’s best kept secret! Mick Conneely has toured & played with many artists over the years, most notably De Danann (1991-1995), Mary Bergin, Mairtin O’Connor, Matt Molloy, Kevin Crawford, Carl Hession, Michael McGoldrick to name but a few and has recorded on numerous albums. In 2001 his first solo album ‘Selkie’ was released to critical acclaim on the Clo IarChonnachta label. He is one of the most respected fiddle players of his generation and is also considered a leading exponent of the Greek bouzouki in Irish traditional music.

Around the World on 80 QuidWritten and Performed by Aindrias De Staic

Aindrias’s self-penned comic tale of madness and mayhem features insightful storytelling interwoven with superb musical interludes as he powerfully performs excerpts from his travelogue of an epic journey, fiddling his way across continents, on just 80 quid.

Beginning at the G8 summit in Genoa, De Staic powerfully spins yarns of people and places from the Med to Indonesia, Australia to Argentina, Mexico and the USA. Encountering drink, drugs and all things debaucherous his path brings him face to face with the darker side of the open road as he is challenged to make ends meet. Relying only on his music, wit and charm he abandons a drug and drink fuelled lifestyle and is forced to experiment with everyday objects as his musical instruments, honing his unique understanding of sound and rhythm.

We picked this appropriately titled and themed piece of comic theatre / music / travel storytelling to help you wind down your 2010 festival madness!

SCHOOLS PROJECTS

36 Tionscadail Scoileanna & For-rochtana / SCHOOLS & OUTREACH PROJECTS

Éigse loves working with Carlow schools and community groups and we’re always enthusiastic about growing and expanding our programme each year to invest in our children and our community’s future. While the focus on schools and outreach projects reaches its peak during the festival, we continue to provide workshops and opportunities to schools, nursing / convalescent homes and community groups in Carlow all year round.

Poster competition sponsored by UnumWe once again set the task of finding Carlow’s budding young artist with the successful poster converted by our graphic designers into a professional event poster, distributed in the run up to Éigse as promotion for the festival.

Young Critics Forum The young Critics Forum leaves nothing uncovered during the festival. A cast of young critics have been workshopped in “round table discussions” facilitated by writer Dave Donohue and members of the Carlow Nationalist newspaper. The young critics will attend a range of events at Éigse to deconstruct and scrutinise the programme of events. The reviews will be printed in The Carlow Nationalist - our media partner, shortly after the festival. Keep an eye out to see what the young critics think of the 2010 festival!!

Visual arts schools interpretive talks and workshopsTours of the visual arts exhibitions are provided annually for a number of schools throughout the festival providing easy-to-understand talks about the artworks on display and helping school children and their teachers to develop a better understanding of the wide range of visual art on display.

IBM Lego® Robot projectVolunteers from IBM conduct workshops on location to introduce older school children to the engineering process of LEGO® robotics. The workshop involves building and programming of the robots and provides quality learning experiences for all.

OUTREACH PROJECTSA selection of artists at Éigse 2010 will perform special performances at a number of local nursing homes and day care centres throughout the county. This year Éigse is also working with members of the travelling community in Carlow via the University of Limerick’s NOMAD project, providing performance and showcasing opportunities during the festival.

Take a bow!

The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a big part of people’s lives, the country’s single most popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define who we are today, and imagine our future. We can all take pride in the enormous reputation our artists have earned around the world.

The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart investment of taxpayers’ money in the arts is repaid many times over. The dividends come in the form of a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible, educated, innovative work force, and in a cultural tourism industry worth €2.4 billion directly a year.

The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for funding and developing the arts. Arts Council funding from the taxpayer, through the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, for 2010 is €69.15 million, that’s less than €1 a week for every household.

So, at the end of your next great festival experience, don’t forget the role you played and take a bow yourself!
