Document Scope

This manual will acquaint you with the Temperature Controllers (REG24, REG48, and REG96), tell you how to install them, describe changes you may make in configuration, review the operation, and provide maintenance procedures.This manual is written for a Temperature Controller user and assumes familiarity with Temperature Controller networks.

The Temperature Controllers are Single loop microprocessor controlled devices performing the following enhanced functions: PID Auto-tuning Fuzzy logic Alarms Ramps

There are 3 versions of Temperature Controllers, with different sizes and characteristics.

The product references in accordance with the sizes are: REG24P••••••: 24x48 mm (0.94x1.89 in.) REG48P••••••: 48x48 mm (1.89x1.89 in.) REG96P••••••: 48x96 mm (1.89x3.78 in.)

Overview

The REG24 is a smaller Temperature Controller (24x48 mm [0.94x1.89 in.]). It can be used in standalone installation for simple machine, or more complex in association with PLC’s, HMI, and communication Modbus (RS485).

The face panel has the Process Value (PV) and Setpoint Value (SV) displays, the status indicating lamp, and the setting keys.

Introduction

Item Name Function

1 Setpoint Value (SV) lamp

Lilts while a Setpoint Value (SV) is displayed. Flickers while the Process Value (PV) is displayed in

Standby mode.

2 Process Value (PV)/Setpoint Value (SV)/Parameter Name or Parameter Setting Display

Displays a Process Value or Setpoint Value at operation mode.

Displays the parameter name or settings at parameter setting mode.

Displays the various detected error indications. Flickers at Standby mode when SV is displayed. Displays the Setpoint Value (SV) and “SV-x” (x:1 to 4)

alternately when the SV-switching function is used and SV is displayed.

3 Up key / Down key The numerical value is increased or decreased by pressing the key once.

The numerical value keeps on increasing or decreasing by pressing and holding the key.

Used for searching parameters within the 1st, the 2nd and the 3rd block.

4 Select key The key shifting to the 1st, the 2nd or the 3rd block parameter, switching the display between parameter and the data at the 1st, the 2nd and the 3rd block.

5 Alarm Output 1 and 2(AL1 and AL2)

The lamps are lit when respective alarm output is active.NOTE:

Available for the following references: REG24 PTP1ALHU. REG24 PTP1ARHU.

6 (C1) Control output indication lamp

The lamp is lit while the control output 1 is ON.

Installation Precautions

WARNINGUNINTENDED EQUIPMENT OPERATION

Do not install the controller where: Ambient temperature is outside the range of -10° C to 50° C (14° F to 122° F)

while in operation. Ambient humidity is inferior to 90% RH while in operation. Condensation can occur. Corrosive or combustible gases are present. There is vibration or shock. Exposed to water oil, chemicals, steam or vapor. Exposed to dust, salty air, or air containing high concentrations of metal

particles. Subject to electromagnetic interference from static electricity, magnetism, and

external electromagnetic interference sources. Exposed to direct sunshine. Heat is accumulated due to solar radiation.

Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage.

WARNINGUNINTENDED EQUIPMENT OPERATION

Do not allow the openings around the controller to be blocked, or the unit's heat dissipation ability will be reduced.

Do not allow the ventilation openings on top of the terminal block to be blocked.

Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage.

CAUTIONTEMPERATURE CONTROLLER DAMAGE

Use front face. Use panel mounting adapter. Do not torque screws beyond the rated values.

Follow the steps given below when installing the Controller:

Wiring

Overview

Wiring Installation Instructions

For the thermocouple sensor type, use thermocouple compensation wires for wiring.

For the RTD type, use a wiring material with a small lead wire resistance and no resistance differentials among three wires.

Keep input lines away from power line and load line to avoid the influence from electromagnetic interference induced.

For the input and output signal lines, be sure to use shielded wires and keep them properly segregated from each other.

If an electromagnetic interference level is excessive in the power supply, the additional installation of an insulating transformer and the use of an electromagnetic interference filter are recommended.

Use stranded power supply cable for the instrument. For the unit with an alarm against a burn-out in the heater, use the same power

line for connection of the power supplies for the heater and the controller. A setup time is required for the contact output when the power is turned on. If the

contact output is used as a signal for an external interlock circuit, use a delay relay at the same time.

