The Dutch House by Ann Patchett is a tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. It’s a moving story that explores the indelible bond between two siblings, their childhood home, and a past that will not let them go. The Guardians by John Grisham is a classic legal thriller–-with a twist. It is the story of the Guardian Ministries and its founder, Cullen Post who travels the country fighting wrongful convictions and taking on clients forgotten by the system. His organization accepts only a few “innocence” cases each year and has chosen the case of a man incarcerated for twenty-two years, still maintaining his innocence—powerful, ruthless people are behind the murder, and they do not want his new client exonerated. A Single Thread by Tracy Chevalier tells the story of a “surplus” woman and does a masterful job of depicting the circumstances of a generation of women: the mothers, sisters, wives and fiancés of men lost in World War I.
The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott combines a legendary literary love story with a narrative about two women empowered to lead lives of extraordinary intrigue and risk. . The Darwin Affair by Tim Mason is an edge-of-your-seat Victorian-era thriller, where the contro-versial publication On the Origin of Species sets off a string of unspeakable crimes. This is a breath-taking historical mystery. ~ Pat Harkins