Use the auxiliary relay since the unit's operational life is shortened if full capacity load is connected to the output relay. Use the SSR/SSC drive output type if the output operations occur frequently.

If an inductive load such as magnetic switches connected as a relay output load, use a protection module (Free wheel Diode or RC circuit or Varistor).

Use a non-grounded sensor for resistance bulb or thermocouple of the SSR/SSC-driven output, output of 4 to 20 mA DC.

DANGERHAZARD OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, EXPLOSION OR ARC FLASH

Remove all power from the controller. Always use a properly rated voltage sensing device to confirm power is off. Use only the specified voltage when operating the controller.

Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.

Overview

To configure the module you can use the Keys on the Panel (see page 14) or the software tools (see page 145).The following chapter explains what you need to know for using the panel.

NOTE: The parameters can be invisible on the panel depending of the mask parameters or not modifiable depending on the status of the KeyLoc parameter.

Operational Mode

Operation Mode

Operation mode is the regular mode of operation. PV or SV values are displayed. Control output and alarm output are suspended during standby, but the PV value is displayed as normal and the SV value blinks. The controller starts in this mode when the power is turned on.

Manual Mode

Manual mode allows you to set MV output manually. The PV value is displayed, as

in operation mode. Use the key and the key to change the MV value, displayed as a percentage from -3% to 103%. Manual display mode only appears when the controller is set to manual mode.

Overview

Standby setting (Settings: oFF/on) (see page 190):

It is located in the first block.

At ON/OFF control mode, output signal is as shown below: Set parameter “P” = 0 for selecting the ON/OFF control mode. Set the hysteresis to avoid chattering.

Description

This parameter switches the control between RUN and Standby. During standby, the control output and the alarm output stay OFF, like the

standby for ramp-soak operation. Retransmission output is kept operated. (However, if the type of retransmission output is set to the MV, it becomes 4mA or lower.)

While the alarm with a hold is selected, the hold function takes effect after changing the Standby setting from ON to OFF.

is displayed during the standby for ramp-soak operations or the controller changes to the standby state in case of the occurrence of any detected errors.

The other operations are the same as those of the ramp-soak standby. The setting of ON/OFF for standby is saved after power OFF. When the standby is set to ON during the auto-tuning, self-tuning, and ramp-soak

operations, those operations will stop. (The PID constant will not be renewed.) Even through it is set to OFF later, the auto-tuning, self-tuning, and ramp-soak operations will not be re-started.

During standby, the ON-delay timer is reset. When returning to RUN from the standby state, the timer will start from the beginning.

The SV lamp flickers only when standby state.

Auto-Tuning

Overview

Auto-tuning (AT) (see page 190).

It is located in the first block.

Auto-tuning, located in the first block, is the automatic calculation and entering of the control parameters (P,I and D) into memory. Prior to the auto-tuning, complete the setting of input range (P-SL,P-SU, P-dP), a Setpoint value (SV), alarm setting (AL1, AL2), and cycle time (TC).

Description

NOTE: If the controller is powered off during auto-tuning, this makes the auto-tuning

ineffective with each parameter of , , and unchanged. To start the auto-tuning

set to “1” or “2” again.

To suspend the auto-tuning, set to “0”. This makes the auto-tuning cancel

with each parameter of , , and unchanged.

Once the parameters of , , and are set automatically by the auto-tuning, those parameters are stored in the controller even after it is powered off. Therefore, it is not necessary to execute the auto-tuning again.

By setting to “1” or “2”, the auto-tuning operation starts, and at the end of the

tuning, will be displayed automatically to . After the auto-tuning operation, the controller starts to operate at the

automatically set values of , , and . A decimal point at the right end of the SV display flashes during auto-tuning. There are two codes for AT: Setting code [1]: SV standard type. Performs the auto-tuning based on the SV. Setting code [2]: Low PV type. Performs the auto-tuning based on the SV-

10%FS.

NOTE: Since ON/OFF control is performed during auto-tuning, overshoot against the SV may occur. To reduce the overshoot, execute the auto-tuning operation with the setting code [2] (Low PV) selected.

The auto-tuning can be executed both just after power-on and in a control or stable status.

Self-Tuning

Overview

With the self-tuning function, PID parameters are automatically re-optimized depending on the actual condition of device to be controlled and the setting temperature (SV).

Description

At power ON: changing a Setpoint value or the external disturbance, tuning is made automatically so that the PID parameters are re-optimized. It is useful where modification of PID parameters is required repeatable due to frequent change in process condition. If high controllability is important, select the PID or fuzzy control algorithm and use auto-tuning.

Self-tuning indication: . The point indicator at the lower right corner starts blinking until the PID parameters are re-optimized.

Self-tuning is executed by any of the following conditions: During temperature rise at power ON. During temperature rise at SV changing if necessary. When control is out of stable condition and is judged as being out of stable

condition continuously.

Self-tuning is not executed under the following conditions: During standby mode. During ON/OFF control. During auto-tuning. During ramp/soak operation. During input error.

When , , or is manually set.

Self-tuning is canceled under the following conditions: When SV is changed. When Self-tuning can not be completed in about 9 hours after the start.

Information Turn on the power of the whole system. The controller should be turned on at

the same time with the other equipment or even later. Otherwise, the self-tuning might not be performed successfully.

Do not change the SV while the self-tuning is executing. Once PID parameters are optimized, the self-tuning is not executed at the next

power on unless SV is changed. After the execution of self-tuning, if the controlability is not your expected level,

select PID or FUZZY at parameter, and then, start the auto-tuning.

Alarm Function

Overview

The Alarm Function is only available with the Modbus configuration (except for REG24 PTP1ALHU and REG24 PTP1ARHU).

Kinds of Alarm

The following kind of alarm are available: Absolute value alarm. Deviation alarm. Combination alarm. Zone alarm.

Description

These parameters are used for selecting the operation types of Alarms 1 and 2. Alarm1 is activated in the same way as Alarm2 except for codes 12 to 15. (Codes

12 to 15 cannot be selected for Alarm1.) When any code of 12 to 15 is selected for Alarm 2, Alarm 2 is activated and Alarm

1 is cancelled. "Alarm hysteresis", "Delay time", and "Alarm latch" can be selected in Alarm 2 settings.

The display of the parameter in which the alarm value is set varies depending on the alarm operation types.

Overview

The Ramp/soak function changes the Setpoint value (SV) as the time elapses, in accordance with a predetermined program pattern.

Description

Up to eight pairs of ramp operation can be programmed. The first ramps starts from the Process Value (PV) just before the program is

executed. It is also possible to run the program automatically.

Wiring

Overview

Wiring Installation Instructions

For the thermocouple sensor type, use thermocouple compensation wires for wiring.

For the RTD type, use a wiring material with a small lead wire resistance and no resistance differentials among three wires.

Keep input lines away from power line and load line to avoid the influence from electromagnetic interference induced.

For the input and output signal lines, be sure to use shielded wires and keep them properly segregated from each other.

If an electromagnetic interference level is excessive in the power supply, the additional installation of an insulating transformer and the use of an electromagnetic interference filter are recommended.

Use stranded power supply cable for the instrument. For the unit with an alarm against a burn-out in the heater, use the same power

line for connection of the power supplies for the heater and the controller. A setup time is required for the contact output when the power is turned on. If the

contact output is used as a signal for an external interlock circuit, use a delay relay at the same time.

Use the auxiliary relay since the unit's operational life is shortened if full capacity load is connected to the output relay. Use the SSR/SSC drive output type if the output operations occur frequently.

If an inductive load such as magnetic switches connected as a relay output load, use a protection module (Free wheel Diode or RC circuit or Varistor).

Use a non-grounded sensor for resistance bulb or thermocouple of the SSR/SSC-driven output, output of 4 to 20 mA DC.

DANGERHAZARD OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, EXPLOSION OR ARC FLASH

Remove all power from the Controller. Always use a properly rated voltage sensing device to confirm power is off. Use only the specified voltage when operating the Controller.

Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious injury.

How to Configure Using Front Panel

Overview

To configure the module you can use the keys on the panel or the software tools (see page 145). The following chapter describes what you need to know for using the panel.

NOTE: The parameters can be invisible on the panel depending on the mask parameters or not modifiable depending of the status of the KeyLoc parameter.

Basic Operations

Pressing the key or the key switches between modes. Pressing

or key in monitor mode or setup mode allows you to choose menu items.

Changing Instructions

To change the instructions you have to use the and keys.

Operational Mode

Operational Mode

Operational mode is the regular mode of operation. PV and SV values are displayed. Control output and alarm output are suspended during standby, but the PV value is displayed as normal and the SV value blinks. The controller starts in this mode when the power is turned on.

Manual Mode

Manual mode allows you to set MV output manually. The PV value is displayed, as

in operational mode. Use the key and the key to change the MV value,

displayed as a percentage from -3% to 103%. Manual display mode only appears when the controller is set to manual mode.

Acts as an ON/OFF control when the PID parameter is set to = 0.0 ( ). ON/OFF control switches the control output to ON (100%) or OFF (0%) according to the size relationship of PV and SV.The output hysteresis can be set under the

During ON/OFF control, the I and D settings do not affect control. The manual operation during ON/OFF control will become MV=100% when the up key is pressed, and MV=0% when the down key is pressed. If the hysteresis width is narrow, and PV and SV are nearly equal, the output may frequently switch ON and OFF. Note that it may affect the operation life of the relay output.

Standby Switch

The following will switch you between operation mode and standby mode.

NOTE:

When "hold alarms" is on, the hold function activates when standby settings switch from on to off.

Running Auto-Tuning

NOTE:

PID parameter which is set after auto tuning has finished normally will be maintained even when the power is turned off. However, the PID value will not be changed if the power is turned off during Auto-Tuning. In this case, rerun Auto-Tuning.

The equipment will use ON/OFF (2 position) control during Auto-Tuning, so there may be a large change in PV according to the process. Do not use auto-tuning for processes that do not permit a large change in PV. Do not use auto-tuning for processes such as pressure control and flow control that have a fast response.

Auto-tuning is not behaving normally if it has not finished after four or more hours. In these cases, recheck parameters such as input/output wiring, control output behavior (normal/reverse), and input sensor type.

Rerun auto-tuning if there is a large change in SV, a change in the PV input type, or a change in the control target conditions that reduces the effectiveness of the controls.

You can run auto-tuning when the control type is set to "fuzzy" or "PID2". You cannot run auto-tuning in manual mode. When using the PID selection function, the auto-tuning will result when the

selected PID group is stored. Auto tuning is forcibly terminated when SV changes because of the ramp soak

function, remote SV function, or ramp SV.

Step Action

1 Display the operation menu .

2 Display auto-tuning and choose the tuning type.

Choose the standard type or low PV type according to the control target.

3 Press the key to start auto-tuning.

A decimal point will blink at the bottom of the display during auto-tuning. When auto-tuning has successfully competed, blinking decimal point will turn off and overwrites the PID.

Self-Tuning

Overview

Self-tuning Control is a control which automatically calculates the value of PID, under the condition that the control target or Setpoint value (SV) changes. Self-tuning is especially effective for situations when a high level of control is not needed, but auto-tuning cannot be run due to frequent changes in the control target conditions.

When a high level of control is required, choose PID control, fuzzy PID control, or PID2 control.

Conditions Where Self-Tuning Can Be Used

Self-tuning is used in the following situations: When temperature rises when the power is turned on When temperature rises when SV changes (or when the controller decides it is

necessary) When the controller decides it is necessary because the controls have become

unstable

Conditions Where Self-Tuning Cannot Be Used

Self-tuning cannot be used in the following situations: During control standby During ON/OFF (2-position) control During auto-tuning During ramp soak progress When there is a detected error in the input When set for dual output When any of the P, I, D, Ar parameters are set to manual During manual mode During soft start progress

Creating A Ramp Soak Operation Pattern

Overview

PID controls run as long as the parameter is set to ≠ 0.0 ( ) and

PID2 Control

Overview

In case the power supply of the control target goes ON > OFF > ON, this PID2 control can suppress the amount of overshoot. This control introduces an algorithm to prevent the calculated PID result from becoming a miscalculation, even when the control loop is open.

You will need to run auto-tuning to set the PID parameter when using Pid2 control.

Soft Start

Overview

When turning on the equipment (including the temperature controller), the Soft Start function suppresses the MV to become maximum output. It places an upper limit on MV output for a specified amount of time after power is turned on.

This function is useful for effects such as suppressing the heater output during equipment startup, or lightening the load.

NOTE:

The Soft Start function cannot be used simultaneously with the valve control functions and the dual control.

During manual mode, the manual output value has priority, but Soft Start will continue to keep track of the set time period.

Normal Control

After the specified time has passed after switching on the equipment (or if = 0), the Soft Start function ends and normal controls begin:

Connection to a Computer

Overview

The Controller is equipped with Modbus slave protocol from the RS-485 interface and PC loader interface, which enables the transmission and reception of data between devices such as the personal computer, the programmable controller, and the graphic panel.

The communication system is composed of a master and slave relationship (Modbus Protocol). However, the master can only communicate with one slave at a time. Therefore, each slave is specified by the "Station No." setting. With PC loader communication, only one slave can be connected to one master.

When using an equipment such as a personal computer as master with an USB interface, make sure to use a TSXCUSB485 converter.

How to install

The following table explains the procedure for connecting the Temperature Controller to a computer:

Integration in a Network

Overview

The controller is equipped with Modbus slave protocol from the RS-485 interface and PC loader interface, which enable the transmission and reception of data between devices such as the personal computer, the programmable controller, and the graphic panel.

The communication system is composed of a master and slave relationship. Up to thirty-one slaves (micro controllers) may be connected to one master (such as a programmable logical controller) based on a "single master/multiple slave" method.

However, the master can only communicate with one slave at a time and is in charge of managing the link with each device. Therefore, each slave is specified by the "Station No." setting.

In order to have proper communication between master and slave, the transmission data must be in the same format for all the devices.

Systems constructed with the micro controller as slaves do not respond to messages issued by the master with broadcast queries where the station number is "0".

Step Action

1 Connect the TSXCUSB485 converter on the port L1 of the Modbus TAP (TWDXCAT3RJ) junction. The port L2 is used to connect the temperature controller. The port L3 is used to connect the port L1 of the second Modbus TAP junction. Use the switches of the TAP to configure the end line impedance and polarization.

2 Repeat the same operation for each device.

3 For the end line of the last device, the switches of the TAP can be used as the integrated end line of the device if it is present.

4 Plug the TWDCUSB485 converter to your computer.

Recommendation

Please use a shielded twist pair cable. The maximum cable length should be 500m. One master and up to thirty-one

micro controllers (slaves) can be connected per circuit. Terminate both ends of the circuit with a terminating resistance of 100 Ohms

(1/2W or more). Ground the shielded cable once towards the master side.

Electromagnetic Interference Filter Utilization

When using the micro controller in an area where the imposed electromagnetic interference level is expected to exceed 1000V, we recommend using an electromagnetic interference filter on the master side as seen in the figure below.

The following figure represents the wiring with the electromagnetic interference filter (recommended ZRAC2203-11, made by TDK Corporation):

For MODBUS protocol, coil numbers or resistor numbers are assigned by the function code, and each function code only works for the assigned coil number or resistor number.

Sent Data Format

The MODBUS protocol used by this equipment employs RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) mode. The data is sent as "numerical value", not as ASCII code.

Internal Calculation Value and Engineering Unit

In this unit, parameter data and data dependent on an input range can handle the two following types of data: Internal Calculation Value: Values listed as percentage of the input range (0.00

to 100.00, without decimal point). Engineering Unit: Values subjected to scaling to actual values depending on the

input range. "Engineering Unit" data is handled as the address (register number) of 1000 added to the address (resistor number) for "Internal Calculation Value".

Example: the value is calculated as follows when the full scale is 400° C and the PV value is "150".

The PV value is received as follows: 37.50 (%) x 400 (full scale ° C) = 150 ° C

Data not dependent on an input range are the same data in both addresses. Also, bit data cannot be handled in this manner. (Not effective for addresses with 1,000 added).

NOTE: Pay attention to the position of the decimal point when changing the input range by writing with communication. When changing the position of the decimal point by writing with communication, change the lower limit and upper limit of the input range at the same time.

Managing the Decimal Point

Some of the internally stored data may contain digits lower than the decimal point on the front display. Also, the decimal point is not added to sent data.

Carry out processes for the decimal point position (erasing the decimal point when sending data and adding the decimal point when receiving data).

Attention must be paid to the position of the decimal point for data where the parameters are dependent on a range in "Chapter 7 Address Map and Data Format". Refer to Address Map.

Data During Detected Input Error

For situations such as overrange, underrange, and input breaks where or

display on the front, read PV value becomes 105% or -5% of the input range.

Input errors can be detected via communication using "resistor number 30008 (or 31008): Input/Unit Error Status".
